Well Flyin Hawaiian AKA Tai Weaver did a 4+ trail with 31's sprung over, and every one else had 33's or bigger, and he was the only one that didn't have to get jacked, or wenched...I'm going with 31's when mine's lifted  :)

Unless your planning an engine swap I would stick to a 31" tire.  With 33" tires you will probably run out of steam on the highway for long trips.

31 is perfect for a 4.9 t-case.

Personal opinion 31's will get you just about anywhere you want to go. but after running 32's and 31's I want 33's or 34's for the air down cushiness. Drone you know you woulndn't go back down to 31's after riding on your 33's air'd down now would you.

It also depends on how much lift and trimming you want to do to your rig. sky's spoa and 31's or 32's fit great 33's or bigger you'll need more lift or more trimming
.
I would also recommend dropping down your axle gearing as well. I'm running 4.62's and can do 65 on the freeway just fine with 31's. add a 4 to 1 or 5 to 1 transfercase gearing and 33's will do the same.
Remember if your engine can't cut it then go lower in your gearing.
I'm still running the tired old 1.3 that came in my 88 with only an oil change and no tune up for the last 3 years. Damn thing just won't die.

First and foremost though I would just get your rig and wheel it stock. One you get to learn your rig and where it really needs to be improved on and it's amazing what these things will do stock.

Good lord no.  :P

But I only run from trail to trail.  With my little 970cc power plant (45hp, 43lbs torque stock) I can only hit about 45 on a flat road, and some logging roads I can't really go over 2nd gear if my tires are aired down.  I just don't have the power.  If i was building a daily driver/touring rig and was keeping the 1.3L I would probably stay with the 31" tires and spend the extra money on a good winch and a pair of lockers front and rear.

I wonder how some thin 33's would do...

I agree with the 31's on a spoa, for a DD and stock gearing,  mine has 33" boggers and a 6 to1 t-case and tops out |removethispart|@ 55 and mpg are around 14 to 18.   : :(  Heavy tires take alot of power, so be realistic on how much wheelin you will do and choose your tire from there!!  A stock sami with some lockers can out wheel alot of built rigs! 8)
