Discussion thread for article at: http://www.zukiworld.com/month_030108/feature_project-godzuki-resurrection.htm
Cookeville, TN - Fondest Memories and New Beginnings - Over the past 13 years, I have enjoyed my favorite hobby in the same trusty vehicle, my 1989 Suzuki Sidekick. She was nicknamed ‘Godzuki’ by my fellow club members, not for its size, but for its surprising abilities. rom the beginning, when I purchased her in 1994, she surprised me and those around me with an amazing ability to conquer trails that seemed impossible for a rig that size and incredible dependability both on and off the road. For 13 years and over 300,000 miles, she NEVER left me stranded. Even though there were many times that I beat her beyond her limits, and had to limp her home, she always got me to my destination.

That's right folks. Zig's ride is getting a makeover and we'd like your help in deciding some stuff....

Well, the article said you had a basic idea worked out. So what do we have to work with? :)

Well, the article said you had a basic idea worked out. So what do we have to work with? :)
Right now we are looking at a V-6 Grand Vitara base w/ lockers, axles, gears, etc.. off of the Kick, and turning it into a light weight, powerfull trail rig. Outside of that it is a plan in the making.
Last year I was inspired by riding in Mikes and Blake's rigs in Moab. I loved both of their rides in their own way. Mikes uncompromising trail conquering rig with bullet proof drive line and huge tires, and Blake's fast, low sporty desert blaster that was hanging in there with the bigger rigs on most every obstacle he attacked, and still running mostly stock Sidekick and Samurai parts.
I am thinking a compromise between the two.
Right now the big decisions to be made is how extreme do we go, what to keep off the kick and what to replace, IFS or SAS, tube or frame build, how big of tire, what tires and rims, what seats, etc.... I want a comfortable, fast dependable trail rig that can conquer most everything I try and still be dependable enough that I know I wont regularly break stuff.
Still a lot of questions to answer to get to a final product.

I liked the kit that swapped in a Ford 9" front end... Kept the IFS but made it strong enough for whatever tires you wanted to run.
Do you want to keep a two door convertible or can we convince you to cut up a 4 door and give it an open back/truck like setup. :)

Slightly different scale of course. :D

Definitely will be an 'Open Air' Style. I would not want to do the 4 door body due to the weight. The one common link in Mike and Blake's rig's, was they were both VERY light weight. I am shooting for as light weight as possible so a 4 door so out of the question. Plus, I like the open air feel.

Supercharge the big block. I'd use a 2.7 with 2.5 injectors. Previa supercharger. That way, you can just snap stuff nice and clean. ;)
Really, why the 2.5 over the 2.7? Got a line on a 2.5?

A direct, all stock, bolt together: 2.5L, Auto Tranny and Kick 4:1 T-case. If something goes, no looking for replacements for custom parts. Shooting for a very light weight rig, I don't think the extra HP of the 2.7 will be needed. I was amazed at how fast and powerfull Blake's Rig felt with a 16v 1.6, just due to the extreme weight reduction (plus I think he had it built a little, but I could not get any of his secrets) and I hoping to be as light or lighter than his set up.
Are there any easy HP increases for the 2.5? Chips, Headers, exhaust, injectors, etc??? You know, Just in case ;)

BTW: Blake's rig is an 8-valve just like your old ride, Zig! :) The 2.5 with a good intake and exhaust will be plenty of power for a less than 2000 pound rig.

I think the 2.5 is a good chose. Is your's gona be nice and low with big rubbers Kinda like this ;D

That is a nicely stretched out Sammy. :)
Sticking with the stock parts idea, what about sliding the axles apart in order to fit the larger tires without cutting into the firewall portion of the vehicle? We are going for 33" tires right?
Slide the rear back about 4" with a 4 link, so you can stuff the tires up without rubbing on the front of the fender well. In the front, forward 4" or so as well?
As for the fenders, we want to keep the tires covered so it remains a daily driver capable rig. Do we want to go with tube fenders, plastic or custom metal? If metal is ok, you could use a crazy idea my Dad and I came up for his Tracker that may or may not be implemented. :)
-
Zig, 3 seaters are HOT!!!
That's my input....
-
If I had the cash, this is what I'd do (assuming we want to stick with IFS here):
2.0L 4-banger
4" Zukination lift, then a 2 or 3" body lift
33" tires, as skinny as possible, on CJ rims
chromo rear axleshafts, some sort of locker
up front I'd go with the Hagan widening mod, Toyota CV's and the V6 Vitara steel diff
2WD Kick tranny backed by a Sammy t-case with 4:1 gears (high range reduction for on-road performance)
Sliders, aluminum skids and bumpers
Snorkel (just in case), 2" exhaust
-
RHodge,
Actually, Yea. I love the look of the newer competition rock buggies(wide, low and big tires). I will see if I can find a pic I sent to Liberty Overland with a comment " like this but a GV look. I will see if I can find in and post it later today.
Element,
I can rarely find someone to ride with me on local trips, what do I need a third seat? I'm thinking 2 seater till I find someone to regularly put up with me the maybe expand if needed ;)
Olija,
My current set up has most of these:
2.0L 4-banger ( 1.6 L)
4" Zukination lift, then a 2 or 3" body lift (3" body 3" suspension)
33" tires, as skinny as possible, on CJ rims (33x12.50 MTR's)
chromo rear axleshafts, some sort of locker (Currie Ford 9" w/ upgraded axles)
up front I'd go with the Hagan widening mod, Toyota CV's and the V6 Vitara steel diff (Hagen widened with Maxima shafts, Calmini Anvil V/ XL-7 housing)
2WD Kick tranny backed by a Sammy t-case with 4:1 gears (high range reduction for on-road performance) ( 4;! Kick T-Case and 5.83 axle gears to compensate for high range)
Sliders, aluminum skids and bumpers (Got it but all steel)
Snorkel (just in case), (2" exhaust Header and exhaust but no snorkel)
I like your taste ;D
Originally I was thinking of just upgrading what I have with weight reduction and increased power, but after last year in Moab, I want more. That is why I am torn on exactly what to do.

I like what England's own Dave Jones was doing to his 3rd Generation Vitara. The approach and departure as high as possible.
I would like to also add is to cut and raise the center and rear portion of the frame and associated driveline when you do a body lift. Let the front frame horn separate from the body with the lift spacer. What this does is give you belly clearance and higher departure (gas tank clearance), but yet keep the integrity of the frame with the front suspension. MH basically does it with the front frame stretch and lowering it the 6-8".
I'd also suggest that you add a doubler (stock tcase with a D300) with the dual shifters, maybe even some cutting brake hand controllers.
-

Ooops. Beware the wrath of the Welsh devils ;D ;D

I love tha bobbed of tail of the GV, and great idea onteh cutting brakes. How difficult is it to set up cutting brakes? would it be as simple as running seperate e brake cables to each of the rear wheels?

It depends on the style of braking you choose. You could look at using a rear tcase output disconnect and hand brake cables to lock both rear tires, you could look at using individual parking brake cables with the rear disconnect, you could look at using an output disc brake on the tcase to limit its output to the rear, or like most competition cutting brakes are arms that you push and hold/lock down after you using the brake pedal. You run the hydraulic brake lines (separated before the arms) to the arms and then to the rear brakes. By locking down one tire, you can still use a full time locker in the rear axle. What you are basically doing is limiting/minimizing any input of that tire and this makes the vehicle swivel around on it. Many users have a shift gate which locks and hold the arm secure till they want to change because you are using only 2 hands on a lot of gear shift levers, brake controllers, steering wheel, etc.

I didn't like the look of these at first, but they're really starting to grow on me. I've been thinking myself that I want to start one of these in 4 or 5 years, when they come down in price a bit.
I'd build it to fit 35's, move the rear axle back a couple inches, same with the front.

jagular7,
That sounds like WAY to much work for cutting brakes (and really expensive too :-\ ) I'll probably stay with standard brakes.

OK, Mikey has thrown me for a loop. After seeing the rear articulation pictures of the Rockstar V 3.0, I am seriously thinking Coilovers for the project....
What kind of issues will I run into with the stock Kick T-Case with articulation like this? Will I need to do a slip yolk eliminator? CV Driveshafts? Any thing else I am not seeing?

Just say Fawk the stock case and get one of these.

Is someone trying to get their hands on a used Sidekick 4:1 :-\ ;). Not gonna happen on this build ;)
I would rather spend the money on parts I need instead of want to complete the project. Already having a 4:1 and a V-6+Tranny that will bolt streight up to it, I really dont need a T-Case. Plus with the Auto, 4:1 and 5.83's, I dont think I will have gearing options. Plus, if the stock T-Cases can hold up to Hagens set up and driving, I think it wil hold up to mine.

I considered building the X before I sold it to you, but it was in to good of shape to start hacking up, plus the first time you flopped it over, you will waste a lot of hard to find parts and probably wont be able to replace it.

I talked to tt the other day and they said that their prototype gear reduction is due in soon for the tracker/sidekick. It will set after the trans before the t case and is 3" wide this will also reduce high range
and will sell for about 800.00 with the 4 to1 gear it should reduce low to about 6 to 1.
this would help as a dd using a stock gear.
-
It's not selectable though right?

Thanks for the info! I believe that I will be geared low enough with the 4:1, 5.83's and an auto tranny, but if looks like a need for more gear, I will definately look into this.

That is a nicely stretched out Sammy. :)
Sticking with the stock parts idea, what about sliding the axles apart in order to fit the larger tires without cutting into the firewall portion of the vehicle? We are going for 33" tires right?
Definately will be lookign at a longer wheelbase to accomidate bigger tires, but we are thinking at least 37's for the new rig
Slide the rear back about 4" with a 4 link, so you can stuff the tires up without rubbing on the front of the fender well. In the front, forward 4" or so as well?
Definately like the 4 link rear idea moved back for clearance
As for the fenders, we want to keep the tires covered so it remains a daily driver capable rig I'm going to try and tag it after the build as the old Kick, they are not real tight on built rides in the area. Do we want to go with tube fendersI'm thinking Tube, plastic or custom metal? ?? If metal is ok, you could use a crazy idea my Dad and I came up for his Tracker that may or may not be implemented. :) Please lket me or Eric know what you came up with, definately would be interested in seeing if it could be workid into the design
-
We ended up not using it, but we were looking at cutting the sheet metal off of a Toyota and grafting it onto the Tracker fenders. That way we could use the really big arches and cover the larger tires. :D
-
Cool Idea. I want my to look as much Suzuki as possible. If you look at Mike's or Blakes rig you think Suzuki. No matter how extreme they are built. I want the same thing. If I go all out tube with suzuki skins, I want people to look at it and think "damn, look what they did with that Suzuki"
I hoping if we go the tube and skins route we can just place the fender locations out of the way of the tires with the placement of the tubing and still use Suzuki skins.
Have you looked on line at the Toy truck pre-runner skins? If you are going to do it, check those out. they look great , have much more wheel well clearance and match uo to stock mounts.
Zig
-
That is what we were looking at. But we wanted to loose all of the straight part of the fenders and cut out as much of the flare as we needed/wanted. Instead we are looking at modding up some YJ flares.
How far forward are you looking to bring the front arch of the wheel well? Are you going to bring it right up to the headlights so you can keep the front grill stock, or are you going to switch to low profile headlights out of a Chevy Pickup so you can have more clearance for the front tires?
As for the rear, are you going to completely cut out the back end?
_________ ________

Not positive yet. I am sure I want the rear (body) dovetailed and possibly the front too. I do like the idea of keeping stock grill and headlights, even if the grill has to be cut back to fit.
Zig

So after a lot of brain storming, changing of minds and LOTS of research the build has begun 8) The good part is my trusty old steed is now a pile of parts on a skid ready to use on the new rig and sale what is not needed :'( The good part is that most everything is lined up and the build is on.
I decided on doing a street legal ride after much debate on doing a buggy. So the vehicle of choice is a blue Tracker 2 door ( had to have that open air feeling) with the following mods:
- Grand Vitara V6 and auto trans
- GRP Auto 4:1 tcase with Stans twin stick
- Trail Tough 'Trail Slayer' solid axle conversion
- Toyota axles locked and loaded
- Allied 17x9 rims with Staun Beadlocks
- Mickey Thompson 37x12.50 MTZ's
- Pre-runner bumpers front and rear
- full cage w seats and harness
and a few more goodies that I am sure I am leaving out.
I finally decided on the street legal ride after many things, but the deciding factor was how much I have always loved being able to jump in my Kick and drive any where, wheel the crap out of it and head back home. So if all works out I plan on making the maiden voyage of the new ride a Zukiworld even in the North West followed by a 2500 mile cross country trip in her to prove her road worthiness ;D
More updates to come,

- Mickey Thompson 37x12.50 MTZ's
Any reason for the Mics?
While not a radial, you should check out Pit Bull Rockers or Growlers. I've got set of Rockers and they are friggin' da bomb. Stick like you wouldn't believe. Yank Bob and I have keep the tires at street pressure (20#) and are trying to find the limit of the tire. Even at that pressure, they are conforming and sticking with amazement, to the point Bob is gonna off his new Yokos for them.
I could post some vid clips of the Rockers on stuff at Fossil Rok Ranch just to show you what these do at 20#s. I've dropped them to 10#s once, and haven't found terrain tuff enough to drop to 5 yet.
At the same time, they are a lot cheaper than most other tires ($185 for 33"s), which could fre up some flow for other goodies.
Just putting it out there.

16" Wheels? Man, getting mighty fancy... :D
Sounds like a great build. Any idea which NW event you will be showing it off at?

I have a great connection to get a deal on the MT's. Plus I have heard really great things about them (as a Road + Trail combo tire) Now that I am going to make this a street legal rig I will be treating it like my last one, drive it to where I want to wheel, wheel all weekend and drive it home. I think the Pit Bulls would get wiped out with that much road use :-\ . Everything I have heard about the Pit's have been great, If I decide to go with a more trail aggressive tire I will probably go with a Pit Bull.

Sorry they are 17X9's, I gotta fix that in the previous post. I am thinking it will be the Fall Classic with a continued Adventure across the NW until I run out of time and need to hit the interstate to get back for work. Nothing set in stone yet though.

A little bird told me that your kick might be ready for Powerfest........ ???
The 'May' part is the problem. I need to let work know WAY in advance if I'm going to take over a week off of work so instead of risking it not being done I'm just planning on attending my fav off road trip for the third time 8) Not to mention the cost of two trips to da NW in a month, and a cross country drive. BUT it's still not out of the realms of reality.

Guess I should have done a search on the brand of bead locks before asking the question. :D

This is going to be a VERY nice rig 8) Be sure to get us some pics up soon!
You won't be dissappointed with the MTZ's. They are great tires and I have a couple friends that wheel often who love them. They have great road manners and offer great traction offroad when needed. The ONLY time I have watched them fail was in thick, nasty, clay type mud...but honestly, I have watched a set of 38" Boggers fail in the same stuff so big deal lol. You'll love em.
-
This is all that's left of my rig (as of a few days ago) she is probably stripped bare by now :'(

sell me the old lift!
-
I call dibs on the anvil front end! Your giving this stuff away right?
:D
Have you decided what color the new rig will be, or are you going to stay with the blue?
-
All of it is for sale and will be posted to the garage sale later this week. Gotta find time to price it and get it all posted. And no Drone it's not gonna be free (will make a sweet deal for a Currie Ford 9" 5.83's and and anvil to match) 8)
Zig
-
Right now I am planning on staying with the Blue and doing a Blue and Black thing like the Black on white of my last ride.
Zig
-
not to change the subject but how much for your tires in that pic
-
All Parts will be listed in the Garage Sale section later today or tonight.

Is there any update on this build? ???
There will be an article on the build coming soon. It is almost complete and I am flying out to Oregon to pick it up form Liberty Overland Christmas 8) I cant wait. We will be doing some West Coast wheeling, followed by visiting a friend in So Cal and then a cross country drive back to Tennessee. ;D

My $0.02...
When I've been to the 'con, the yota axles seemed to hold up better to abuse than the guys on Dana 44. I've been told (but can't confirm) yotas are easier to bolt up (something to do with break lines and such?). If you can't afford ARB, I LOVE my Aussie lunchbox locker. I never notice it's there: it locks when it's supposed to, and unlocks when it's supposed to, and doesn't make clicky bangy noises.
I have to admit, I have a soft spot in my heart for IFS. Yota IFS is supposed to bolt up easy enough. The guy that did is said "It bolted up like it belonged there", but had to raise the engine block 20cm to clear: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=318480 (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=318480)
I like the trail slayer kit, but I think the front should be streatched out a bit (especially on 2-door) to help with the approach angle. I also appreciate that TT was trying to make the kit to 'bolt up' easy, and without cuttin the wheel wells, but I'd prefer to see an inch or two virtual lift, and keep the CG as low as possible.
The more the vehicle can look stock, the more impressive it'll be on the trail. Lockers & good tires go a long way towards this. I've been VERY impressed with Pitbull Tires: http://pitbulltires.com/index_02.php (http://pitbulltires.com/index_02.php). Really, they're the goods.
-
Oh - and dual cases is PERFECT for 35/37" tires. Mmmmm.... dual cases, twin sticks....
-
I also have always loved my IFS Kick. With my old set up (33's and under) I would not do it any other way. If I still had a shop to work on it, I probably would of beefed it up some more, lost some weight, kept the IFS and wet with 35's over the 37's. BUT, I did the trail slayer kit, toys and 37's.
We also did a 'Virtual Lift' with some nice body work designed by Liberty Overland. I think you will like it (I also like the looking stock thing)
I went with a more street friendly tire due to the amount of time it will spend driving to and from trail rides on the asphalt... no hauling this one to the trail 8) I think I would of slit my throat before the end of my 3100 mile drive if I would of tried it on pitbulls.
Gotta run, check out the write up when it hit's the main page and let me know what you think,

I'm ready to see your rig i love the build ups see before and after. i love it more when its my owen lol
-
I say swap in a 2.2L ecotec, that would make this the coolest rig ever. 170hp in a trail rig would be sweet.
-
I say you should put a 4.3 vortec out of a s10. that would be sweet too
-
NAH, a Zuk V-6 with a flowmaster exhaust is even better 8)....
Less than 5 days to go till I get my test drive ;D
Stay tuned to the main page for details...

I am heading out to S. Cali sometime Tuesday. I will post a pic or two for my cross country trip after I get back to Tennessee just after new years. All the detailed stuff will be shown in a write up...
Gotta get back to work so we can hit the tril this afternoon....
l8r,
Zig
PS Kevin, I will be calling Hutch later today about stopping by his place to pick up some Z-World swag and to show him da ride. If you are close to him, give him a shout tomorrow and see if/when we worked out a time. (will be New Years Eve)
-
OK ;)
-
OK, so I just completed my first 916 miles in the new ride and...... damn this thing is great!!!!!! Did great on the interstate (holding 65 most of the trip and could easily be holding 75-80 if I did not decide to go with used rims like a DA... Believe it or not the LA rush hour was fun to. Haveing a Kick on 37's that can sprint with all of the other rides onthe street is great.....
OK, going to sleep now so we can hit the 2100 miles across the country soon.

WOW that was trip. Home again after nearly 3100 miles with the last 2100 being over the past two days :o . I got in at 6 am this morning and now it's time for a nap. The truck did great on the trip and after a little break in (Oregon to San Diego) I was getting 21-22 mpg on the way across the US holding a steady 65mph.
Hopefully I will have next weekend off so I can get to the woods and do some wheeling ;D
Zig

Not bad at all for 35" tires. :)

37" :o

Glad you made it home safe without any major problems.

Made it home and got to sleep around 6 pm last night and crashed for 13 hours :sleepy: Heading back out of town for a few days for work :( my bed felt SO good :( . I'm hoping to have some time to go through pictures and post a couple while I'm gone (in a 40 hour drive, I only hit some poser shots along the way when I got off the interstate for a little while).
I cant wait until next weekend so I can play...

Have not been there before. WHen it first opened I heard rumors that it was mostly mud boggs for huge trucks and not much wheeling besides that. Since I git back form FL I have not looked into it. The pics form Woolys looks good.. and not to far 8) Thanks for the link.

LINKS! ;)
I've re-read this, and maybe I missed it, but what's the diff gearing? And is that a 2.5 or 2.7L? Is the GRP Auto 4:1 tcase a Sidekick style case, or a Samurai case behind your trans? I'm tying to get 35/37" tires under a 2-door, and just trying to get ideas...

Hey, I knew I would forget (still working 7 days a week, damn high profiled build jobs, even the media is on this one :P ) I'll try to get some up in a sec.
I'm running 5.37 gears in teh Toy axles, 2.5L GV motor and the 4:1 is an Australiam built Sidekick (Vitara for them) case gear set like the Trail Tough and Calmini gears. With the Auto, 5.37's and 4:1 it is geared just about perfect for my 37's.

It looks SO clean underneath! /drool.....
Very very nice build! Impressive.
-
Glad to hear someone's still working in this economy. Thanks for the info & pics. I may go the V6 route. Sounds better than making the 1.6L to work nice with 35/37" tires via a samurai t-case & tracker "doubler"... I'm going to be doing sand / desert stuff, so that extra power will come in handy.
-
I'm glad to have a good job with a great company even if I do have to work insane hours right now. We got a HUGE package design form the State with the condition on it that we will produce a product in 3 months(job would typically take 1-1.5 years) to get a big plant brought to Tennessee. ;) Keeping me busy and helping 4000-5000 people have a job starting this summer, it's worth it ;)
You would have plenty of power for the sand. This thing will crawl all day and run 85 down the interstate on the way home. My 8V with the 33's could run all day but was weak on the road and accelerating in high range. I have not hesitated when pulling out in traffic, passing rides on the interstate whatever. I'm planning a ride on my first weekend off up to the Badlands and will give you a sand update after that.
