5.13's or 4.62's
« on: January 31, 2005, 03:26:24 PM »
My first question is:  If I were to install 5.13's or 4.62's in my 88 1/2 sammy, what else do I need besides gears in order to do this?  (ie. hybrid housings, etc.)  or will they fit right in with my stock sammy stuff.  Second question is:  I am running 33's with about 80% of my driving on road.  I was thinking of running Calminis 5.14's or 6.5's.  What is the better choice and with what ring and pinions?  Thank you for your input.  I am new to the zook thing, but I am loving it!

I have 5.12s in mine, with 31s....a little too low.
Your 33s would be perfect with the 5.12s though!
Some of the aftermarket vendors make a spacer, and can kit to put the Track/Kick front gears in the sammy axles.
I did mine without it though...there are redneck fab ways around it.

First off, go and look at your drain plug on your transmission and let me know what it looks like.

Is this a way to tell if you have the .795 or .865 5th gear ?

At a guess early .795  would have a external type nut and .865 would be the 3/8 drive captive type bung ??
Am I right ??  :-/

why do u need to reduce ur running gears if u go to a 6.5:1 t-case gears on calminis web site it clearly tells u that it will reduce the high rang running gear perfect for 32 to 33" tires. it says a true 20.2% high range reduction.

Ã‚   By changing your ring and pinions your really getting your truck back to stock then you use t-case gears to improve your wheeling ;D

it also has something to do with stress on your driveline and how it distributes it

R&P means ring and pinion

if u reduce ur t-case gear to 6.5 it is a 20.2% 2 hi reduction. this means

ring gear size X 20.2% = total + R&P size = running gear size/reduced R&P.

most t-cases don't reduce 2 hi and 4 hi but a sammi case does. say if u have a

3.73 X 20.2% =2.8104058 + 3.73 = 6.5404058.

the biggest R&P offered for a tracker is 5.89. with the 20.2% reduction in 2 hi opperation it is like running a 6.54 R&P

Unlike what's currently available in low range gear kits for the Samurai, you won't find any junky welded gears in this kit or the need to heavily alter the factory transfer case.   Our kit contains 4 completely new gears machined from billet material! Manufactured in the USA to exceed factory tolerances from quality SAE 8620 alloy. Now, you can re-gear your Samurai drive train completely through the transfer case. A TRUE 20.2% Hi-Range reduction will correct highway gearing for 32 -33" tall tires. A whopping 187% reduction in low range offers a range that is over twice as low as our current 4.16:1 kit - It’s almost too low for some instances. Either way, this is the lowest ratio gear reduction kit for your Samurai. We don't leave anything out - It's a complete kit sold with Input Shaft, High Output Gear, Low Output Gear, Counter Gear, Counter Shaft & bearings, thrust washers, gaskets and detailed instruction booklet. Installs like factory parts - NO GRINDING or CUTTING is required to install! It even comes with oil! The mandatory first step towards building an awesome off road Samurai

The plug in my tranny has a 3/8's square drive hole to remove it.
