Personally, for rock crawling, I don't see any problem with the 1.6/16 - It's gotten me all over the place.  I'm running a 90:1 overall gearing ratio, and that's got a lot to do with it.

That's:

1st gear - 3.652:1
Low Range - 4.24:1
Diffs - 5.83:1

Multiply them together to get your total gear ratio - just over 90:1.

I saw that, and don't think the TDi would give me any better power OR gas mileage.

ive wanted a tdi vw in a tracker or samurai for ever ,i would be really suprised if the tdi didnt have a lot more hp and tourk not to mention the fact that a diesel only needs air and feul to run under watter, and i think it would get a lot better milage. a vw gets about 45 mpg and ive seen chiped vws that will kick ass stoplite to stoplite i used to be a vw guy got vw trends for years
