Sammy won't move
« on: April 17, 2008, 10:44:24 AM »
I haven't been here for a while, been locked up in "CJ World", but I need to finally fix my Sammy. The problem is it won't move, forward or reverse. It will shift from gear to gear but won't move when clutch is released. No noises or grinding at all. I'm in the middle of pulling the tranny and tcase. Any thoughts on what I should look for?
Correction-here- it will move slightly with very high RPM's. I guess this tells me it is in gear?? Thanks.

do you know if your transfer case is stuck in neutral? I had that prob once ...a real pia. i had to remove the plate around the transfer stick and dig down into the transfer case to get it to shift back into 2wd

I think the brakes are fine as it rolls easily. The Tcase shifter moves freely and removal was easy enough. I am expecting the clutch to be a mess. The only thing that bothers me about the clutch is it feels as though it is working when I depress the pedal, there is a certain amount of resistance, although it shifts from gear to gear while the engine is running without any grinding, there is no movement of the vehicle (except high RPM's, in reverse). I am dreading finding the clutch in good condition and having to look towards the tranny. :'( I should have the tranny separated from the engine within a couple of days, weather permitting.

There's a quick way to split this problem in half and see if it's the t-case or the transmission/clutch. Have someone in the car with foot on brake start it and put it into first gear. Climb under the car and look at the jack shaft between the transmission and the t-case. If it's spinning, the problem is in the t-case (stuck in neutral / bad shifter sheet). If it's not spinning, the problem is the transmission/clutch.

Good luck, Eric

Yea, I actually did do just that. Jackshaft didn't budge.
