If you are new to this, it probably means you don't have a way to measure backlash.  Don't do it yourself until you can measure your backlash.

I have just done my ARB install and i had to replace the bearings on all parts , I havent gone into detail on the pinion bearings but there are some  pictures here http://www.markyb.co.uk

I am no expert and would recomend getting some one to do it for you , I will in the future as i had a couple of days scrating my head until I borrowed the correct tool from a garage and set my preload correctly.

actually u can take the third member to a tranny shop and they can measure ur backlash for u and abjust it if need be. it shouldn't be more than $20 or so just be nice and they might hook u up.

Back lash is measured with a dial indicator and you'll need a means to hold it,like a magnetic base. There's some other concerns when setting up gears. You need to adjust preload on the pinion and carrier bearing. A sensitive torque wrench with a range of about 30 inch/ponds or a spring tension scale is used to measure the preload. Also pinion height must be checked/adjusted. Marking compound is placed on the gear teeth and after a few rotations the pattern is read.
This will tell you if the pinion height is correct.
As you can see there quite a bit to properly setting-up a third member. If you're serious about doing it yourself I suggest you get the Suzuki FSM. It's the best source of info for this job.
I never asked for nothing and thats all I got.
