Title: Deep vibration in 5th gear above 2500rpm, any ideas
Post by: BakerMT on April 15, 2011, 09:29:30 AM
So in 5th gear around 2500rpm I start getting a deep vibration, it also kicks in in 4th around 3000rpm.
Vibrates the whole rig, and keeps going even after I let out the clutch and pull it out of gear.
I'm pretty sure it's in the transmission, but just not 100%

Anyone got any ideas?

It's a 1987 with minimal mods (different hubs, and headers) bought it about 2 years ago now. Used to be towed behind an RV, the guy I bought it from used it as his hunting rig to get into the mountains. Said he owned a soft top before this one. He took the drive train out of the soft top and put it into this rig.

Is this a new vibe. Or has it been there the whole time you have owned it?

There has always been a slight grinding in 5th, but no deep vibration.
Also if I'm in neutral and let out the clutch there is a change in tone from the transmission. Not grinding but a deeper sound.
If the rig is cold and I let out the clutch in neutral the change is enough to stall the rig.

u-joints are on the end of the drive shafts. Try shacking on them and turning them and see if their is excessive play or movement.

so reading through your post you said that it will stall the motor when you let the clutch out when cold?  and you still hear it in neutral  when you are sitting still, with the clutch out right?

if thats the case and that samurai was towed with that tranny very much its most likely the output bearing on the back of the tranny.  I have been told that bearing will not lube right during towing.

something to check out  if your u joints are all good.

Hey yzf438,
I think you may have nailed it. This rig was towed behind an RV ALOT before I bought it.
Any ideas on the fix, or what I may need to say when I get it to a tranny place?
I'm just hoping to not pay a whole bunch, but I guess it is a tranny.

And yes all the U-joints look good.

But thanks again for all the tips guys and gals, thsi helps a bunch!

Your bearings in the transmission are failing and will need servicing. There are rebuild kits available for that and I think both Trail Tough and Hawk offer a rebuild service.  $500-$600 fix

Good luck, -Eric
