Title: Need some speculation - blown torque converter
Post by: Soupy on January 23, 2012, 10:42:45 PM
I'm trouble shooting a problem from 2000 miles away...If a torque converter lets go while driving down the road, would it have the ability to lock up in a way that it would also lock the engine up?

Normally No, a TC is bolted to the flywheel just like a clutch.

However, if it blew it may have something sticking out that jammed against the case causing a lockup.

http://www.acksfaq.com/96-FSM-v1-7A-pdf.htm (http://www.acksfaq.com/96-FSM-v1-7A-pdf.htm)

It includes a section on troubleshooting torque converters.  Or http://www.acksfaq.com/trackerfsm.htm (http://www.acksfaq.com/trackerfsm.htm) for a full list of chapters.
