IFS disassembly

hi,

just got a combindation light bar/skid plate for my 1991 Tracker 2-door.  it mounts to the bolts in the 'control arms'(?) in the front.  i got the nuts off the back of them, but can't budge the bolts themselves.  any tricks to getting them out without destroying the bushings?  do i need to get the wieght off them?  do i need support jacks under each one?  never tried this before.  thanks.

Check through the article archive for Lift Kit install articles. You will find instructions on how to safely remove your control arms. You will probably need some penetrating lube and and an impact wratchet to get the A-Arm bolts off.

thanks!!  will do the searches for sure.  i've already hosed it good.  hoping the daily driving will vibreate it enough to get it well penetrated with the lube.  i'll try again saturday and see what happens.  are replacement bushings easy to obtain?

The bushings have a steel core that the
bolt goes thru, and the edges are serrated
so they bite into the A-arm mount point, you
won't hurt them by pounding the bolt out, I
can't say the same thing for the bolt, be careful
to not damage the threads or it will be tough to
get the nut to start again.

Take the weight off by jacking up on the frame
until the wheel comes off the ground slightly, you
should be able to turn the bolt with a socket or
wrench, if not, get an impact on there and break it
loose, you might have some corrosion binding it
all together.

AFAIK Suzuki don't sell them seperately, you have to buy a complete arm :o

Yeah, we had a heck of a time getting those out.  Went to put a truss on with steering stabilizer and it took a lot to get them out.  We ended up using pullall (i think that is what is called) or hydrolic pump to put a couple thousand pounds of pressure on them and even with that we had to inche them out.

i tried the impact wrench on the bolt heads and they didn't budge.  my compressor is relatively small though.  if the guy at NAPA is right, replacement bushing assemblies are $25.00 each.  will get it on a lift on Saturday (after hosing those parts several times each day 'til then with penetrating oil) and see if i can't get them out.  really didn't find anything specific on this problem when searching this site.
