Title: Help with Intermittent engine power loss
Post by: sclarkfam on January 06, 2010, 05:47:45 PM
1990 Tracker with stock engine, free flowing intake and exhaust.  Occasionally will lose engine power.  On a typical hill that I drive 65mph, will only pull at 45mph.  Engine still runs smooth, just with less power.  The problem is unpredictable.  Timing is correct, new plugs, new fuel filter, gas purchased from same vendor for over a year, daily driver.  Noticed my gas mileage dropped from the usual 20mph to 15 mph on the last two tank fills. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

if it did it all the time it is a head gasket, but if it is occasionally it is probably a sensor

Failing fuel pump? Tap into and watch a fuel pressure gauge and see if the
pressure drops when the power is down

15 mpg? Man I thought mine was a fuel sucker at 22mpg. What kind of lift and tires you got on that rig anyway?

Based on jawman's contention, have you done a compression test?
