axle gearing
« on: December 29, 2006, 11:23:06 PM »
i have an 89 sidekick 1.6 8 valve with an auto tranny, 4.62 gears, and 31" tires. i found some 5.62's from an 89 1.3 sidekick, but would that be too low of a gear for my 31's? would 5.12's be better? i daily drive my sidekick, and spend about an hour a day on the interstate. thanks!

yes that would be to low, sell them to me  ;)  j/k

i personaly think for highway driving you would be better off with the 5.12's.  With the 5.62 you would have no top speed, and would be reving over 5k rpm just to keep up with traffic. but, you could always go up to 33" tires  ;D

I agree.  I run 5.12s, auto & 31s and turn about 4K RPM at 60MPH.  Would be even higher for the 5.62s.  But good with 33" I've heard before.  I'll trade ya my 5.12s, with or without rear locker & some $ for them! ;)

I manage to get about 67mph ( according to one of those "your speed is" highway signs,  at 3700 rpm. Thats with 31" AT's and auto with 5.13 gears. I guess the 16v is a bit better power wise though.  I'd drop in the 5.62's and be happy you found some! If not, I"LL BUY EM!

geesh, you guys are like a bunch of lions fighting over a wounded gazelle ::) >:D

ROTFLMAO

kirknd4spd....... personaly, if you are daily driving it and it is an auto you dont want to over gear it. i would pick up the 5.62 gears if they are a good deal. they can obviously make you friends or money around here, but i would give 5.12's a try first. if it isnt low geared enough then try the 5.62's. it only costs you some gear oil and a day of your time ;) and i wouldnt sell the 5.62's, you just might want to go bigger later (the evil seed >:D) and you WILL need them then
oh, and sorry to the pack of wild dogs waiting for you to show weakness :P :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D
