Title: Capt's Timber Cruiser
Post by: Capt on January 06, 2022, 06:11:05 AM
A little History of the "Timber Cruiser".
My Neighbor bought this 1987 Samurai out of Colorado for his then girlfriend, now Wife.
Some how they wrecked the engine, the skirt on No.3 piston broke off, was riding on the connecting rod until it broke up and fell into the oil pan.
Dave asks me if I could rebuild the engine "With Him" in MY SHOP......I quickly said NO !! I have enough with Work and My Own Vehicles. (Really, I knew that I would be doing all the work, and he would just be checking in to see if it was done!)
So, after sitting at his place for over 2 years.....he asks if I will Buy It Cheap to get it out of his Yard.
I really didn't need Another Orphan Project in my yard either, but I bought it.

As mentioned engine damage, that was determined later. With that Sever Engine Knock, I just looked at finding a New Engine. And drove the Piss out of it around our property for a year, 2002-3.
Jump to 2021, on the 3rd engine, upgraded with better donor Sammy Finds, Off Roading Mods, and a 3 color Camo paint. Now at Purchase,
This Sammy was White with Screaming Purple Fenders !!
I would have lost ALL My Man Points driving it around town!

Now twice since 2003, during the Winter Lay Up, (I live in AREA BFE of the Tall Timber in Wisconsin) the Timber Cruiser has been in for Rust Removal and Repair along with upgrades for Off Roading.
This time, it Really Needed a Major Rust Abatement !!

I open them in Microsoft Paint and then use the "resize" feature - there are probably other ways, but this works for me.

OK Thanks,
Will try that tomorrow morning. I will have to resize several pix if that works

Here's the starting point, the Timber Cruiser has some Serious Rust Out Issues.

And both front fenders are about that bad. While searching for a new Soft Top, found these complete fender assemblies fairly cheap.

Then using Truck Bed Liner, painted the inner fenders inside and out. Did not do the outside skin.

Also bought New Grill cross support pieces. These were Cheap for a Reason, when I did the trial fitting, these two pieces were Seconds!! Holes punched in the wrong places, and the hood prop rod holder was welded on upside down.  But I made it fit.
After painting the Olive Drab Base coat, started to put the front clip back on.

Then I bought a left rear fender skin. This was a universal piece for a "Tin Top" but cutting it on the body line makes it a Soft Top piece

Now, this is the First Time I have used 3M body panel adhesive instead of wire welding. My Rusty Iron Junkie Friend who owns a body shop told me to use this stuff as Welding always leaves places for Rust to Start !!

This stuff IS Not Cheap......
The gun is $65.00, and the cartridges are $52.00 a piece.

But this Stuff is the Cats Ass !!

You Have to sand/grind both surfaces down to bare steel.

Smear a very thin coat covering the bare steel on both the fender skin and the body. Then put two thick beads around the bonding points to get a Good Squeeze Out.
This is to make sure moisture can't get in.
ALSO have Someone Help You, and hopefully you did your several test fitting before this point, AS....
ONCE you set it against the body, you can slide it into alignment, BUT YOU CAN NOT LET IT LIFT OFF !! Air Bubbles and Tacky Points will not let you set it on straight !!
Being my First time doing this I got Happy Krazy with the Clamps
