Title: 10 or 12 bolt?
Post by: cj on April 07, 2004, 11:50:29 AM
Can anyone tell me how to determine what diffs I have front and rear so that I can order some 5.83 R&P's from Calmini. I don't really feel feel like dropping the diffs to check if I don't have to. It's for a '94 swb 8v 5spd Jap assembled Kick. Be nice if we could create a definative database for future reference for all models as nobody I have talked to seems to able to tell me positively.

The fronts are self explanitory, they are fronts. The rear is easier than you might think. Does your truck have an ABS sensor at the rear diff? If so, that is a 12 bolt, if not, it's a 10 bolt. People often refer to the fronts as 10 bolts as well, they are only smaller.
Hope that helps. All else fails, talk to one of the techs at Calmini and they will help you identify the diff.

My 97 2wd Tracker did not have ABS and it is (was) a 12 bolt :-/ now the axle is on my Kick with the 5.83's ;) Or was that directed towards the 94 Model :-/

I had heard that all the fronts were the same but wanted confirmation. The rear doesn't have abs. In fact my ride has the very first ARB lockers front and rear made for them and I am trying to find out if it was the 10 bolt that they first put into production as that will confirm what I have in the rear(they did one type and then discovered there was another as well). I bought it off the Managing Director's daughter, it was used as their test bed so it loaded up with everything from their catalog inc. suspension.

I agree with Zukipilot, I pulled a 12 bolt rear 5.12 out a 94 and it was a non abs, I believe it is model year related not dependent on the ABS.

Interesting, I only found a diff with the diffs with or without ABS, with the exception of 99 up.
Hey, even I can learn something new on here every once in a while! ;D
