need help, have an 1988.5 sammy first i had this problem with 1 st gear while driving needed to come to a complet stop to put it in first gear with the clutch in don't know if this is normal on sammy's and then i started having problems with revers gets really hard to put it in revers other then that the rest of the gears are fine. is this a common problem on sammy's.
-
did you go throug any water lately my reverse is always hard to use after i get water in the transmission
-
first gear seems to do that on my 87 too. I think its a sammy thing. REALLY annoying to me.
-
I dont have any problems with reverse but going into first sometimes doesnt want to go in unless its a complete stop.
I also have any 87 Sammi.
-
isnt it like uber annoying with that 1st gear thing? I HATE having to stop completely to get it in gear without forcing it and grinding gears.
-
Second gear is a step when rolling thru stop signs ect
-
Is your shifter sloppy as well? Lots of movement?
-
mine WAS until I replaced the shifter bolt, and the bushing, which helped, but I STILL have to be at full stop to get it in first gear.
-
was thinking that maybe i had to adjust the clutch cable never had a problem with the slooopy shift sindrom also never drove on water just sand.
-
Adjust the clutch, if that doesn't do it you may need new syncro's in the transmission. They are pretty easy to rebuild though, it can be done in a garage with the right tools.
-
I kinda want to rebuild my transmission sometime soon. just need o get the tools and parts, oh and money.
-
so it is basic stuff as for as puttinthe new syncro's where wuld i find those ,ocal auto part store maybe and what would be the right tools be going to adjust the clutch but don't really know what is a good adustmenton that. where would i find the bolt to check the transmision fluid and if in need what kind recomended.

Every samurai I own and have ever owned shifted the same way.....most of the time I have to come to a complete stop, but on rare occasion it will slip into 1st just before I come to a complete stop.
I've never had problems with it shifting into reverse though. Sounds like that could be a clutch, cable, or adjustment problem. Or it could be that the tranny bearings and synchros need replaced.
When I rebuild my trackick tranny, I ordered a rebuild kit off of ebay....just make sure you get one that uses either USA or Japan made bearings......no chinese, mexican, etc. bearings.
-
I've had several transmissions that don't like going into reverse without jumping into 4th first. It is usually either syncro or bearing related.
You can order transmission rebuild kits from most of the Suzuki Retailers that sponsor the board. Or you can just get a rebuilt transmission for around 350 plus shipping.

If you are trying to shift from 5th, straight into reverse (while stopped, of course), then you can't. There is a reverse lockout that prevents that. All you have to do is shift from 5th, into neutral, then let the shifter go into the center position (this "unlocks" the lockout), then you can move the shifter back over and into reverse.
I'm assuming this isn't the problem, but I'm just throwing it out there, just in case.

I have the same issue.. It really bugged me so I decided to put some Lucas "stop slip" stuff in there because its supposed to make shifting easier and it made the problem much worse. dont do it, stick with standard 75W-90
