and I was wondering if it is because it just hit 160k miles? The light came on exactly when the odometer turned, so I guess its time to do a 160k service, right?
BTW, its a 94 jx 16 valve.
-
I think it kicks on at every 50K miles
I just ignor mine, it goes out .... eventually LOL ;)
-
time to pull the speaker?
-
Yup, it's because it hit 160,000 miles. It's usually a regularly scheduled maintenance light. Take a look in your owner's manual to find out what it is... I believe it's the 02 sensor, my book says to replace it every 80,000 miles. (I'm at almost 100k and I haven't replaced mine yet, I'll just run it till I buy a new one, or it starts giving me any trouble.) Do the maintenance if you want, or, if you are lazy, and you can do it yourself whenever you get time, or at least remember that it needs to be done sometime in the future....
Then flip the switch to turn the light off. On pre 96 Track/Kicks the switch to turn the light off is behind the left dash speaker on the right side of the opening. Take the speaker out, look around the right side for a little black switch, and flip it the opposite direction. If you have small hands (like me) you can reach up under your dash in that general area and feel for a switch, and flip it that way.
Hope this helps!
;D

do you flip it and leave it on the other side or turn the engine on and just bump it?

You just flip it to the *off* position. This means, take the switch, and flip it to the opposite position. It will flip back to the *on* position as it needs to.

I hunted and hunted for that stupid switch,
Never found it, probably why I leave the light
on so long, BTW mine is on right now LOL. ;D
-
Hey thanks for the info, I had no Idea there was a physical switch that controlled the light, I just figured the computer did it. I'll check the manual, see if it's the O2 sensor.
Thanks.

Someday...... I'll snap a picture of it and add it to my picture collection. *grin*

another way to shut the chekc engine light off is to disconect the negative for 15 - 30 min and it shoudl shut it off
-
I tried the battery, didn't work. :(
-
yah mind doest work if u shut off the batt either..but the smog guy played with the switch and got it to go off =)...but i think the 02 is dead ;( wah lol

Well I was checking out my zuk and discovered that my plugs where in bad shape.
The plugs are supposed to be gapped at .032 and theses where at .08.

After changing all 4 the car runs alot better. ÂÂ
-
sounds like someone got the autozone special and just tossed them in ur car w.o gapping them ::) least u got it fixed =)
-
One reason to use Bosch Plugs, they come
pre-gapped, and have protectors on the end,
this way you can see if they have been dropped
and closed the gaps, other plugs gap very widely
at times, whenever I have checked Bosch, they
are right on. This doesn't mean the plugs should
not be regapped or checked, just a Quality Thing
I like about these plugs.
-
how long u leave the negative terminal off for....it usulay takes between 15 min and 35 min
-
I dunno, it just never made the light go off
-
Yeah it must be the O2 sensor that needs to be checked, the manual says to do it every 80k and the light tripped at 160k. Is there a way to check whether or not the sensor is good, i.e. with a voltage or ohm meter?
-
Volt meter, O2 sensor puts out +1 and -1 volts,
if it bounces up and down on the meter it's still
working, (sensor has to be hot to work)
-
you could pull a code from the computer? and carry a spare coil if the plugs were that bad or just change it and check you wires also! larger gap=higher voltage.
-
Well I finally got around to taking out the drivers side speaker and turning off that damn light.
-
i left my batts neg cable off over night and the code didnt clear...as soon as u clicked it on..not started just on it would show the damn light lol

That's what Wrigley's spearmint is for. Simply unwrap a stick and steadily chew for 3.5 minutes, remove from mouth and press against the plastic cover of your instument panel, spreading outward from the center until the light magically disappears.
FYI: Do not attempt to substitute BigRed or Bubble-isious for the Wrigley's. They have a far too high sugar content, negatively effecting their adhesive properties, causing them to slide down your instrument panel leaving a nasty snail trail of sticky.
Remember that refreshing burst of minty flavor from those rock hard chunks of 10 year old gum you picked off the bottom of the church pew? Ahhh, Wrigley's goodness right kids?

5 yr old zombie thread lives!
wheres my gun
-
by now the light should be burned out
-
thanks for resurrecting the thread from the dead. i didn't know all I needed to do is flip a switch. Now I can scrape off that gum. LOL
-
I am beginning to think this "switch behind the speaker" thing is a big lie. I have a 94 and a 90 Sidekicks and have looked for this switch on kicks of almost every year and have yet to find this magic switch. If this is indeed a bunch of crap, somebody please tell me.

Its not always behind the speaker, you might have to hunt for it.
-
Thanks Rhinoman! That is just what I needed to do. It turns out that mine is right under a small removable panel under the steering panel. I found it after reading a thread from a couple years ago. I was beginning to think I might find a Yeti or Bigfoot before I found that damn switch.

Here is a pic of the switch, this is on my 94' tracker. It was originally attached to the back screw of the speaker but now i removed it from the screw and tucked it up under the dask so I can flip it when needed easier.
