Title: engine and gearbox swaps
Post by: locost_bryan on March 21, 2005, 10:44:07 AM
Hi there!

I am interested in using a Suzuki 1300 (or larger) motor and gearbox in a rwd sports car - an all-alloy engine in a light car should really fly!  :D

What I am trying to find out is if there are any differences in the 5-speed gearboxes, and which engines fit.

This is what I understand so far (please correct me where I am wrong!) :-

Suzuki have two 5-speeds :-
smaller one for up to 1300cc - SJ413 thru current Jimny
larger one for over 1600cc - Vitara 1600, 2000, V6(?)

3 different 1300cc engines used over the years :-
G13A (1324cc)
G13BB (1298cc)
M13A (1328cc) - (with vvt in current Jimny)

other options :-
G13B (1298cc) 8 valve or 16 valve (Swift GT)

G16A will bolt to Samurai trans with adaptor

Can anyone answer these questions :-

1) how much power/torque can the Samurai trans handle?
2) does the M13A have the same bolt pattern and clutch as the G13BB?
3) do the M15A/M18A engines have the same bolt pattern as the M13A?
4) what are the transmission changes mentioned for the 2005 Jimny?

Anyone know the dimensions and weights of the various engines and/or gearboxes?  G13A/B/BB are the same size, G16A a little taller?  Vitara gearbox quite abit bigger than Samurai's?

Many thanks,
Bryan.

if you want some thing sporty than look else where for the trans.  Sammy trans are very bad with shifting.  I know some one told me that Brent at Trail Tough could upgrade the auto though.  mabey its somthing you might want to think about.

also gearing in the transmissions listed is different from each other.  i think the sammy trans has lower gears in the trans.

Thanks for the feedback, Stu.

Do you mean the manual trans is difficult/notchy/slow/baulky to change gears?

According to Suzuki, the current 5-speeds (for the Jimny and 4-cylinder Vitara) are nearly identical in their ratios
(although the transfer case gears and diff ratios are worlds apart, but not relevant for me :) )

Jimny 3.652/1.947/1.423/1.000/0.864
Vitara 3.652/1.920/1.379/1.000/0.795

a little wider spaced than ideal for a sports car, but not too bad.

Just a fine point, but there are two flavors of samurai tranmission.

1st 3.652
2nd 1.947
3rd 1.423
4th 1.000
5th 0.865 post ’89
5th 0.795 pre ’90
