Ok, you got me... I bit! Photo added, Little mule is home
« on: August 30, 2007, 05:37:39 AM »
Hello everyone! I have been driving by a 1994 Sidekick JX that is for sale for the past couple of days. I have always like the looks of the Sami, so I thought I would see what was up online in the way of resources for the SK. After lurking here for a few hours, I had to jump on the band wagon! I'm picking up the 1994 tonight, it has 181k some dents, the softtop is crap, wheels and tires are whipped, and windshield is cracked. It starts and runs good, tranny, hi/lo and clutch seem good and it has clean paperwork. I bought it for $400.00 cash! Picking it up tonight, let the fun begin. I'm considering a VW diesel tranplant has anyone swapped one yet?

Here she is, not bad for 400.00. Runs smooth and drives good, 4wd system, trans and clutch work great
Sorry, fixed photo...

I swapped in a VW 1.9 TD, install is very easy using Acme's kit.
2000 Grand Vitara Limited, 2" lift, 225/75-16 BFG KO's, 5.12 gears, Safari snorkel, roof rack.
1987 Samurai LWB, VW 1.9 Turbo Diesel.

Jeff, what was total cost for hardware? How is the performance compared with stock?

Total cost will depend on how much you pay for a motor. I went the expensive route and bought a new crate motor. The conversion kit prices are on Acme's website. The power of this motor doesn't even compare to the stock Sammy motor. It has more power than the 16 valve tracker motor that I had.

From the first post I would say he bought a sidekick, not a sami. The swap for motors is different.

I've seen those rims before, they don't' have any real problems that I know of.

You should keep it low to the ground, get some wide tires and run dunes!   ;D

Thanks for the welcomes and comments. Yeah the 2-spoke wheels are funky. I'm planning on a lift and different wheels and rims basically a complete rebuild. So far the stock motor runs pretty good. I still plan on doing a vw diesel swap. This will be my first major off-road (4-wheeled vehicle) build. I usually hate working on cars, I'm a big Japanese motorcycle fan and I restore vintage dirtbikes (mostly motocrossers) so I'm hoping this Suzuki will be more fun to work on than my Dodge Dakota has been. I also recently bought a cool 1972 VW microbus that had been stored in a barn for 30 years. I'm not a big bus person but this one is completely rust free and in great shape with only 35,000 original miles and it's built like a tank. I'mlooking forward to reading as many threads as possible in hopes of learn as much as possible while I work on the Sidekick.
I'll post photos as I go!
Best wishes,
KDX
