Alright guys starting a new thread. most of you already know the 1.6 to VW turbo diesel build. (others can see the thread in this section) but after many problems and setbacks I'm going back to gas to the tune of a 1.8 turbo motor from a 2000 Audi TT roadster. I know the diesel will never give me the mileage and power that I once envisioned so its time to have some passing power. (and then some)
heres a couple pics of starting point, how it sits today and.....
-
spent a couple hours in the shop tonight.
-
well the motors home and I'm wondering what i got myself in to ??? just a little wiring harness.... ::) wow I'm glad that's someone else's problem. I am going to do some major oil pan work.
-
Cool conversion! That should be a lot of fun!!
-
Let the headaches begin! I bet your getting pretty good at removing and installing motors by now.

That Suzuki is gonna have had more motors in it than Sasha Grey >:D  >:D
That is gonna kick some ass in there. how does the motor and tranny mating look, easy, moderate, difficult?.
I too have had this dream also(father has a supercharged, Dinan tuned Mini Cooper). As much fun as bentparts has had building his turbo rig, it will never perform and be as dependable as a setup as one that has been engineered and tested like a stock setup has. The biggest problem i have thought is mating them. The wiring, although difficult, can be done. Your local, so it would be interesting to see it(and ride in it)when it's done so good luck!
-
it will be a easy lash-up using the diesel adapter and modifying as necessary. the biggest looking challenge will be the oil pan. I might have to fabricate a new one from scratch....or????
I also looked up the engine code and its the 180 hp instead of 150!!! yeeee haaaaaaa!! you or any local zukiworld guys are always welcome to stop by.
-

Mmmmm, Sasha Grey... Er, I mean Audi Motor. Yea, that's it. Audio Motor.
Is the oil pan off to the front or the back? You might have to modify your oil pickup as well.
-
its actually rectangular box, no sump or kick out its aluminum too. I figured on pick-up mod also. could just trailslayer it.....hummmmm. :-\
-
Your absolutly right Locjaw, nothing is as refined as factory engineered, except if it's one of those GM fiascos, but that's another story. I've often lusted after the engine in my wifes MB 230SC. That little supercharged 2.0 ltr is such a kick ass power plant, gobs of bottom end torque, revs like hell and gets 33mpg at 80 on the highway. That being said there are some great tuning companies out there that approach and sometimes exceed factory quality in terms of refinement and driveability, I just can't afford them! Really looking forward to following this to see how it turns out.
Ahh, Sasha Grey, I get ahem.... all choked up just thinkin about her. ;)
-
Any idea on engine height? Is it going to fit under the hood?
-
dimensionally it will fit great other than the oil pan issue. (its gunna be a challenge)
-
spent some time in the shop tonight (its 2am now). heres a couple progress pics and mock up. ;)

it's not just the cost of the tuning company though, those guys spend thousands just building the motor to handle the HP and sure as shit it aint gonna go 200,000 miles!
and.....
I figured i could get everyones "attention" with the Sasha Grey mention (http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/sex/t1513.gif) (http://yoursmiles.org/t-sex.php?page=1)

Gotcha on the longevity aspect. I just picked up a beater of a 93 4 door Sidekick that I"m gonna do a mild build for my daughter with. Other than leaking everywhere worse than the exxon valdez, the things got well over 200k on it and the engine still sounds tight. My modified turbo engine on the other hand, well lets just say it revs freely now. IE rattlier and loose ;D
I guess my concern with this particular swap is the electronics. I'm sure Jluck can fab up whatever mounts, exhaust, metal bits etc that he'll need. It's the amount of sensors and computer cross-referencing they do to keep that engine running well and the related computers that would deter me. Speaking of which, Jluck, did you get the ecu, and whatever computers are involved with the wiring harness?
them banana's are doin it wrong

yep got the computer, exhaust (with dual 02 sensors),pedal (drive by wire) lots more harness than necessary (lets hope)

With my experiences, that is just barely enough. Do you have both FSM's, or at least complete wiring diagrams?
-
heres a couple pics of the motor and trans lash up and how I'm doing my motor mounts.
-
Any updates?
-
Audi A4 and VW Passat also use the 1.8T engine and in that configuration it is mounted in the car like in a Tracker so those oil pans might suit you needs better. They are front sump pans with the engine lay-ed over somewhat to the right. The pans are different depending on which year engine you have. If you have an external water pump then it's one style pan, if the waterpump is turned by the timing belt then it's the later style pan. As for wiring if you are using the wiring from the TT you are going to have to deal with the immobilizer which is built into the ECU and needs to read the ignition key through the instrument cluster. There are guys around that can reprogram the ECU to not need to see the key and cluster. Another way around it would be to use the ECU and wiring from an earlier car that didn't use the immobilizer stuff.
-
here's the motor mount plates,(my rudimentary fab work) tomorrow the motor goes back in for final test fit, tack the outriggers from motor mount to plates pull it all back out, finish weld, and hopefully final install tomorrow or the next day ;D
-
daily update.....not a whole lot done I was busy installing a waste oil burner that I scored but other than that I got the passenger side MM mocked up. I will add gussets around the square tube for directional support. (and the brass spacer butch is temporary so easy on the hate!)LOL
-
Looks like the adapter plate worked, and you should be able to use stock drive line. There is also lots of room left. Looking good.
-
well I got some time to give a update....I lowered the front diff about 1" here's how I did mine....(once again easy on the weld bashing its a new welder I'm trying to figure out)
-
alright then....here's my finished motor mounts also. I have to get a different type of oil pan (and diff drop brackets) but once that stuff comes the motor goes in for good!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Looks strong enough, no rubber though? what about vibration? Or maybe I'm just missing something.
-
diff or motor? both have the oem mounts still.
-
Knew I was missing something, that looks like it'll work great. Still waitin' on utahskibum to give us a shipping quote on the parts. I'm sure you could use those drop brackets right about now.
-
What are you doing now with the 1.9L VW?
Boat anchor?
-
well after a 700 mile parts getting road trip with honkey_2.0 im closer to having everything I need but still waiting on snail mail.we went down to trail tough and I have to say the owner brent is a heck of a good guy,as busy as they were he acted as he had all the time in the world for us.(not a shameless plug but truth) after the medford visit it was time to head up into wa. state to get two more Audi 1.8t's then back home. :sleepy:
I got some clean up and paint work done on engine bay, trans and a couple t/cases. maybe drop brackets and oil pan will be here today.
-
Two more? I so that you can drop one in mine when your done? :D
-
got the front permanently located tonight (thanks utahskibum) also got the tranny on the engine for good this time I hope.
FWIW; the front diff ended up 1.5" lower than stock.
sorry I just had to add the audi. (this is the one my motor came out of) JK
-
Where are you located? I'm in SoCal, and all the good fab shops are backed up horribly. btw, I also own a Passat w/1.8T engine. They're great and will last a long time if you use the right fluids and change them as directed. You can get great turbo upgrade kits to get up to 350HP w/o changing ingine internals. Going over that starts requiring bottom end work. And, because they're turbo u'gs, you can still get good gas mileage if you keep your foot out of it, although that's not why you do them ;-) www.goapr.com (http://www.goapr.com) for one nice kit (inconel manifold!!), GIAC and others if you search. My desired 'zuki mods are so far limited to simply getting a good exhaust to replace the log manifolds. Custom fab in SS to last, but as I said, all the good shops are too backed up.
Looking forward to seeing this done up!!
-
If you can get 350 safe reliable HP out of one of those, damn what a great little engine. I'd be happier than a pig in shit if I had 200!
-
These motors have been known to crack 800 hp. (crazy) but 300 is ez to achieve with 'em with stock internals like the other post said. That's German engineering!
-
Suhweeeeet!
-
got my oil pan today....yeeee haaaaa.... this is a hybrid oil pan from eBay.(the steel will be easier for me to work) didn't know what to expect in the quality department but too my suprise there was a oem stamp that was covered up, and for 1/3 the dealer price! ;D
here's a pic of my seats too. (my walls are not near as ugly as photo portrays)
-
I saw the 1.9 vw on CL and was wondering how you could give it away at that price after all you put into doing it. I have never been around a 1.9 vw, but I was talking to a guy that had one in his sami and said it was an excelent setup loads of power and great fuel economy. how much more power does the audi have? Ialso notice you are the only one that paints anything. I always debate the fact to paint or just leave the aluminum look. what paint do you use? how do you prep it before painting? I see some people paint there transmissions and then the paint starts flaking off. I am thinking full bright lime green on motor trans and tcase for my sami.

without proper prep work a paint job is worthless.CLEAN,CLEAN,CLEAN and repeat. I paint most everything due to the caustic cleaners used by everybody (including self) that cause raw aluminum to corrode I also live pretty close to the pacific ocean...so kind of a double whammy.
I love the raw/blasted aluminum look it just doesn't last for me.and when I dont want to get out the paint guns (most of the time) I only use rustoleum brand or duplicolor. BTW KRYLON IS JUNK as of the last few years.
when I turn the key on the audi I will be in the 220-250 hp range. under 5 second 0-60 I hope >:D
-
well.....I put in another drain plug 'cuz the other one was wright over the diff, Oil pan on,engine IN!!!! this was is point where I jump around the shop playing the air guitar!!! HELL YEA it feels good and the oil pan clears perfectly (all those measurements payed off this time) I went ahead a put the t/case on too, now its time for lunch ;)
-
Plenty of room!
-Eric
-
looks sweet. i wish i had money to burn so I could get some crazy ideas in my projects.
-
Your clearance is comparable to mine. With the turbo, what are you running for exhaust I muffler?
-
I wish I had money to LIVE :)
-
There's never money to burn. I do put in lots and lots of hours at my regular job and work on the side too.(almost all of my play money is self generated so I don't take away from my family's well-being)
Just curious, what is it you do at your regular and side jobs?
-
I picked up a new turbo to mock up with so heres how it will sit.
-
I like all the room you have in there. I am using Cherry Bomb Turbo mufflers, and they are a little over the top. I know the Turbo on yours will break up the hard exhaust sound a little, but mine announce Heavy Pedal too much. fwiw
-
That is freakin sweet!
-
I ordered my intercooler and piping kit last night ;D ;D now I'm sure I will be jumping around like a 8 year old with a can of rockstar till it gets here
there both eBay elcheapo stuff but I have heard good things about them so what the heck....
-
looks like a lot of pipe for the job. what is cheap?
-
looks like a lot of pipe for the job. what is cheap?
that's what she said >:D
-
who picked up the new turbo??? >:D
-
its now the slow tedious boring part of the build (all the little crap).
I spent a day and a half scouring the wrecking yards looking for the wright hose or ends or a combo of the two to make a German to jap power steering hose. to no avail. but as I was passing a 2 door tracker in one of the yards I grabbed a stock p/s hose just to have one (my diesel conv. left me with out). and just for kicks I pulled the Audi banjo bolt out of my pocket just to check and viola! its a match. and its the perfect shape.....sun shines on a dog's a$$ every once and a while by god!
other pics of the water manifold that I cut down cut fins in it, massaged it into shape and welded it up.(I also filled the stubbed end with melted lead to insure it's leak free.(we will see).
-
It looks like it's all coming together. It's all the little details that take so much time and can be so nerve racking.
-
Sweet build! 1.8T's are bad ass!
<SUBSCRIBED!>
E.
-
HEY BUD IS JOHN---
ARE THOSE SEATS FROM CORBEAU??? IF NOT HAVE YOU EVER CHECKED THEM OUT.
-
not allot of progress last few day, been waiting on deliveries. did mock up I/C piping and intercooler. taking vacation in a week to dedicate to the kick should be fun! ;D
and all that extra piping...hummm.....what extra piping :P is the snorkel idea too redneck?
-
Looking good Jared... and yes the snorkle is too redneck. :P
-Eric
-
I spent alot of time in the shop tonight with very little progress....I did figure out how I was going to plumb my capillary tube for the mechanical temp gauge. I didn't want it easily visible like it was on the diesel (butch).
and since when is heater hose priced per inch!? ???
heres also how i'm doing any crimped connections on my swap.; there oem type crimp clamps just too clean up the engine bay and eliminate them damn skin stealing screw clamps.
-
not alot done today just started building heater core hoses. and woulnt 'ya know it I didnt get one size (and only one needed) clamp so another weeks wait for a .20 clamp! :-\
I am pretty happy with the turn out.
-
Just looking at your three piece hose. When I was doing my swap I went down to the parts store and asked to look through their heater hoses. Second store I went in had both heater hoses just like I needed. I got one that looks similar to that. I hate having those hose clamps where I have to shove my hands (I don't have your kind of room).
-
I suppose I'm a bit late on a update.... caught the vicious flu and was down and out! :sleepy:
have not got near as much done as I hoped but thats par for the coarse with any project I reckon. I did recycle a calmini rear 3" lift that went on tonight and pulled the radiator and I/C piping to go a different route. but at the mercy of the delivery man again.
-
How did you finally work out the center diff mount?
-
I had a long, full and fun day in the shop today. I started modifying my a-arms to work with the long coils. I know this has been done a thousand times so I wont drag it out but heres a few pics. of how I did mine.
I cut around the rim of the coil bucket all but 1" or so.
dropped the bucket down 1"
rolled some plate to fit and zapped 'er up.
it fits really nice too!
-
also couldn't leave the ball joint well enough alone either. I wanted to center the tire in the wheel well and cant the ball joint out a bit for alignment purposes.
I think it looks soooo much better with the tire moved forward ;D .
-
I made a temporary one. I contacted the person I got the lift from for a pic and measurements and he said that he meant to send it too as he was not going to use it! score!! ;D so I just have to wait for it.
have you ran stock a-arms with calmini coils before? I cant get them in....PITA!!! ???
I run modified stock a arms, like you did but with the Hagen widening. I do run Calmini coils for now, but with the Coil bucket mod and the wideing I also use a 1.25" spacer! Try squeezing that together!
-
I did my mod the opposite way. Instead of dropping it down, I raised the cup up an inch to give me more lift with same springs (of course I also increased those too).
How did your alignment go with moving the ball joint forward?
I have been thinking on an easy way to get more clearance for larger tires, so this looks good.
What sized tires are you running?
What about a good photo?
-
Nice parts. But, I thought you were supposed to buy the arms from bentparts? Looks like you got around that though!
-
I would really like to have them (badly) but I have shook the piggy bank to death. and I have had a couple sour deals lately an loss my ass.
-
Shoot that sucks. Nice parts though. I really like to see people make stuff work with great skill!
-
got my heater core coolant lines done today ;D
also got my body lift spacers back from machine shop and installed too :-\ damn body lifts anyways
so heres ride height of the kick with the calmini stuff a couple mods and the 1" body lift.
-
also completely redoing the intercooler piping and radiator, the radiator is for a early 90's supercharged Thunderbird that my friend drew discovered would work perfect. its real metal too!
also played a bit of dress up with the motor just to give me the feel I'm getting some where!
-
Looking awesome. I like that you were able to use my cal mini rears. Your 3 rd upper will be there tomorrow! You are a up standing person to deal with! A true man of his word. Thank you for covering the difference in shipping! If their is anything I can do for you in the future let me know.
-
Those radiators work perfect don't they. Looks good.
-
spent some time at the wrecking yard today. I got a 2 door brake booster and master to help with clearances around the intake manifold and also cleaned up some under hood real estate, made it look alot cleaner and better IMO.
scored the one manual hub I have been looking for and a cup holder console to-boot, along with the booster was only 25 bucks ;D
well the kick is finally going together, slow but sure. im now running the turbo lines and trivial items.

I will remember that radiator, if my stock one isn't enough.
It's a good feeling when things start fitting, isn't it? I enjoy watching your progress. Thanks for the entertainment.
-
I remember doing that with my wiring. The final fix was redoing all the wiring, and finding a ground that I know was not done before. *** Rerouting does take time, and patience.
You sure have a lot more room than mine. Of course that exhaust and air supply will eat up a lot of it. How close to hearing a sound out of it are you?
-
well its last day of my vacation and I didn't get near as much done as hoped (par for the coarse tho).I did get the coolant pipe outlet clocked. (it was going straight in to the throttle body) as I mixed and matched parts from other audi 1.8t's.
I also got I/C piping closer to perfected but waiting on proper elbows to show up.
I also added a oil catch can.
In one pic you can see my ammo can trail dinner (burritos an such) oven! ;D
-
Just my opinion, but I think that motor looks better without the top cover.
-
Up close it's god-awful ugly and I want something covering the coil packs too. There's some aftermarket covers I might try too
-
I forgot about all the electricals on top. My wifes MB has a cover so big you cant SEE the engine. Hell, I dont even know what it looks like after 8 years! It's supposed to be supercharged though and I'd like to take a look but she wont let me! I guess she knows what happens when I got ahold of even simple tools
-
So, whats going on with this, anything new to report?
-
Must be wiring, when you are working on that, there is nothing to show or tell until it done. But if he doesn't report soon, I'll stop checking.
-
Didn't peg you for one of us "older" types. Yeah, the daily aches and pains of accumulated injuries continue to take their toll on all us "old guys." Be kind to your neck and give it time to heal, well heal as much as possible for an old fart !

I'm not that old (30's) but have been hard on my body and its getting back at me.

this ones for you BRD HNTR! :P
finally a chance to do a bit and post!
I made a adapter for the thunderbird radiator out of 1" square tubing, just welded in some 1/2" round tube to fit the suzuki dementions and drilled the to to fit the thunderbird mounts.
then went to the intercooler and got it totally plumbed in. also got the radiator mounted. (I was able to hide the upper rubber mounts)
-
ordered my fuel rail today. ouch! but it is what is keeping me from getting this turd done! also dropped the radiator off at the rad. shop to have a 90 put in the lower outlet.
-
I've been waiting on my fuel rail so I tackled a couple tasks. first I built a oil drain line, then finally got some fluids going in it! ;D in the way of royal purple 5w-20w and a fresh filter to fire it up with.
then on to the power steering res. I used a newer one from a 2.0L tracker and mounted it where the old ABS module was. now all the fluid reservoir's are together. then some more fluid!!! feels like I'm getting somewhere ;D
-
It's gettin' there!
-
I really want to see that thing when it is all done. looking good.
-
Wow, that looks really good!!! I think that you are going to be really happy that you went with the thunderbird radiator, not only does it fit better but it will also do a better job at keeping your engine cool. I've got the same one and it keeps the 4.0 plenty cool, at least so far. Now that you are getting to putting in fluids, I'm curious what you plan to run in your tranny, transfer case and axle gears. I'm getting ready to do my +/- 100 mile flush and want to start running some good stuff in all those locations, right now I'm just running napa gear oil. Did you learn anything cool in that class on oil you took?
-

Yep those radiators are great! My I/C piping fit around it good too. I'm glad you discovered them drew! And about the oil....after I do the ringr conversion I will change all my fluids to royal purple. Maybe I'm just a sucker for marketing but I do believe in there product! The wifes tdi beetle runs better than ever after switching to RP. It made a HUGE difference!
About the oil/bearing/lubrication class yes I learned a bunch and maybe we will have to sit around the fire table and bs about it one of these days :D

I wouldn't mind hearing what you have learned about that subject either.
-
Well, you talked me into it, I just ordered all the royal purple I can hold :0) I was able to get 12 qt's of oil, 6 qt's of gear oil, a bottle of purple ice and a qt of royal purple power steering fluid delivered to my door for less than $200. I think that will fill everything except my axles and I want to wait on them until I re-gear. What is your time off schedule looking like? Work is slow for me and I was thinking about heading out your way on one the next days you plan to spend in the shop.
-
You should have a Suzuki Oregon swapped motor meet, there are enough rides with swapped out motors in Portland - Salem area to make it interesting.
I might even be able to run down as a Visitor.
-
Sounds fun. Maybe meet&greet short trail run and dinner?
-
Lets do it, I'm always down for wheelin and eating!!!!
-
Lets do it, I'm always down for wheelin and eating!!!!
Well, set up a date, time, place and I'll do my best to make it. My wife said she would go for a dinner out. I would like to meet you guys, and see your builds, so I know I'll have a good time (unless I bust something big before Zukafari).
-
I figured I better post something before I got scalded. ;)
I haven't worked on the kick much as Ive been prepping a house to sell and I'm waiting on a pile of delivery's and next week should be exciting and the kick should be mechanically assembled soon! ;D
not as fast as drew and Greg on the lightning fast 4.0 toy conversion! I still cant believe there small miracle!
anyway the only thing I did was put in a vacuum manifold. I might not really need it but it will make a nice common place to run any vacuum motive items. and I'm also using a grey/silver silicone hoses for all vacuum lines. (easy visual reference).
sounded like a good idea one late night. ???
-
That looks sweet!!! Cant wait to see it all plumbed. Have you thought about upgrading your fuel pump any more? If I'd known your fishing trip fell through earlier I might have come over for a bit but maybe next weekend.
-
Lets do it, I'm always down for wheelin and eating!!!!
That would be fun. I don't know if I would be able to have mine done in time if it was set up real soon, but it would be fun to see all the rigs.

oooh Mr postman....keep them coming! ;D
got my radiator back today along with a pile off goodies. the radiator outlet was modified to come out just above the steering box so I wouldn't need a mess of hoses and connectors. I like it! ;D
still waiting on a few more items then this weekend should be a blast!
also I put together a power station using my existing fuse/ammeter and a marine buss block.
-
yea for me!!! ;D spent some time on the kick tonight doing little but rewarding things.
re-wired my buss block and got rid of that pink hot lead(I will miss it though ::)), made a ground wire and up sized both hot leads.
then.....
made a half-ass shroud for my electric fan to rivet too. (just a sheet of metal with a hole in it) but it worked very well.
then.....
started my exhaust with a stainless turbo flange from one of the Audi motors machined down to slip fit the new 3" o.d. stainless heavy wall tube. (I was going to use 2.5" but I guess I wanted the challenge). I will add pyrometer and o2 sensor bungs once finish welding is done.
pretty good day for 5 or 6 hours. we'll see if tomorrow is productive. ;)
-
That looks awesome!! With 3" exhaust you'll have no trouble breathing and it should sound really good, are you still planning on running a straight pipe? It looks like your down pipe is pretty close to your speedo cable, I'm sure you've already thought about that. I like your fan shroud, that should make your fan more effective, I didn't do one on mine but seeing how well yours turned out I might rethink that. Have you thought about putting any kind of a battery disconnect in? It might give you some peace of mind to know that you can kill all power quickly and easily with all the electrical work that your doing and still have to do under that hood. Its so exciting to see some more progress!!! Did you get your fancy fuel rail? Once you get that cart load of parts on it's gonna be time to light a fire under your wiring guys hiney! I'll be calling you today some time and gonna try to make it out this afternoon if your around.
-
WHY is it that all of the really COOL stuff is always so dad-gum FAR AWAY from me? >:( I would LOVE to see the rides like this in person, instead of all of the hacks that I do get to see. At least after looking at the "local talent" I don't feel near as bad about my stuff. ::) :P
-
drew:
I'm going to wrap most (if not all of the exhaust) with exhaust wrap to keep things "burney-stinky-plasticy-melty"free.
>And yep on the straight pipe or maybe a small flow-master.
>No fuel rail yet. (kinda getting pissed) its the closest manufactured thing to this project and taking the longest. :-\
>I have thought about a master disconnect, just dunno yet.
>I might wire it myself if the wire guy keeps blowing me off. (dont want to but will).
and come on down, I will be around all day.
T-wrex:
maybe some of up left-coaster's will just have to drive our junk out your way! I plan on putting some serious miles on mine. and theres no "talent" here just patients and refusal to quit. ;)
this is stuff anybody can do if they want too.
-
Seen Jluck rig in person today....its gonna be pretty awesome when its done.
-
daily update.
ran a line for my oil pressure gauge and used a splitter block to use the factory sidekick sender for the dummy light also.
tip: put a small vacuum cap over the end of the copper line to aid in feeding it through firewall and grommets
and never use the nylon line supplied with most gauges, I know of a few motors that bleed to death because of them
I also made up a cradle for a large roll of stainless mig wire I have had around the shop for years. I put it remotely behind the welder. it worked very good. :)
then welded up the down-pipe and spent allot of time smoothing it. it turned out good enough to wrap with exhaust wrap. :P
(some anti-bling).
finished the evening with some wiring harness spring cleaning.
-
last update for a few days....gotta go back to work....damn it!
finally got my fuel rail ;D but need to wait for one more fitting before I can plumb it. I drilled and tapped the end plug for a fuel pressure gauge.
the fit around the coolant pipe is perfect!
I finished up the evening with some winch wiring.
check out the gauge drew ;)
-
Jluck, I hear you on the patience thing when it comes to build ups. I simply see ALOT of stuff that would be good, IF the people had taken the time/effort/patience to do it well. On the roadtrip, thing, well COME ON OVER. I'd love to show you guys how we wheel over here in the land of mud, rocks, and sand. Then again, WE might get to met ya'll one day next year, since we are looking at moving out west/south, around the 'zona area most likely.
-
What, no flex tube on that downpipe Jluck? How is the system going to handle the vibes and motor shifting?
-
That's what the doughnut is for on many stock exhaust systems, just
gives a little movement, but I never had any flex on my Sidekick and
didn't have any problems
Wild
-
I always figured that the factory rubber bushings/hangers were suffiecent, as the engineers have to have a vehicle make it throught at least the warranty period without too much trouble. EXCESSIVE engine movement could/will cause problems down the road of course.
-
All that work you've put in, better safe than sorry IMO. They're cheap enough ( flex couplers ) why not just splice one in while you have it on the bench? Another thing to consider is the high rate of expansion that paticular part of the exhaust is going to go through being downstream of the turbo outlet. A little extra room to grow and contract couldn't hurt.

x2
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
-
yep I should just do it. I will just put one to the end of the down pipe and that will give me a good transition to thin-wall (regular stainless) exhaust tubing.

Yep. ;)
-
alright you shamed me in to ordering a flex. :P
and heres the wire mountain that I am starting to decipher. and identify and cuss.....yep already.
also waiting on one lonely aeroquip fitting to finish fuel system.
-
I thought you had a " wiring guru" that was going to help with that?
-
I thought so too but I cant seem to get him out here. :-\
-
I spent weeks, just getting the cross connections on paper. Then after wiring it I couldn't get rid of a communication fault, so I completely rewired the cross connections only to find a ground that I know was not hooked up. Works great now. Suzuki computers are a lot more forgiving than all the WARNING's indicate. I hope the Audi's are too for you.
I found it very helpful to put the page number or numbers for each pin, when I made my list. It helps to just jump back to it when you find two wires going to same place.
-
I may have found another option. I am currently looking in to it.
while waiting for some confirmation on the "other option", I spent most of the day working on little odd's and ends that I have been procrastinating on. (drivelines, check&fill all fluids, changed out a couple bolts that have been bugging me. etc). also hi-graded some headlights for the Audikick
the photos suck but better than nothing. my camera has a mind of its own!
-
It looks so much happier with the front end back on!!! I really like the color of your kick, I've always had a soft spot for red rigs. When you get ready to start in on the wiring and get all your schematics let me know, I really think that with a little patience perseverance and a few more grey hairs we can figure it out and I think that you will be much happier in the long run if you are proactively involved in the wiring. Knowing what you've got and where you've got it will be very beneficial should you ever have to fix, upgrade or change anything. I was able to make it to see Duncan before they closed but he didn't have the cowl seal in.... I've got your sweet new zip tie things and will bring them to dinner, I'll let you know as soon as the cowl rubber comes in.
-
once again at the mercy of Mr. delivery dude. the only real engine related thing I did was "built" a lower radiator hose using one silicone elbow,a union, two "bandit" clamps, and a rubber hose and made my first silicone hose out of the whole mess. (I used self bonding silicone tape) its what all the silicone hoses/connectors are made with, its cool stuff.
then turned to the rear....when I get spare moments I am going to build a rear bumper. I used a old full size receiver hitch with a real 2" stinger port.,cut it down used some angle to attach it to the frame and will integrate it in to the whole rear bumper assy.
-
remember how you build that bumper so you can help me make one when your done!!! Looks good, are you going to integrate back up lights, can rack or swing away spare? I finally got my back up light fixed after breaking it on your hill, wish I had them built into a bumper with some protection....
-

Yep yep And yep! And I already have "better" ideas for a second one.
-
no motor goodies today soooo back to the rear.......
-
looks good can't wait to see how you rig up a swing away spare tire rack without hiding your rear tail lights.
-
heres a few more of the rear. you get the idea i'm sure. I wont put any more up until its done. ;)
-
Bumper is looking good.ill take a front bumper for mine when you have time. lol
-
I'll keep you in mind when I have some of that "free time" :P.I might build a front one for mine next.
-
WOW ~ Nice build you have going on.
My bro-in-law had a Audi AWD wagon that would smoke all 4 in 3rd when you stand on it. It defiantly got me thinking...
Any educated guess how the Audi will react in the truck platform? (Different tranny gear spacing / heavier chassis / block aero package ) Just curious as I fully expected the VW Diesel to be the perfect swap.
I'm always looking out for outside the box swaps and think very highly of this one (Cant wait to see the results).
-
hey jluck are you still going to give me the info or part# on the super coupe radiator that you used in the Audikick.that way i can see what kind of deal i can get on them???
-
Whitfield- I'm tring to keep my expectations low as I was so heartbroken over the diesel ordeal. But I am hoping for 20+ mpg and I will have about 50 more hp than stock Audi from the get-go.(230-250) I think it will be great.
And I will have about the same if not lighter curb weight than the TT roadster!!!
Sidekick65- The radiator I used was a csf brand PN# 2634 found it at autoparts wharehouse (I think). For like 160.00
-
Man I like that rear bumper!! It is shaping up really nice, keep up the good work!!
-
I think I have enough metal for another one here. ;)
-
what gage steal are you using? Are you going to add bracing on the inside once the skin is complete? How are you going to work the spare tire swing into it? Maybe I should just wait patiently and watch the master work ::)
-

I actually already added some more 1" square tube behind it but didn't get pics. and the metal is 1/8"(I think it's enough). I would rather eventually trash it and build another one vs. having a 200 pound bumper. and frankly I have no certain idea on the tire carrier but I am kinda sure I will figure out something. and maybe you will just have too come down a take a look-see :)
-
just got a call from Duncan and your cowl seal rubber strip piece just came in and there was one more of the zip tie deals with it, I guess I only gave you 9 before. I'm working tomorrow but there is a good chance that I'll be able to run out and deliver your stuff and drool on your bumper Saturday.
-
finally got a time window to work on the kick.
the 90*fuel fitting I have been waiting weeks on just got here too ;D ;D
also got my v-clamps for the exhaust and spent some time working on the exhaust system. I did not get a flex where I wanted one but there is one down stream at-least. I decided to do 100% stainless exhaust using 10 ga. material (1/8") it should last a life time.I did a cross over instead of running the exhaust down the passenger side. it was a bit of a challenge getting 3" pipe around the bell-housing and over top the front drive-line. the pics are hard to really see whats going on but you should get the jist. the pic with the flex joint is the mid pipe. I am using two gasket-less machined v-clamps to have breaks in the system for any maintence work that will be needed. :D
in the first and second pic, the odd shape compound curve gives access to the drain and fill plugs for the transmission too.
also sent the wiring harness out today ;D
-
Happy day!!! The end of this pice of your project is in sight!!!! It's looking like there is a really good chance that you'll be up and running before Memorial day, you should think about heading East with Eric and us and who ever, you have got to be sooo excited!!
-
Yep I'm getting pretty jacked! My financial dept. (ms.jluck) gave me the clearance to order the engine management standalone computer today too. (I have been dreading that expense). So as soon as I can get the company I'm working with to write a program for my specific build I will have everything to complete this phase of the build.
Then interior rebuild...... Then 4 link, sas with atomic axles (hopefully).,35-37's
Or none of the above and start a Sammy build.
Opinions????? ???
-
Nah. You just spent all that time piecing together the Calmini lift and making your own control arms and haven't even had a chance to try it out first.
Plus, you've really intrigued me with all this talk about a LWB build. Go for that. The 4dr will be awesome enough already.
-
slow progress on the Audikick today but progress none the less.
got the fuel rail plumbed and installed and somehow got the two 8mm bolts fished into the upper water manifold what a bitch! there down under the fuel regulator behind the head. and it all had to go together at the same time for clearance issues. god I hope there are no leaks back there. ::)
I found these stainless steel flat bars that I will use for muffler hangers at a scrap recyclers for less than 1.00 each! ;D
maybe by tomorrow I will have the fuel rail charged and coolant system filled ;D
-
I worked on the audikick all day today. :) spent the majority of the time with wiring and routing. then on to the exhaust. the down-pipe back to the muffler will be done and installed once I can find a way to bore two 1" holes in the stainless for O2 sensors.
I put some fuel in it today and that was a damn good feeling! ;D
also filled the cooling system with water to leak check before the OEM antifreeze goes in.
I can hear the fuel pump running but there is no rail pressure ??? will look at that more tomorrow.
-
Nice weld on that pipe. ;)
-
I like the two pieces of "shop equipment" in the background, looks like a workbench.
;)
-
yep those redneck workbenches are great. they are incredibly stout too. I have used them for Jack stands in the past. I used-to empty allot of those "shop equipments". ;)
-
good productive day on the Audikick.
-got holes drilled for o2 bungs (thanks drew and greenlee) also welded them in I put in two but might only use one for now. then I heat wrapped the down-pipe.
moving to electrical
-I moved the factory and winch/acc. wiring to behind the washer res. to clean up the bay a bit. I had to heat and mold the res. just a bit and lengthen some of the wires but it was well worth it IMO. it really cleaned things up.
-intake,air filter,cables...
- oh the little things....starts feeling good when things like the battery cables go on! (check out those custom 4/0 monsters that I build) also ran multiple grounds. (I'm a ground wire freak).
-I think I managed to build the worlds heaviest intake tube ::) it only 4" long but I used a sidekick axle tube. (it was the only thing I could find the correct size.)
-capped it off with a good 'ol K&N
- also got the exhaust in and suspended to the muffler.(waiting on a stainless flowmaster) then I will finish it 100%
-then finished the night by getting my gauges put in the pod and building them a wire harness.
thats about it. I might order my stand-alone Monday and my harness is being worked on right now....she will run soon ;D
oh yea....I hooked up the starter wire and turned the motor over with the key today!!!!!!!!!!! just to hear it crank!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;

WOW, your patience and attention to detail is really paying off!!! I can't believe how nice that engine bay looks!!!!
-

I agree. I do want to see it, and yours someday soon.
-
You might have to plan a trip down this way or invite us up for a weekend of wheelin. I almost PM'd you, my wife and I were in Seatle for the weekend, but we were busy with family and we drove her car ... Greg said he had fun in Moab with you and some of his pics looked really cool, if we can't all meet up before we should try to meet up on some future run!!!
-
In your last picture, where did you get that a-pillar pod for your gauges? Is it for a different make and model, how's the fit?
-
its a "universal" one from glowshift (I think) got it from ebay. there designed to heat and mold to fit. its ok but not perfect. I should have it in soon.
-
I initially tried one of those same ones from gloshift to mount my guages, but just couldn't get the angles right to be able to see them well. Hope you have better Jluck. haha. And, your engine bay does look great.
Not to get off topic, but I feel the need to mention this. One of the upullits I went to looking for fan parts was staffed by a group of idiots whose combined iq was less than 100, and there were 4 of 'em. Anyway, when I told one of the creatins what I was looking for, he said " why would you even drive one of those." I wished I had mine there to show him WHY. Or Yours, and many others here too, but I think it would all be lost on him and his pea brain.
-
I put one of the universal 2 pod gauge mounts from auto zone and it works pretty good, the gauges are lined up right at a good angle but it only goes 3/4 of the way up my a pillar and where it stops is a little funky, but not terrible, kinda wish I would have gotten one with 3 pods....
-
this might not look like much to anybody but it felt damn good to see that fuel pressure gauge rise! :). like a noob, the last time I put it together I crossed the lines behind the head.
I also wired in the electric fan and made a outlet for the diverter (blow off valve). I am going to hit 'er hard tomorrow I hope.
-
Man, you are sooooo close, can't wait for you tyo get the electrics sorted and get that thing running. I be it's gonna be a screamer! Your going to get addicted to that turbo whoosh and never get off boost! ;D
-
Patiently waiting to hear it.
-
Patiently waiting to hear it.
me too. I have not gotten one damn email back from the guy who is doing my harness and read on some forums he is super slow. (one guy waited 4 1/2 months) >:( so I am looking into another company now but it looks like its going to be 700-1000 more than the first. :'(
I want this thing done for memorial day weekend.
today I spent hours on it and really didn't get much dramatic progress. I got my gauges in and finally hooked up to the dimmer to work with the OE cluster and put in mini buss bars for each lead to have a clean common place.......
-
Well you know the old saying.............. If you want something done.............
Hope you can light a fire under that guy and get your harness in time

I know.....it's the computer and software I cant do myself. I hope I get some good news this week.
today I didn't have much time with mothers day and all....but I did fix the hole for the twin-sticks. my welder recently got f-d up so I had to use some body icing to smooth out the floor.... ::)
-
Jared - I think you need more gauges!
:)
but seriously, it's looking good man. I hope you can get that wiring guy soon.

The master has spoken! 8 more gauges on order! :P JK!
I just got off the phone with the computer guy! I'm so excited I can barley type!!! My standalone will be done and overnighted to me by this weekend!

got text back this afternoon. my harness is done, computer is programmed, ships tomorrow! hell yea! ;D :D ;D 8)
-
I got a few spare hours today. any guesses where I spent them..... ;)....
I got the exhaust most of the way done today. it tucked up real nice and I poked it through the rear bumper for some added protection (I don't think 1/8" stainless will need it though). maybe tomorrow I will smooth welds and do a half-ass polish like the rest of the pipe.
I think I have as many hours into the exhaust system as I do the whole rest of the build.
a side note: the paypal gangsters froze my account due to the amount I sent for the harness so now I have to wait for them to pull there heads out of there asses. might delay my harness 3-4 days. I'm pissed >:(
also have a face lift in the kick's near future.
-
Looks good... You may want more clearance around the pipe for movement. ??? I think it may rattle a bit...
-Eric
-
I had a 1998 Audi A4 with S4 suspension and wheels. The ECU had been reprogrammed and the exhaust tweeked. Thing was a friggin blast to drive. It was a quatro car and stuck to the road like crazy. I miss that car. It had 180K miles when i sold it and was still tight as could be. It was getting to be a huge amount of preventitive maintenance so I sold it. It was amazing how good that car did for the miles.
That is a terrific engine you are using. Gobs of power and very dependable. I didnt see how many miles your donor car had. Just make sure you keep to the scheduled times for the timing belt.
Just for convo here is a pic of the audi.
-
Looks good... You may want more clearance around the pipe for movement. ??? I think it may rattle a bit...
-Eric
I am going to use a silicone sleeve and open the hole up some too.
wvscotsman-
Yep they are sweet engines and nice car you had there too. I am thinking about getting a wagon for parts running purposes. And my motor has 44k and I have two others with under 70k for back-up.And once I get the bugs worked out I will do a new timing belt with the mechanical tensioner conversion and pulleys and.....
-
I would love to have an S4 avant wagon. Sexiest damn station wagon i have ever seen.
We see the Audi sometimes and it just about kills me. Car was so unique. Not a day went by driving that car someone didnt stop me to talk about it.
I am happy with my sammi though. If a rock flies up and hits it i dont sweat it too much where with the Audi i would cry.
That thing is going to scream with that engine in it. Should really turn some heads as that engine has a pretty unique exhaust note.
-
Love the exhaust outlet....Tricky!
-
here we are again....
good shop day today. yesterday I spent all day getting a drive by cable throttle body to replace the drive by wire one the Audi TT roadster came with. I removed the ball-stud,drilled out a hole for the Suzuki barrel type throttle cable and machined other grooves/channels to route cable and barrel. then made a cable bracket and was done with that project. next I threw a Lil' bling to it in the way of a real BOV (blow-off-valve). then back to that damn exhaust.dinner tonight consisted of stainless dust and grinder sparks. but one more hanger and some way to silence the exhaust through bumper noise and I'm done.
also had to add a higher radiator fill neck. (it was for a 03 dakota) and tap a intake hose next to the turbo for my N75 boost controller valve.
paypal got my payment straightened out for my standalone and harness so hopefully it went in the mail today. ;D
-
Pretty crafty work on that throttle body adaptation. ;)
-
not alot of visual progress today. did put in the clear corner lights and LED's. and alot of unseen little odds and ends. I could drive this thing if I had the electronics.
-
wiring this weekend. :) stuff shipped out today (2 day air). next report.......running?......vid?........hummm..... ;D. I just hope it works out better than the diesel.
please.....please....
wish me luck fellers. and locals (or those that want to make a trip) are welcome.
-
Keep it up man!! Watching this with wishes and empty pockets. I have decided the most practical swap for me would be a 16V 1.6.
-
GOOD LUCK! ;D
-
Your attention to detail and finishing should pay off now, you won't have much that isn't done right the first time (something always sneaks in). The wiring looks like it should be Plug & Play, even though up under the dash isn't much fun. It is gong to be awesome, just getting in and going without pushing to get on the highway.
-
looks alot like smoke in that tail pipe...... ;)
-
Yeah? well what did you do, toss a cigarette butt up in there? >:D
-
I don't smoke cigarettes! ;)
WHAT have you been smoking? :-\
How does it sound?
Does it move by itself? Or, has it been so long it isn't licensed?
Glad to hear YOU see smoke!!
-
here ya go....
theres still a ton of wiring and tuning to do but it runs. ;D
Audi turbo 1.8t in Suzuki sidekick first start.-up. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgiOyj4HU74#)
this was before the calibration tune was even done. right out of the box.
I'm a broke man but a happy one! ;D this engine runs soooo good!
-
Awesome! you need to do this...
blow off valve duck call (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbNxugO-uf0#)
-
Shit that's funny! It's on a 1.8t also! I might have too. Turkey call maybe??
-
Now that is how a project should start up. I was beginning to wonder about you, with all the finish work and cleaning everything up, but that start-up video with wires all over and windshield have covered - that is a real start-up.
Way to go.
-
Very nice work. I like your attention to detail. That rear bumper is sick. Nice zuk.
-
Right on with the running vid man!
-Eric
-
road test day! ;D
drew came to help today (DREW4.0) and we got alot done really. we re-ran the standalone wiring harness and removed more of the factory Suzuki wiring. then routed wiring under hood in there prospective locations. some more finish work and prettying up and its time to wheel.(thanks Drew)
theres still a ton to learn about this computer and engine management system. but it will be a fun learning journey.
enough rambling.....
THIS THING KICKS ASS! ;D. with it as far out of tune as it is it still hauls butt! it has power out the rear! it sounds mean, BOV puffing, turbo spooling its sweet! its intoxicating! wow...... :)..........wow......... 8).....its still surreal....
wow....can it really be mine???......I almost don't want to go to sleep for fear of dreaming.......wow.
-
SWEET!
-
Welcome to the turbo club, you don't understand why I say do a turbo
until you have and drive one, it's the "WOW' factor, as you now know
These little trucks are a total blast to drive with the added power and
once you go turbo, it will never be the same without one
Nice job, looks great

After hundreds of hours of very meticulous detailed work... very well done, Jluck! The install looks better than professional. Good friends are good to have. Good friends with specialty skills are even "more better". I'm tickled she is running for ya.

argh...... >:(
PITA

What happened???
-
What happened???
don't know. I cant get it to tune. after 30+ hours trying I may have a bad TPS. I am going to get a new one right now.I did get it out for a road test last night, one mile of highway and one pullover! :police:
-
How are you tuning it? Do you have a wide band O2 sensor? About
the only way to get it close is to tune by EGT, and it needs to be one
that can read very quickly so you can catch lean and rich spots
Pulled over huh, going too fast or he just never saw a Track/Kick
go that fast on big rubber?
Tell me a little about your tuning software, what program etc.
Wild
-
I'm using a vems tune. With wideband o2. Pretty basic system I just need to get a propper tps. I think it will be fine.
-
Cool, you will get it OK with the wide band
-

How I didnt get a hundred tickets in the audi i had with that motor remains a mystery. So much spooling up that turbo and lettin her eat.
-
here's a couple pics of the tune program. just for fun.
-
I like the graphing feature in the second pic, could be very helpful.
I think something like that is available for MegaSquirt but I don't
think it was available in the original software

Keep plugging away at it and you'll get it right sooner or later Jluck. If it gets too frustrating, try taking a break from it for a couple days and let your mind clear.
-
When you get it right, dont forget to save your work. A friend of mine spent months dialing his in, then had an ECM failure. He couldnt find his data and had to start over.
-
Are you using a straight ODBC II reader? If so which software application are you running?
-
I'm using lugtronic standalone with a vems computer and software. So regular OBD doesn't appily.(that would make it too easy) :P

thanks for that dave. I will do!

I got it!
I found a coil pack that was bad on #4 cylinder. what a relief. I drove it down to see my brother tonight. (about 14 miles) and it did pretty good. it still needs tuned but at least now I can actually do it! :)
it feels like it will have a ton of power when tuned right! it will already loop out on my driveway with just a burp of the throttle. I will tune all day tomorrow and get some poser pics too.
I caught myself laughing out loud nonstop driving it today. it is already a hoot!

here's some poser pics of it somewhere other than the shop. then some camping prep.(back in the shop). and finally a day I have waited a long time for.........the decal.
-
did some trail preparations today. put in a pioneer CD deck (5 dollar garage sale special) and some Boston acoustic speakers in the front (wow)!,made some of my "special" cup holders. they have magnets epoxied to the bottom so you can put them anywhere you want or if you are working on the rig. they also work as can coozies and store in the OE cup holders to stay out of the way.
also added a GPS, mag-light over the driver door and started tidying up under the bonnet.

Those pictures make me want a 4-door. I kind of wish I did, because there's nothing worse than seeing a 4-point buck and trying to get 4 people bailing out of the 2 door Tracker. Yours looks awesome. Just the right height, track width, tire size, everything looks well-proportioned.
I especially like the transmission hump, you eliminated all the carpet and plastic stuff and it actually looks damn good, those cup holders are a great idea too. I have a couple old big speaker magnets that I may consider for something like that. Maybe you should patent your idea. Speaking of which...
mag-light over the driver door
Dammit. I knew I should have patented that :P

I found out that if you pull out those two gray plastic plugs, there are actually nuts welded in for the option of adding a handle there. I guess that would be for right-hand drive vehicles. Anyways, perfect fit for two M6x1.0 bolts, a little aluminum plate with the bolts countersunk into the rear of the plate. The nuts are on the front side of the brackets and have just the perfect clearance for the flashlights.
The reason for the radius on the top leading edge was because the roof started to curve in drastically there, and cutting it was easier than making it contour to the ceiling.
The only trick is...being 6'2" tall, that I need to watch my head. I only bumped my head once, needless to say, I learned quickly to duck my head.
-
I like your Lil plate idea more than what I done. that's very nice.(mental note....steal idea.)and yep I hear ya on the height thing. I'm 6'5" 265# so my whole life I've fought everything being too low or narrow......the top of my head looks like a dirt berm at a shooting range.

Clean looking mounts, nice work. I've since gone to LED flashlites, 1/4 the size and weight, 5 times the light, fit in the glove box or belt holder.
-
maybe the last post till I go wheeling and see if I can break this thing. (something in my peanut gallery is telling me the clutch will die).
I did get the engine bay looking better but still not good.,put in a bic holder, flash light mount pic, mocked up a 2way radio spot and a temporary place for a pistola.
thats about it, I cant wait to play with this rig.

last day of prep. leaving tomorrow at 4am.
did a few more things. got the topper on and loaded, put in a shelf for the dog and under storage, filled the wall and rear door with foam and put the covers back on,got a inverter. I think I'm ready.
I hope all goes well, with such a invasive conversion, so many potential problems. ah piss on it I'm going!

Those are LED MAGLites, they kick ass. Up until the day I bought those, I always had an old-school way of thinking that the tried-and-true incandescent bulbs were always best and they provided great range...that 2-D cell LED MAGLite proved me wrong. It has a brighter light that maintains brightness over a LONGER distance than a comparable MAGLite. I was impressed. I went back later that night and bought another one for my other truck. More compact than the 3-D maglite I used to carry around, and when Wal-Mart was closing them out for $29, I couldn't resist.
I hear ya though, I keep one of those compact LED torches in my hunting pack where space is an issue and I need to pack lightly.
For the ultimate compact light, look up Pak-Lite at http://www.9voltlight.com/ (http://www.9voltlight.com/)

So your going for a 4:1 next?

not sure yet. I can almost put together a ringr and toyota duals for the same cost. (then gear down one toy case later)...dunno, moneys all tied up right now... :(

Do the 4 2 1 tcase gears, $650 or so from TT and worth every penny!

I figured I better post before any search parties were deployed.....(or celebrations that i stopped using zukiworld :P).
I have just been enjoying my kick.(alot). after much tuning the mileage from the last tank was 19.7 ;D, up from 11. :-\. I now have put 1-1.5k on it since she was put on the road. I do love it and also have a list a mile long for needed changes and future "upgrades".
sneak peak of plans....(and pipe dreams.{atomic axles})

Be careful with the seat width. BRD HNTR is running a great set of seats in his, but they are a bit wide.
I like the dash. :)

god I hope they fit! I already have them. If memory serves me wright there is three sizes, (crack head, regular and fatass) I got the middle ones.
and I love those dashes too. I can remove all clunky gauges and pods and run everything through the standalone. that will be nice!

alrighty then.... the re-do items have begun........
the exhaust was obnoxious and driving me nuts....(maybe more nuts :P). so after a road trip to find a stainless replacement muffler (harder than you might think,3" In/out and both centered). I got more blank stares and "I can order it" answers than I care to recount.
AND BTW IT'S 2011 I CAN ORDER IT TOO!!!! PROBABLY FASTER AND CHEAPER!! argh!
I did find a MBRP resonator. impressive construction and said to cut db's by half. IT DOES!
IT SOUNDS GREAT NOW!!
then out back to that bumper, I haven't really liked the receiver hitch I first did so it got ditched and a scratch built one was employed and tucked up 3" and in 2 or 3". it really cleaned things up back there and I will still smooth the clunky ends. :)
NEXT, the spool has to go! it sucks. It pushes so hard and with the engine power I can easily lift a front tire wayyy of the ground when taking off to the right or left. :o (SIDEKICK65 can attest to it!)
-
Hey jared, you want to sell that little flowmaster?
Doh, nevermind. I just looked at your post closer and see that you are still using it. :P
-
??? NO wonder it sounded obnoxious with that 6 pack o beer size muffler! I originally tried a flowmaster (at least TWICE the size of that) simply for the ruggedness of construction being heavier gage steel and all. Made it down the road less than a mile before making a quick u turn back to the garage to rip that nasty thaing off. Hard to describe the sound, loud droning accompanied moments of much louder blatting  went right up the street to the local speed shop and picked up a decent but cheap turbo muffler, swapped and viola, nice. $32 with tax I think. Besides, quiet is appreciated by lots of living things. imo.
Only one drawback, now I can hear all the squeaks and rattles
-
Hey thanks again for delivering that muffler. I was surprised it was brand new! My daughter was home and said you were driving the kick, sorry i missed that

no problemo. yea I had thoughts of a startled teenager seeing some stranger in the yard and running out with a large can of grizzly bear strength pepper spray!..
and I have gotten crafty with making reasons to drive the kick.!
last tank 19.94 mpg BTW!!!! and that was not real Conservative driving! ;)
-
Kind of hard to drive conservatively with that power setting there, isn't it? Just punch it to see if the tires still break, or see if you can hold it out on a corner.
-
I rode in jluck's audikick last week.wow what a ride.the little thing has torque for sure.taking off from a dead stop you dont need a driver side tire. 8) the whole conversion is done with pride and is no hack job by far.im glad to see he is getting another muffler on it.it was loud in 5th gear.
-
Allright, now I wanna see some Wheelie shots! >:D

I finally got a chance to pull the rear bumper and get some paint on it. was running around with bare steel back there. I welded up the inside, smoothed the tacks and edges on the front side, gave it a glaze of autobody icing and sanded it smooth, then a few heavy coats of primer and it will be ready to sand and finish paint tomorrow.
and a cool rainbow (ring) around the sun. I saw this at the Florence Oregon dunes Friday.

we saw a really cool "sundog" at christmas valley, that was the first time I remember seeing one and Eric was on hand to tell us what it was, kinda cool!! Your bumper is awesome!!! I really need to get one built...
-
I have seen "sun devils" come straight out of the ocean before. WAY COOL! this was my first "sun dog".
well weather was good and one of the boys and a couple friends were bugging me to go wheeling,so after very little arm twisting....off we went.(bumper paint was drying anyway). after a couple hours of playing....KERPOW!...UH OH....
lets just say I regeared today.(and changed one axle). I went back to open diff for now.(thank god, spools out). I had 4.62's in the diffs when I put in the diesel and they just didn't work well with the Audi motor.
its SOOOO much better now with the 5.12's. :) I love it!!
got the bumper "hammerite" painted. (not too sure if I like it).
-
meh, the grey dont look right with that shade of red
-
What the hell happened to that gearset ??? Too bad, I was really looking to try a set of 4.62's in mine, I think they would be perfect gearing for mine.
-
I really like the rear bumper. It flows well with the body. I will agree though, not my favorite color but not my not favorite, if that makes any sense.
Sorry about the rear differential. I don't envy you at all with all of that axle twisting, pinion busting, ring gear chewing power. No envy at all. (read with scarcasm).
-

I don't know if the up hill 4 wheel drifts had anything to do with it but maybe?, I wouldn't let this discourage you wanting to run 4.62's bent, there stronger in theory than the 5.125's (larger pinion W/4.62). so we shall see how long these last.
meh, the grey don't look right with that shade of red
It does look better in person but still just not quite rite.
Allright, now I wanna see some Wheelie shots! >:D
just not gunna happen now :(....no more spool. will have to wait for the ARB.
I have been spending some time on spidertrax web site....hmmm...now to start making real $$$ again.... ;)
-
Paint the bumper body color 8)
-
That is a nice looking bumper, even that color. I used black Hammerite on mine, just enough silver in it to throw the black off-color.
I won't say anything about the gears, been trying to be mostly conservative with mine. The ARB will be very nice, it was an improvement from my locker, so coming from a spool you will really enjoy it. And you can still light up both sides! What size tires are you running?
-
I'm running 31" km2's, and i am going with open diff for a while too see if I can build a spider9.
-
Very nice lookin bumper. Meh on the color, its not that bad.

thanks for the compliments. it don't look that good at <10' though. but not bad for a shop job I guess. if I paint it it will be black.,maybe wrinkle finish or the ole standbye bedliner.

I have been doing allot of research and data calculations on this motor and it looks as I am getting about 50% power out of it at the moment. the only permissive I don't have control over is boost PSI value to the electric boost controller. so I am waiting for a flash to get the boost from the current 4psi to 14psi. I am excited, i will really tear out the rears now. ;D
currently the rig is a fun performer but not radical as it should be or as I hoped. I can currently pass on steep inclines and gain speed (slowly) in 4Th but I want more!!!!! >:D
so over the next couple weeks/months I will be focusing on getting the motor 100% happy and putting down 230HP on the dyno.(250 would be better) ;)
-
Don't know what you could do with 230 hp?? It rained a little yesterday and I couldn't speed up going on the freeway, it kept breaking loose up to 50 pph. Must have been oil on the road. With 230 hp, just thinking about it would probably break the tires loose.
-
Good thing there is no such thing as to much horse power!!! I can't imagine your rig with twice the hp, it's gonna be crazy!!!! Can I have another ride :0)
-

One of these days we should trade rigs for a trail. Then you can drive insted of ride ;)

It will be handy with the 37's and spider9's
-
I never dynod the Audi I had with the same motor. But according to a very well trusted and respected Audi guy in the area, with the mods and the flash it was some where in the 165 area. It was a blast to drive at that. I can not imagine 230 out of the same motor.
-
I started with a ATC engine code.(180 HP) standalone is supposed to add 40-50. and exhaust, fuel rail etc. I hope to have a solid 200 at the rear. I am adding 10 more LBS of boost soon and maybe water/meth.
and I don't know if its the four door's longer wheel base or what but my rig has more hook up than I know what to do with. It will break em loose but as its pinning you back.
-
after finding my throttle cable slipped due to a last minute ghetto attachment, I was only getting 1/2 throttle I figured its time to do something. I didn't have much room between the TB butterfly lever, the coolant pipe and sensor. after some thought I realised the mounting bolt pattern was symmetrical I could rotate the TB 90* and have plenty of realestate for a bracket and cable.
enough yammering....
-
I did it!!!!!......20.39 MPG!!!!!! and that was driving like normal (aggressive)!
and a sneak peak of the next project.
look closely at the bottom pic. someone tried welding steel to aluminum....
-
20 is impressive, the best I ever got was 23 stock and the 3 speed auto,
and after the turbo, gears and 33 Swampers I would average 15 on the highway

Just got back from VORRA race, and a swing through Yosemite. Running the Tracker through Yosemite at 6,000' - 10,000' elevation, it looks like I got 26+ mpg. Only going 45+ mph but was pulling from the valley floor to the top on both sides and at that elevation I still had LOTS of power.
I'll have to do another check, now that I am back at sea level. I started running a mileage App. on my phone.
-
26! I am seriously jealous.
-
26! I am seriously jealous.
Yes, I was amazed. It was conservative driving in National Park, less than 50 mph, but at high altitude. I will see how it does back at sea level.
-
BRD HNTR, shoulds gave me a ring. Yosemite is my backyard. Would have liked to see your rig

Yosemite, sounds great. Is there anywhere to wheel there, like rugged mountain trails or something like that?
-
The only place I know of is the Rubicon Trail, Yosemite
is a tourist trap kind of place and a National Park
-
BRD HNTR, shoulds gave me a ring. Yosemite is my backyard. Would have liked to see your rig
When my hunting partner decided not to meet me in Moab after the VORRA race, my wife said it was only another 140 miles to Yosemite. That was close enough, wanted to go there when I was rock climbing and never made it. Good thing I didn't, would probably still be hanging out there.
Never thought of checking to see who was local. Would have been great to get some wheeling in. I always like meeting with Zuke people. Try to get to Zukafari next year, we are going again. Met Wildgoody & his brother down there last year, hope to run some more trails with them next year.
-
mileage stories are like sexual conquest stories........... only believe it if your there (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sex017.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

Mileage, just like sex and money if a little is good more is better.
Just so you know I'm ecstatic if my boat gets over 3.5 miles per gallon. Most boats I work on get about 1 mpg.

Yes there is...
The only place I know of is the Rubicon Trail, Yosemite
is a tourist trap kind of place and a National Park
True, wild Yosemite is the tourist place but there are some decent trails around here too. The most popular trail is Bald Mountain trail, it's very easy and virtually everyone who has a 4x4 hits it. I haven't been on it yet. They have a "Moonlight Madness" nighttime run which just happened two weekends ago I think on the 15th or 16th.
There's Coyote Lake trailhead which takes you to several trailheads. The only trail I've hit was the Strawberry Lake trail, from what I've heard it's an "intermediate" skill level trail, and I did it in my 3" lifted Tracker with stock gears and 235s. I was slipping the clutch a lot but now I have the 4:1 and I can't wait to get back on that trail again.
There's Brewer/Swamp trail which is a little harder.
The best trail around here, so Ive heard, is the Dusy-Ershim trail. It is comparable to the Rubicon trail (so I've heard). It passes through a wilderness area so you are only allowed like 30 or 60 feet off the trail either on either side. It takes about 3 days to complete.
I'm drawing a blank on the rest, those are the first ones that come to mind though. Yosemite is off of CA-41, all of these trails are in the Shaver Lake-Huntington Lake area off CA-168. Generally within a short drive from Fresno to the local mountains though.
-
Dusy-Ershim trail sounds cool, I'd like to do a run like that sometime
-
well I figured out my electric boost controller was not working right so I changed it tonight..now getting 12-15 lbs of boost (insted of 4-5), it is insane! tons more power ;D
but......after only a couple minutes.....it started running rough/crappy. I hope its just software and not major motor issues because I want to drive this red rocket.
flat out crazy!!!
-
I don't know what the TT engine was designed to run at, but the one I drove
didn't seem to have a lot of boost, maybe 5 PSI is what I thought.
Hope the engine is OK, how does the cranking compression sound?
-
4-5 lbs is limp mode for vw/audi 1.8t's. normal for a 180 hp TT is about 14-15 and upwards of 20+ for the 225 hp model. I am still in a plenty safe range so I am really hoping on just a software issue or maybe another blown coil pack. I will check it out today.
-
I got it! It blew #3 coil pack. But now I'm stuck at work and can't go drive it! Damn! Its killing me! 8)
-
I hope your engine is OK, but you know how it is with a turbo engine, there
is never enough power, well let me rephrase that, we get greedy ;)
BTW a 1.8L at only 180 HP is not being boosted to 10 or 12 PSI, the N/A
engine should be rated at a little over 100 HP and 10 PSI should about
double that output, mind you I have not looked up any of the specifics on
the Audi engine, I'm just making a general statement about the VW 1.8 GTI
engine, of which I had in an '86 Audi 4000 and what I have learned about
turbocharging in the last 8 or 10 years
-
the 20 valve 1.8T a wonderful thing.
mine is the ATC engine code. here's some good "in a nut shell" info
http://audittmk1.blogspot.com/2009/01/tt-engine-info.html (http://audittmk1.blogspot.com/2009/01/tt-engine-info.html)
why wouldn't the engine be OK anyway? I don't think a bad coil pack will ruin a engine.
-
Dusy-Ershim trail sounds cool, I'd like to do a run like that sometime
Some club members went on that trail last year. There are a lot of pictures over at https://picasaweb.google.com/105298426119042245963/Dusy
Jluck: When does the new coil pack arrive?
-
new coil packs and plugs should be here tonight......will report.... :)
-
WOW....I guess is all I can really say. its unbelievable! I didn't get a whole lot of seat time tonight and I went to square one as far as a tune so it has a long way to perfection but its nuts. crazy fast. it has that pin back feel now that forces your last meal up into your nasal cavity. I am getting it dyno'd the 20Th and having a master tuner check my work and undoubtedly fix things. oh I can feel the tickets coming. :police:
-
well.. not going to make dyno day, I have been fighting a high idle due to a vacuum leak that I resolved today. its running good but a propper tuning is in order now.
this weekend I will be putting in the front bilsteins and 5.12 front.
OUCH!!!! I ordered bilstein(S) only to realise I only ordered one. WHAT THE $#!% 300 bucks each! GASP!...CHOKE!....PUKE!......
now waiting on second....
BTW ordered first one from Allshocks. co..../turner motorsports. emailed to ask if I screwed up or them (the one strut thing)(the web site was misleading IMO). Kevin foote was a total jerk!
got second one coming from local autozone for 107.00 cheaper! ;D
will photo update soon....
-
Autozone is the way to go. I found the same thing and got a lifetime warranty.
-
finally got a couple hours to work on the kick tonight!
look at my fat shaft!
those billy's are impressive. and boy do they make a huge difference! and not the kind of "I think it's better" difference but it now drives like a new car! I was Leary about spending 500 bones on struts but I honestly feel its worth every penny!
and one point for autozone, they gave me 100% refund on the junk Gabriel's no questions asked and sold me one bilstein for over 100 bux cheaper than the gangsters at allshock.com
also got the 4.62's out and 5.125's in, looks like in the nick of time! look at that front housing.
-
Your still not strapping that front diff down? Are you swapping to a steel one?
-
Your still not strapping that front diff down? Are you swapping to a steel one?
Looks like a new (or very clean) aluminum one in there now.
With the extra power installed the front diff mount DOES get a lot more strain. I have stripped out the back mounting bolt in Moab, and just broke the rear mount when pulling the Race car out 10 miles. I now have a stronger mount, and will put two mounting points on if it breaks again.

Your still not strapping that front diff down? Are you swapping to a steel one?
I know...I know... :-[. I just didn't have the brace when I did the swap nor have had the time to fab anything.
-
Keep the bolts tight, they most commonly break when reversing
from the upwards motion, unless you put a collar on it

:o Come on man, with everything you've fabbed already, a diff brace should be a no brainer. Took me about an hour and a half to make mine, and it bolts to both sides.

I was lucky to have the 3 hours to spend on it that I did. Life has been hell latley..... :-\. I will put it on the list with the corbeaus. ;)

It's nice to have 4 wheel drive again! and actually use it a bit. also tested out the billy's off road and love them more!
here's a couple pics of the kick on the new access road I built to get to my next home build project. This is where my dream home will be going, over looking the river with utter silence and serenity.

Very cool!
Is that mini-excavator yours?

oh I wish....but its in the "someday" plan.

When are you adding the rocks to the driveway? The 2-4' ones to help manage run-off. :D

that actually might happen! this land might be turned in to a family play retreat.

uh oh.....hit page two it must be time to work on the Audikick! Honkey2.0 came down to finish his 4door 2.0 conversion (more too come I reckon). so I figured if I was busy on my own project he wouldn't bother me for help. :P
anyways here's the latest.
BTW I have almost 8K miles on the Audikick and its kicking a$$. I am getting 18.5-21.5 mpg, can pull 80 in 3rd,90 in 4Th and haven't really gone much faster than that in 5Th (maybe just over 100),but then it feels like a 2,000 dollar rig with a 10,000 dollar motor.

I like the use of an angle finder on the original seat to get an appropriate 'angle of the dangle'.

-
That is a sweet package you have put together! Do you still have parts for a '94 kick? I need an ignition switch and heater fan switch, and of course.....maybe a ride? Lol!!

it helps. I wanted the seats just a bit higher than stock and they ended up being 2cm higher witch feels like alot more than that. I may lower them 1cm yet.

thanks, I am getting it closer to what I want slow but sure. I have a heater switch but no good Ign./combo switches. I did find a hole in the wall wrecking yard with a bunch of samurai/kick stuff though. I will be going back to pilfer soon.
-
Jluck,
I will have to come get that if you want to part with it!
Nice score on the wrecking yard, I never seem to find places like that.

Did YOU put in that "Silt Fence" ?!! Looks GOOD for show, but you are really suppose to bury the bottom edge in the soil.
A Ditch Witch makes it easier. (Available at any Rent a Center) Also be careful with that mini excavator on grades, bad things happen fast. (Pic and end of post)
Glad your are getting to build your New Place !! I build my Shop First; 32 x 88; half w/ floor heat. Started 2002, finished---finished 2004 as I did the Pay as You Go Plan. Did all the work my self except the original excavation. ( I did try to route a
CAT 345 from work passed my place for a weekend. Couldn't wait any longer I had to beat the frost in Nov. 2002)
Next I plan to remodel the House after a couple more pipeline jobs. (Again Pay as You Go Plan), but this time I will hire it out!
I don't think I can sleep in my shop on army cots for 2 years !!
Oh Oh nice work on your Audi Project, I have been look'n in every now & again to see how it's been coming along.

Yea I did put in the silt fence and we rocked the bottom edges anywhere there was a chance of dirt getting to it.and yea its also to keep lookie loos happy.also I have learned the limits of equipment over the years and am pretty cautious these days.although rental shop equipment sure is.easy to push past the limits. ;)
This project might get put off for a while,It's hard to justify new construction in a poor economic market and I won't be borrowing money to build.so I have to work within the budget that's constantly looking more bleak.time to look at short sales and forclosures.my brother's a contractor also which hopefully will lead to a joint venture family retreat cabin.
-
well I had a coolant leak from the lower coolant hose that I have never really liked anyway so I figured I would build stainless coolant lines.(upper and lower). I never liked the ugly upper hose so I figured I would re-do it too with a 1/4" npt air bleed insted of the 2ND cap set up that I had. anyway.....
-
Looks good. We did a similar thing with Project Trouble to run the cooling lines up to the radiator.
-
just went through the WHOLE thread. VERY NICE WORK! Really like the rear bumper and wish i had your skills to do my own.
When do you want to trade kicks? ;D

I don't expect most of you to get the move, lets just say I may have vehicular A.D.D. a tad bit....I still have the XL-7 too so if I get a wild hair I could be posting back on here someday. :)
-
Figure I better post up. I got a new clutch put in. Been wokin out some bugs lately. Other than that I love it. I will keep the thread up to date. Merry x-mas all. Laters. -KB-
-
Got a chance to work on the kick today. Fuel pump went out and I had to install the new one in the driveway. Found my long time enemy the coolant leak. Ended up being a cracked radiator. Weird... This is a new unit but sure enough it was cracked. Pulling it out to get fixed soon. Gonna start collecting suspension parts soon.... -KB-
-
Where did it crack at?
-
Filler neck under the cap. Its a bummer but my radiator guy says he can fix easy. -KB-
-
Hey Tire Man,
I'm glad you got to buy the turbo kick from Jluck, that is a really cool kick and I'm sure a whole lot of fun. Are you close by or out of the area? I would like to see it sometime. I never got to see it when Jluck had it. It sounds like an easy fix for the radiator and back to burnouts!
Kj
-
KJ,
I am in Salem Or. You should stop by if you can sometime. Where are you at? -KB-
-
Sorry I haven't responded to your post! Brain isn't working too well these days. I live in Monmouth, I go to Salem quite a bit though.
I blew my back out again(above the fusion) so I'm not even able to drive but I hope to come check it out soon! I hope the bugs are worked out and you are having fun with it. Do you know the guy just east of center street on Hawthorne, he has a few trackers. One is up in the air! Take it easy,
Kj
-
The guy on Center is Locjaw, and Tireman no longer owns the Audikick.
-
Who owns the Audi kick now, anyone know?
Thanks
-
Bigzook dose
-
Yeah, I picked it up. Will start a new build thread on it as soon as I start working on it.
-
:)
-
This has to be the longest build thread ever. Is this thing ever gonna be finished? ???
-
You do realize I started a new thread on it some time ago right?

:-[ Oops, forgot. My bad.
-
OMG I'm glad I found this thread! I'm looking at doing a 1.8t conversion as well.
-
I think the mechanics are pretty simple. Specially since ACME adapters for Diesel VW swaps exist... Reach out to Bigzook for more information... He's the current owner of this vehicle and has driven it for many years.
good luck, and post pics! Maybe start your own build thread?
