Quick locker question?
« on: July 11, 2007, 02:48:54 PM »
On my 92 turbo tracker I have a gearless lcoker in the back and I'm thinking of going to a mini-spool.   1) has any one run one on the street, and did you break axels or cross pins? 2) can I put my rear locker in the front if I change to newer 26 spline axels?,  or should I just get over it and spend $300 for the front locker? either way I will be replacing the front axels. Oh and if it matters I'm running 30x11.50x15's
thanks for the help!!!

I think trail tough figured out how to put one in the front, but i'm not sure if it's actually the rear lockright that they're using up front.

Call them and ask what the deal is.

Spools won't have cross pins. There just a large circular steel spline coupler. Your worst worry is gonna be TWISTING shafts which will feel like the wheels are out of balance. Snapping on the street would be a little rare unless you got a V8 up front. With your Turbo the lag should be sufficient to prevent any drive train jolt and should bring the power on fairly smooth. Just be sure your blow off valve is working properly for the gear changes.

The front housing, check to see if it's an aluminum model before you throw money into it. If it is search for a steel model, bench build that one, then swap it in. That way you can piece it together using your rear locker, or sell the rear locker to offset the $300 for the new front. Also BEEF up that pinion mount up there!

Mini-spools do have cross pins un like a full spool they just replace the spider gears and the side gears, I've run them in ford nine inch circle track racing, and I did break cross pins. but thanks for the good advice. I called trailtough to day and talked with them for about an hour and I think I'm going to go SAS, if I can find the axels, on the other hand just a question but has any one ever thought of swaping in full toyota ifs, and rear toyota solid?

I know where there is a rolled 4runner I could get for like $100

hit me up and let me know what'cha think

I think that would be a strong set up for a tracker, My Neighbor has an 86 or newer toy with 33's on it and a v-6  5-speed and beats it and it seems to hold up well.

I friend just gave me an 86 yota frame with ifs and rear axel and all the steering linkage, and next weakend i'm going to clean out the garage and park them side by side and do some messuring tho I kinda feel sum sort of trader for even thinking 6 lug!

but here's what I got in mind toy ifs mounted 1.5" further forward 5.71 gears and a lock right
and putting toy axel stock location w/ 5.71's, and a spool, then lifting till I clear 35's with fender trimming, then for xmas I buy my self lo gear tcase set.

the bad part is I never broken any thing on my tracker so it's hard to explain to my wife that this is absolutely nessisary!

You may be able to swap the Toy ifs center section and axles in the front and use the kick spindles, A-arms etc.  It is all steel and has more gear options.  The Toy ifs is around 1/4" narrower (very rough measurement) than the Zuki ifs.  You would have to fab up mounts to hold it in place.  Stan's kit may be used to run Toy lockouts and spacers with the Zuki spindles.  The Toy ifs is torsion bar so it would be a b*tch to install.  Swapping the front Toy frame section and switching it to coils or coilovers would be super trick.  Good luck with the project either way you go!! ;D
