Title: poor man's lift !!!
Post by: z0mb1emutha on June 02, 2012, 01:34:27 PM
I wanted to lift my sidekick the cheapest way possible so my buddy and I did some research on here and on zukikrawlers.com and came up  with this to clear 30's or 31's on our LWB Sidekicks. we are making our own strut spacers made from GM exhaust flanges and a scrap piece of schedule 60 tubing we picked up at the steel  surplus shop for $10. Also we are using Jeep ZJ springs on the rear and MK1 Explorer springs on the front with minor modifications.

those flanges look like they'd work fine.
did you use any spacers for the springs?
i don't know jeep and don't recognise the model... was the modifying cutting the coils or moding perch?

ZJ is the first generation Jeep grand cherokee 93-98 and I have to cut the bottom pigtail off the spring.

The only other suggestion I would make is to also make some kind of spacer for the rear third member as with running the heep springs it will put that connection at a really bad angle. Great job on the spacers.

Be careful if you are not dropping your front diff at the same time.  Anything more then a 2" front lift and you tend to start blowing CV's.

You might want to look at the White Rabbit build I did, going for the bare minimum to fit 33" tires on a 2-door.

But those look nice, paint them up and run em!  :)

The explorer springs will actually give you about a 2 1/2" lift even with cutting the pig tails off, but even then you should be fine with the CVs. I have been running mine 2 door with those springs since last sept, off-road and on as a daily driver and have have not had a single issue with the CV joints, though I would not go up any more than I am with out dropping the front diff.

here is my 4 door i have the same exhaust flange strut spacer (kind of common in oregon where i live) with just a coil spacer and honda accord rear springs. i had to roll the fenders in on the inside a little with plyers really simple. i didnt drop my diff because i decided do do toyota axles. i like they way it wheels and the way it drives. im running 31s just because i found them on craigs list but if it were up to me 30s are where its at they fit better, your gearing stays lower belive it or not from a 30 to a 31 is a big difference and you dont loose as much power. the wheels are painted black it looks way better. if i were keeping the ifs i would deffinetly build a 1 or 2 inch body lift just out of a 2 inchy diameter piece of steel or alluminum.

i believe 84 but there is 2 different accord modles and one set is longer and if you get those you have to cut off the top 2 loops if you use the coil spacer

I have an 88.5 samurai and i made my own 5.5 soa kit by going to the local hot rod shop and spending $38 on spring perches for a gm axle. I welded them on and turned the shock mounts from left to right ride and flipped them. It works great and is something that took me an hour to do in my garage

I make coil spacers made to fit exactly. They are pretty cheap too. The Daystar ones will be pretty soft and they will crush over time.
