91 sidekick idle lopeing.
« on: November 09, 2006, 06:36:19 PM »
Hello I have a 91 sidekick manual 1.6L that idles high most of the time (1100-1200rpm)  and the idle "lopes" or goes high then low consistently untill the engine reaches operating temperature.  There is no signal coming from the computer and the temperarute sending unit for the temerature gauge is fine.  I have a haynes manual but it is relativly useless for this problem.  Any help would be sweet.

Pretty sure I know what's going on here. There's a cold weather air bypass valve on the throttle body that commonly goes bad on these. There's a small plate on the passenger side of the throttle body with three screws in it. Under the plate is a spring held in by a round threaded device (picture a life saver with external threads). Try plugging the hole in the middle of the "life saver" and see if it runs normal. If so you have air bypassing when it doesn't need to. I welded my "lifesaver" so the hole was plugged and have never had problems since.

On the early models there is a wax pellet controlling the idle in the throttle body and as it opens the choke, the cold air passing over it closes it again, causing the idle to bounce high and low until the engine is fully warm. I think there is a fix for it, but I never bothered to do it to mine, it didn't bother me.
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...
