hey everyone, im new here and to the zuk world. i have a couple of simple questions. i have a 1989 sidekick with a 1.6 carbed engine and a 5 speed. at 65 m.p.h its going about 4300 r.p.m. is this normal? seems kinda high to me. would it be o.k. to drive to work at this r.p.m. everyday (30 miles each way), or will this wear out the engine really quick. i have more questions but i will ask later. thanks everyone

if that is were the factory set it then it has been driven at that rpm for as many years as it has been alive. mine is a 94 16 valve fuel injected it runs at 4300 at 80 mph.

Welcome Oops!
You could put a little taller tire on to drop your RPM's a little. ;)
These engines are made to rev high so it shouldn't be a problem. :D

Just turn 120K miles. Gotta find the switch and shut the Check engine light off again(already replaced T-belt) ;D
NeverMind, You have a carbed 8valved.

The switch is behind the left speaker. Take off the panel that covers the speaker, then take out the speaker, and then if you are looking at the open hole it is just inside to the right ya can't miss it. Flip it the opposite way and you are goood ta go.

4300 rpm is about where my 90 Tracker would run at 65 MPH with the stock tires... Seems normal to me.
-
Yeah, that's right about where mine runs with the 215/75R15's, too :)
-
you guys are great, thanx again for the quick replies and for the pictures from hotrod ;D

And yes, you can run it ALL DAY LONG at 4300 RPM, and it'll still last for a quarter million miles, if you take good care of it.

That's way too much work! On a 95, hust pop the trim panel under the steering column (no screws), and reach in, and to the left - you'll find the switch (I know I can in the dark, even).

FYI, here's where it is in my 91 trac ...

DO you know where the reset switch is on the 96's

96 is probably an OBD II. You have to use an external scantool to reset it.

Yup - 96 what a year for changes! "Curved" dash instrument cluster, air bags, and OBDII ECM. Sure enough, you need a scan tool to turn it off. They run about $120 at Checker's Auto Parts...

My 98 2dr 4 speed auto runs 3000 rpm at exactly 55mph in overdrive. I have 235X75X15 wheels also. Should note that the bigger the tires the faster you may be really going cuz the speedo may be reading lower that the real speed. When I had OEM 205 size tires I was going about 3 mph slower than speedo read, with the 235s I am going about 2 miles an hour faster than speedo reads (checked by radar).
Thats about a 10% speed improvement for same rpms!
That also has an effect on gas mileage. With bigger tires you are going farther than the speedo reads so you are getting better gas mileage than indicated.

Hotrod you need gas in the 2 door. Just thought I would let ya know.

I have acheived Tracker Nirvana; Thaks to Snofalls excellent picture, I was finally able to kill the infamous check engine light before I ended up spending any $$$ on an O2 sensor. All I got back was the 1-2 code. Snofalls, a gigantic THANK YOU for the pic; I had poked in so many holes I was beginning to feel like a proctologist!!  ;D

Is there an easy way to disable the airbags without them going off?
