Is there any way to tell what gears are in a transfer case without taking it apart? I got a bunch of spare parts when I got my samurai. The spare front dif looks to have been set up for a coil spring suspension so I was thinking the po might have regeared the transfer case. Working the case through the gears and turning the input by hand it seems that the shift pattern is different. It has a J pattern but where 2wd should be is neutral and where neutral should be is 2wd. I'm not much of a mechanic and that is based on what will and won't turn as I spin the input. Thanks for any advice.

You can determine what gears are installed by putting the vehicle up on jackstands and simply rotating the wheel and counting the revolutions of the driveshaft and at the intermediate shaft and doing some simple division math.
