Title: Service Engine Light
Post by: houstonkicker on March 03, 2004, 03:00:27 AM: I have a '96 Tracker and my service engine light won't go away. I have tried everything the OBD code reader said, did a tune up, disconnected the battery, etc. any suggestions before I take it to a dealership and get the run around? Not sure if it has to do with mileage or what. I just rolled past 120,000 and it still runs fine.

Post by: 92Sidekick4x4 on March 03, 2004, 03:31:26 AM: Check your fuses,i had the same problemwith mine but it was with the brake light akways being on so i checkd all the fuses, one was blown so i replaced it and it went away once that happend, Hopefully its just as easy as that.

It's programmed to do that.
I just don't know if the switch is in the same place on a 96, as on a 95, but I would guess so.

You just have to flip the switch by your left knee, when you're sitting in the driver's seat. It's under the dash, sometimes mounted above the speaker, but in that neighborhood.

Post by: hcgalvin on March 03, 2004, 05:31:58 AM: No Bob, the switch stopped being there after 95. For a 96 and up I don't know how one does it. I have heard though, that you can disconnect the battery for more than 30 seconds and reconnect it and the light will be gone..

(course all your favorite preprogrammed radio stations might be too... )

Other than that there might be some wiretap out front you can short, or run a link between or a mechanic should be able to turn it off.

Dang Mileage Intervals!!!!

I KNEW there was a reason I've bought 3 95's, and nothing newer! Well, except my wife's GV, and I have the FSM for that...

Post by: mavapa on March 03, 2004, 09:10:35 AM: The nice thing about '97 and later is that they have OBD II, and you can get a code reader that can clear the code for about $100. Of course, you might also say that's the bad thing about them, too.

Post by: Bobzooki on March 04, 2004, 12:41:21 AM: Well, yeah - I knew about the OBD II - I have a scan tool for Mrs. Bobzooki's Grand Vitara - are you saying the scan tool can clear the Check Engine Light, when it rolls over "X" thousand miles? Hmmm... Well, she'll be rolling over 120,000 in her GV in the next month, I guess I'll see!

Post by: mavapa on March 04, 2004, 02:11:28 AM: Yeah, Bobzuki, I used the scan tool I bought to clear a code on my VW diesel. It should be able to clear any kind of code, including the routine service type. At least I assume so.
