Title: Gas Tank Help!!!!
Post by: freeriders98 on March 13, 2009, 08:22:43 PM
So I just bought an 87 Samurai, and the MPG have sucked. 20MPG first tank 13MOG second tank. When I bought it, it had a new fuel filter sitting in the glove box. So I figured it was probably due for one. So I pulled it off, and when I did brown gas came out of it. >:( So I cut the old filter open to see what was going on. Lots of rust inside the filter housing. (I am assuming it is rust, but possibly dirt couldn't really tell) So I need the cheapest way possible to fix this, as I am on a very tight budget. :'( Should I drop the tank clean it and line it with tank sealer stuff. Or buy a new tank? Anyone ever use the tank sealer stuff? If so how do you do it? I read on here and an article by 4wheeler that petroworks has a Polyethylene plastic tank. I looked on their website and can't find it, anyone know anywhere else to get a tank? Also are all my fuel lines going to be plugged as well? Sorry this is so long, but please I need some help.

start running gas thru it.
be prepared to replace the filter.
see how it goes.
i've had a lot of old cars(some had set for years) and never replaced a tank.
good luck.

yeah I changed the filter on it. So I think I am going to just keep an eye on it and see how it does. No rust should be able to make it to the engine right? (If filter is working properly)

yea. that's the way i'd approach it first!
but then i'm basically lazy- - -
i'm sure there comes a time when a gas tank goes bad, but i've never run into it.

Yeah I run a bit on the lazy side, but more than anything I fall into the no money category. So I'll just rock it till it blows up and I'll swap for the 1.6
