Want a high output alternator - HELP!!!
« on: January 09, 2008, 12:36:51 AM »
Hello everyone,

Does anyone know if it's possible to convert to a GM style alternator on the 2002 2.0 litre 4 cylinder Vitara?  I want a 200amp alternator but no one seems to make one for my model.

Thanks,

Chad

i did this with my 90.  put in a GM 12si after changing the pulley, bought the bottom bracket and fabbed the top adjuster arm.  but, its only 94 amp, compared to the old stock 45.  i had the amp rebuild and was told that extra windings could be added for more amps, but they said it was a sort of bad idea and would shorten the life of the alt.  i really think it would fit in a new version Vit, dont know the amp on your stock one...  i have heard of people putting in more than one alt.....  good luck.

oh, and look here for some info too.  maybe call this guy and see if he has any input.  bought from him and talked to him, very nice guy.

Only issue that I know Tim has with this alt. is the pulley is no the type.  So if you do contact them find out if you can get the pulley matched to the GV.

Has he had any issues because the pulley isn't an exact match?  I don't know a lot about it, but it seems like that might be a potential problem.  Does it cause the belt to slip/come off?

Any down sides to installing a more powerful alternator?  Like do you have to make any other electrical mods to the engine system to carry the additional output from these more powerful alternators... or are the factory wiring and fuzes not affected by this type upgrade?

I guess no one makes an all in one conversion kit eh?  (Pardon the eh, I'm Canadian eh?)

Which type of GM alternator is best suited for this conversion?

The ACE alt required me to splice into the harness, as the connectors aren't the same.  I haven't swapped over pulleys yet, as it needs the GV pulley.  It came with a 6 goove pulley and a smaller diameter.  I've shredded 3 or 4 Suzuki belts, and thats not cheap.

But hey, I got a 185 amp alt! ;D
