Title: details on installing an electric fan in an 87 samurai
Post by: airmanwilliams on August 18, 2010, 06:57:30 PM
I am wanting to put an electric fan in my 87 samurai soon and wondered if anyone can give me any details on installation please and what I need to get?

There's a 12 inch fan on eBay for around $30.  You basically have to measure the radiator to find what will fit.  LRO has one for around $80 I think.  I'm going to do the same thing shortly.

i hooked mine up through a toggle switch and then just grounded the fan to the radiator support. has worked great for a year just make sure you mount it very well. not zip ties like i tried lost my first fan in the woods somewhere. they do sell all sorts of kits to make the fan sense the temp in the radiator but i like the toggle switch. i have my electric fuel pump hooked up to the same toggle so i don't get to far before i realize i forgot to turn the fan on.

I just did the whole diesel conversion ...

Make sure to run the fan from a relay ! "switch" the relay will take the load not a toggle switch. Im with others hard wire that POS in and give yourself the control when your rig starts to run hot.

Fan + Relay + on/off Switch = happy !

i agree with the relay too. i had to put a beast of a toggle switch in to get it to handle it but I'm stubborn like that

I pulled a fan from a dodge carravan at the wrecker for $10, used a couple of pieces of aluminum angle iron to fit behind the rad and it was easy, peasy. Relay yes, definitly a toggle switch, just so if you go through deep water you can shut the fan off as not to throw water all over the electrical, dizzy and so forth. Also the deep water will cool the rad as you cross that swollen river.

Electricity is non-specific---go to the junk yard with your measurements and find the cheapest fan (and shroud if possible). Decide if you want to make it a pusher or puller; push in front of radiator and pullers are on engine side of rad. I like the switch theory but you should seriously place a thermostat override in it like a previous recommendation---in case you forget. Make sure that you have a decent relay or fuse consistent with the the amps/voltage and the toggle. Are you running hot; is that the reason for the electric fan?

the reason for the change is just to get more horse since I have a hard time getting over 55 mph right now. Im hoping soon to also have a 2" exhaust put on from my cat back for alittle more help too.

I used a fan off a honda civic the shroud almost fit just right.  used a sensor switch off some dodge k car for turning it on and off.  tapped the intake water port to install the sensor.

I have been planning to do this conversion for a while now but I was thinking of running a 3 way switch with "off" in the center a "temp sensor" on one side and "constant on" on the other side of the switch a relay would be good idea too. If I can ever get a stable job again and get my bills caught up I will actually get it done lol.
