Title: wiring.....
Post by: jow003 on May 06, 2010, 05:59:29 AM
In the past week my 87 Samurai all the sudden wouldnt start, turn over, or even click.  my first thought is that its a prob with the wiring, does anyone know a company that sells a wiring harness or doe anyone have any suggestions as to something else it might be?  The battery is basically brand new.

Make sure to clean the battery clamps well, bright is good, and
get a battery terminal brush and some spray cleaner too.

Other than that, you can check the big fuses close to the battery
and the fuses under the dash. Also check the body ground, that's
the small wire from the neg terminal on the battery cable

Good Luck

Just so that you know - wiring harnesses generally don't just fail - in fact the chances of your new battery failing are actually higher than the harness failing, so do the basic troubleshooting first.

Turn the headlights on - are they bright?  Have someone try to crank the engine whilst you watch the lights, they should not dim significantly or go out when you crank, those are signs of a failed or flat battery, or a poor connection.

a battery cable being dead is also a solid possibility if you have ZERO power of any sort.   I owned an old ford like that once, and thats what I had to do was change a cable from the negative terminal to engine.

Good call Bob, I had not considered the acid could have
eaten all the way through the cable causing no power.

so over the weekend i got to work on it.... as it turns out my brother who said it was the wiring doesnt know as much as he thought, it was the alternator i put in it a few years that went bad which absolutely and completely drained the battery so after spending a small fortune (atleast for me) getting new alt/batt it runs just as it did, now my only problem is gettin the carb tweaked from 10 feet in elevation to 6700.  any ideas?
