How much does your typical sammy weigh?
and what size winch is safe?
-
Stock they are around 1900 pounds. The SJ-410 comes in at 1830 according to the paperwork.
Generally you want a winch that can support %150 of your vehicle weight, so you can get away with a pretty small winch. However the 8000lb winches are not much more and in many cases less cost then the 6000 pound winches. So most people just go with the 8000lb Harbor Freight style winches or Mile Marker if they are looking for a good affordable winch. They work great, just a little slow.

how safe are the harbor freight ones and how reliable?

The mechanicals are fine, it's the attachments like the control that are
cheep plastic that sometimes breaks

I've been happy with mine. If it isn't something you are going to be pulling every trip out I would pick one up. Then take some of the money you saves and pick up a wireless winch control from Roadless Gear.
