Hmmm.  308,000 kilometers....  about 185,000 miles.... not bad!  I'm curious, did you put all these miles on this engine or just the last few thousand miles?   Mine currently has 85,000 miles on it now.  I've only put about 5K of these on it and I have no reason to believe the engine was REALLY well maintained with regular oil and filter changes.  I'd be tickled if I could get another 100K out of it, but I'm thinking I'll start considering a rebuild or swap-out at about 150K just for the reliability factor and the little bit of peace of mind a new engine can give (even though it is a bit of false security)!   I think the standard planning life for wheel bearings and axle gears must be right around 250K before normal failure.  I had to replace my rear axle bearings on my '91 right around 197K miles.  But hey, if you like the truck, it's a good investment.

Hey Norm,
I bought the rig new off the lot so all the mileage is mine(75%of it was highway).
Regular service at 5000kms, drop tranny and diff fluids twice a year and plugs every 6 months and that about all the motor has had done to it so I guess I can't complain. As for wheel bearings, the stockers last until about 240,000km but since the lift I've done them twice. A good tip, buy the quality ones from NAPA as they have a life time warranty if you hang on to the receipt. Free replacement bearings at that price are a bonus, just a real pain to swap out.
I was tempted to buy a used motor with low miles on ebay as rebuilding these motors is not cheap if you need to change out those funky-ass lifter/rocker deals.

I'm thinking 3.8 or 4.3 with a 700R4 , a little more uumph to turn the toy axles and 37's!  ;)

I forgot to mention, everything was fine until I dropped in a can of "Restore" on the last oil change.
3000km later the things banging away like a diesel.
I believe the engine treatment is part of the problem.

Yanked the motor today, pulled the valve cover and found the timing chain adjuster snapped off and jammed into the cam gears. There is quite a bit of shrapnel in the top end, I'm pulling the pan tomorrow to pull a few main and rod caps to see if the journals are toastifed or not.
I've got a line on a roll-over 2006 xl7, maybe a swap is in order.

I was CONSIDERING using an aftermarket additive (I think it is made by Lucas oil) you pour in just prior to the oil change and it's supposed to flush the crap out.  I was a little skeptical.  Now I'm even more skeptical.  My uncle used to pour in some kerosine into the oil of his big 300 straight six every once in awhile prior to oil changes.  Seemed to run forever but I think the tolerances are quite a bit tighter now.  So maybe changing the timing chains at about 125K may be a good investment.

Sorry you lost your engine, but good luck on your adventure of slipping more HP into it.  You'll still have a ball!
