which is better: 15 or 16 inch wheels for tracker?
« on: April 10, 2006, 06:59:32 PM »
hi,

have a 1991 tracker getting a 2" lift soon.  i have a set of 15" aluminum turbines (old but nice shape) and a set of 16" spokes (just a couple of years old).

they are both the 5 on 5 1/2 from an old jeep and scout.  each set has the standard backspacing for the stock axles on those old 4x4's, dana 25 and 27.

what i'm wondering is which wheels i should keep that will give me the widest selection of tires for future use.

anyone have any opinions/experience with these on a trackick?

thanks.

forgot to say the aluminum wheels are 8" wide, the 16" spokes are 7" wide.

There are pros to either one, it depends what size of tires you want to run. I have found that where I live and with the conditions we have here that a tall skinny tire works best so I run  9/34-16 Swampers and they work awesome with the weight of the vehicle. If you were on dry rocks mostly then wider tires would better suit your needs. My rims are 16 x 7 steel spokes with 3.5" backspace

How about some old school 7.50x16's (about 32"). I've now gone that way.  ;D

hi,  thanks for the replys.

my lift will only be 2" so 33's and 34's are pretty much out of the question.

i was thinking about 235/75 or 30/9.50  X 15.  the other being 245/70 or 255/70 x 16.

all of those come close to being 30" but just not sure which will cause the least amount of clearance problems.  the 15" sizes will be narrower for sure.  right now most of my driving is highway.  this is my retirement 4x4 so in a couple of years after the mods are all done and the body work completed, it will spend the winters in the high desert of Nevada and the summers here in Minnesota.  NV. has the rocks/sand and MN. has the woods trails.

which ever set i go with, the other will be posted here for sale along with the small chrome wheels i bought it with.

Why not use both sets?  I have BFG MT's mounted on one set and sand tires mounted on the other set.  That allows quick change for whatever I will be running on.

All of those sizes are larger than the maximum reccomended for the rim width. The narrower you go the easier for clearance on full lock. The suggestion of two sets isn't a bad one as you can then have the ideal for the desert and also another set for the woods. With a 2" lift you should be fine if you doing 30" or smaller. I'm only running 3" suspension with those narrow 32"'s.
