Title: Need suspension help after doing 4.3 swap on 88 tin top
Post by: zukedupShoe on September 28, 2010, 01:34:06 PM
I recently bought my first sami and after the 1.3 finally took a shit i decided its tme for more power. After dropping the 4.3 vortec in I now have a squat on all 4 leaf springs,it already has a SPOA lift With BDS shocks. Im not lookin to spend a small fortune on suspension components. Do I put helper Leafs in or is there a coil add in kit for my shocks? This is my first 4 wheel drive build. Any suggestions any1?

If you give Hawk Suzuki a call they can send you a couple of extra #2 and #3 springs.  That should help even the rig out without destroying the ride.

Find a used set of sammy springs and make a custom leaf pack.  Use a torch to heat and bend the old retainers straight so you can get the leaves apart.  Use a grade 8 or 10 cap bolt to make a new center pin out of (you may need to drill the spring perch out a bit to fit the head of the cap bolt).  When you put your leaf pack back together, spray paint them with dry graphite lube.  Also, leave the spring retainers bent out straight, but drill a hole in the ends of them and put a cross pin through them.  this way, your leaves will still stay together, but you get some extra droop because they arent banded together tightly.  If you want to make the additional leaves shorter so they stagger in the pack, diamond cut the ends. this way they will still travel over each other smoothly without the teflon pad thats usually on the ends.

Not the same length, but CJ front springs are the same width.  You could probably snag one of those and build a custom spring pack.
