OK , Gearing question for my Sami
« on: October 02, 2007, 07:04:26 PM »
I'm sure this has been asked several time . But i will ask again. I have 87 w/ stock axles  on 33's, axle truss's. 6.4 :1 t-case gears. i dont want to put in trac/kick 3rd members(or should i ?). i plan on upgrading the axle shafts with the calmini shafts. and putting lockers front and rear(lock right)  so what do you think on gears  4.57 or 5.38  it will be driven on rd. Thanks in Avance.....

I'm surprised you have to put lower gears in at all with the 6.4:1.  The 4.57 would probably be enough if you want to go a bit slower in high range.  There is a post a few lines down that discusses how to fine tune your gears.  There is also a gear calculator here.

For the front end, I would go with full Chromoly shafts and birfields instead of just the heavy duty front shafts.  Better warranty and stronger birfields.  Don't forget if you upgrade your front shafts you will need to get rear side gears for your front locker as they have a larger spline.
