235/85/16s
« on: August 29, 2006, 10:37:28 PM »
I've had 245/75/16s on my 02 4door, just wondering if anybody has fit 235/85/16s?

Thanks,

Jeff

I know a some one running 265/75/16's on a GV but he did a far amount of cut along with his 3 body lift and 3 sup. lift.  I think he was from England if I can find his gv again I will post a link to it.

I've got 265-75-16's, even with 3" suspension and 3" body I have some serious hacking to do!

I compared sizes for you on a size converter.

tire size             dia         section width      section height

245-75-16       30.5"         9.6"                    7.2"

235-85-16       31.7"         9.3"                    7.9"

265-75-16       31.6"        10.4"                   7.8"

I am into a hole pile of cutting, welding and body mods to get the clearence I need, wish I would have gone with the 245-75 or a 31 x 10.5 x 15 and saved a ton of work.

Is the cutting, bending, banging, etc ... you need to do to fit the 265's because of the height, or the width?

With my 75 to 80-percent worn Goodyear MTR's (the 245s), it seems like there would be room in the wheel well for the diameter of the 235s, it would be tight, but with the 245's I've had no rubbing - actually less rubbing with them on GV steel wheels than I had with 235/70/16s on stock Vitara wheels (1/2-inch less width).

This has made me wonder about the 235/85/16s. That extra little bit of height would be sweet (any little bit makes a big difference off-road on these vehicles I'm finding.)

I know the best thing is to test fit, and when it actually comes down to buying I will first try the 235s, but wanted to ask since I'd never seen that size mentioned.

Thanks,

Jeff

Now I see why you PMed me Jeff  ;)

My rig with the 235/85 x 16 is a "Widebody" gen 1. But interestingly I only run an "enhanced" 3" Calmini kit and ZERO body lift.
I have been looking really hard at my GV and I beleive I can get 235's under it without a body lift or cutting the rear of the front guards.

Part of the formula is the rim off set, but GV's do not have steering stops to adjust  ??? Do not fear though, I will work it all out.

Years ago I fitted 31's under a 2" lifted SJ 413 without rubbing - once again wheel off set was the key. And they said it couldn't be done LOL  ;D

Think out side the square and you will acheive your goal Jeff. My advice, read a few of these threads and sit down and create something that has not been done yet.
Hint: Read up on and understand suspension geometry fully ( especially the McPherson Strut set up that our GV's run up front ). If you get a handle on ALL the variables then you will have the potential to create a masterpiece. Do not get hung up on the Castor setting though, if you run more than stock all that will happen is your rig will have a much bigger tendancy to track straight at speed. It is unlikely you will notice any difference at slow speeds. Camber - not actually that critical, but aim for around 0* or slightly negative. Toe setting - aim for 2-6mm toe in. I usually aim for the maximum factory setting with larger than stock tyres.

Of interest - My "Widebody" runs more Castor stock than a 1600 Kick. 1600 - 1*30' , 2000 V6 - 2*00'  ( I mention this because I am trying to drop you a hint - read between the lines  ;) )

Ummmmmmmmmmm - I have said enough  ;)

Good luck and let us all know how you get on  ;D

2.0 V6 auto, Calmini 3" kit, 33" jandles, LT struts, blah blah

Hey ZeusZuki, can't say I quite understand between the lines ... but, here is a pic of my rig with 245s. I have 2 inches in front, 1.5 in back. The difference in tires is 1.2, so .6 inches on either side. I think I could squeeze the 235s in, what do you think.

Also, PM me about the Calmini question if you can. I'm still confused. Im running GV rims on the regular Vitara, so rubbing is only minor at full lock with these tires.

Thanks,

Jeff

well, test fitted the 235/85/16 today. Fits fine if I only drive straight. ;D

I'll need to trim a touch, or buy the Calmini kit. Trimming would certainly be cheaper.

When turned, the tire was just catching a bit if the wheel well and liner. You can see in the picture where it was hitting by the dirt on the tire. But that size looks really good on this truck. The second pic is my approximation of where to cut ...
