Biggest tire for stock hight?
« on: April 08, 2006, 08:05:12 PM »
Just got a '01 ZR2 Tracker 4dr.  What's the biggest tire that will fit?  I had 235s on my stock 97 2dr Tracker and they worked OK, just a little frame rubbing when turned all the way left.  Would that size work on my stock 01 too?

Thanks in advance!
Alan

Snafu, I'm running a 235/75/15 on my 2001 4dr Tracker with no real problems. The only rubbing is like you said when turned all the way to the left. I've never had any rubbing when the suspension is fully compressed or anything.

I've got 225/75R16's (29x9R16) on our GV.  They're High-Tec Retreading's Mud pattern.  They're FAMOUS for running tall due to the retreading process.  They measured 29" tall unmounted and now with the weight of the vehicle on them they compressed a whopping...slightly less than half an inch. :P  They are TIGHT in the rear and have less than half an inch between the tire and the back of the wheel well/bumper fascia.  In the front they rub on the back of the wheel well plastic while turning.  If I hit a speed bump or pothole too fast and the suspension compresses it will make an interesting noise and worry me.  WRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
A 2" lift is sitting in my living room waiting for me to finish this semester of college. :P

That said I've heard of 235/75R15's fitting 99-04 Trackers fine.  Seems like these High-Tecs are just a bit taller than most new 29-30" tires.

I have 225/70/16 All Terrain K/O's.  They rub.  I would get 215/70/16 next time.

Otherwise, I would HIGHLY recommend these tires.  They have snow tire rating!

I'm running 235/70/16 Dayton Timberline's.  I trimmed a lot of plastic from the front lower fascia, but otherwise I don't rub.

i had some kumho 30x9.5's on my zr2, only rubbed on frame at full turn but were very close at full stuff, maybe 1/2 inch of space left in the close spots, anyway, these were small worn 30's, 235/57/15 size'ish realistically.  you should have no problems with this size.  don't buy smaller cause you'll be dissapointed..
03-ZR2, 2dr, 31x10.5 SSR's & stuff...--sold :-(

Being at stock height, I am more upset that they are rubbing than I am that I didn't buy a larger diameter.  I think people should think twice before putting too large on a stock height vehicle, especially if they don't plan on spending the bucks for a proper lift kit.  How aggressively can you off-road without a lift kit, anyways?

I mostly wanted a more aggressive tire for snow and gravel, thats why I upsized to the BFG's.  The factory size is only good for passenger car or minivan tires, which is very disappointing.

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for all the replies.  235/75/15 it will be.  Its got 215s on it now which is the stock tire size for a ZR2, and they are new.  I hate to let them go for nothing so I might get some mileage out of them first.

BTW I really like the look of these new Tracker wheels (are they different on ZR2s?) My new tracker looks just like this one:
