Title: lift shocks
Post by: bush buster on February 06, 2012, 05:07:35 AM
I was wondering what you guys with lifted xl7's are using for rear shocks?  Because I put xl7 springs in the rear of my vitara and the mustang shocks I that are on there now just can't handle them.

bump.

i'm curious too. my crown vic shocks are all but blown and i'm looking to upgrade to xl-7 springs along with my spacer, while im doing that might as well replace the shocks.

because the xl-7 springs are taller, the shock would need to be longer right?

I think the length seems ok on the mustang shocks since the xl7 springs only yield about 3/4" lift.  But my new shocks are definately trashed after about 6 months. Whats worse is I just noticed that one of my xl7 springs is sagging already, i assume from running blown shocks with heavy loads.  I took out one of the rear seats to make a cargo bay but now that side is sagging ffs.  I think this would not have happened with some stiffer shocks to protect from bottoming out although the more noticeable issue is topping out.  The Xl7 springs are a great upgrade though, especially if you're pulling a trailer or heavy load.

If topping out is an issue, wouldn't longer shocks help solve that?

If i can find some XL-7 springs, i thin i'll just try another set of Mustang shocks. Best thing about 'em is they're cheap. I think i paid $60 for two last time i got them.

Rocky road off road makes a custom set of rear shocks for lifts over 1.5".

or OME for up to 1.5"

I am running Excel KYB's, and they may be stock for the tracker.  I do run limiting straps to keep springs in place, and have bump stops to prevent shock bottoming out.  Using the shocks to limit travel either up or down will shorten their life quickly.
I have raised the bottom shock mount to keep it from hitting on rocks, and modified it so the bottom mount bolt is length ways with the Tracker.  That allows it to rotate when stuffing wheels offroad.

According to Boondox Motorsports website:

Quote
Procomp ES1000 series shock absorbers provide great performance and value. The narrow profile will not interfere with Suzuki lower shock mounts like larger body shocks will. Includes black boots. Sold in pairs.

'89-04 Sidekick/Vitara 0-2" Lift
EXP-120510-20RS          $70.00
'89-04 Sidekick/Vitara 3-4" Lift
EXP-122510-40RS          $70.00
'89-04 Sidekick/Vitara +4" Lift
EXP-124510-45RS          $70.00

I'm pretty sure those will work. The shock mounts on my 03 XL7 looked exactly the same as my friend's 04 Vitara.

interesting find.  I wonder which model works best for a ~2" lifted XL-7 and if shock length specs are anywhere to be found.
Thanks!
