Title: project : DUNE TRASH
Post by: ONE BAD TRACKER on February 07, 2008, 02:37:49 AM
Well heres how it all started i have worked for a big local wecker/tow truck company going on 4 years and last summer i had the police call me and tell me they needed me at some old ladys house in tow to impound sometruck so i jumped in my wrecker and drove over there . The police wanted me to impound this 94' convertible geo tracker because it has been sitting in her driveway for several years and it was a eye sore in the subdivision she didnt really care anyways . then i asked her when it was running last she said when she parked it it was running fine and that was a year or so ago i asked if she would sell it to me right there on the spot she said she would and to make an offer so i quickly said fifty bucks and she agreed so insted of draging this tracker of to the impound yard i took it home . Once i got it home i hooked the battery charger up and it fired right up and its been one of my silve lake sand dune toys ever since heres some pics . these pics are fome this summer the only things i have done to it are the  tires , brushgard , decals . when i got it it was bone stock and in great shape !

since these pics where taken i have decided to make some changes to the tracker right now im working it . as it sits right now on a shortened 1979 chevy k5 blazer chassis with 35' super swampers under it  alog with a built small block 350 in it . ill post som pics soon !

50 bucks, thats a real bargain. I can't believe that the cops can impound a car from someones driveway  :o. My pick up has been sat in my driveway for 18months now and thats a real eyesore.
Please post up pics as the project progresses.

Bushwacker is coming out with those for the Tracker, but they are not yet available.  Some people have modified the Sammy ones though.

I'll admit, that is a great way to pull a body off a rig.  :)

Can you use a couple C Clamps to attach the S10 Bushwhacker flares to the Tracker body?  It would be interesting to see how well it fits up.

Well i got sent back to work and that means i have MONEY to work on it again !
was out there today working on it for 12 more hours today and i got alot done , i got the frame cut and shortened 11 inches and some of the welding done before the damn welder BROKE ! when that happened that ended my night of work for sure. I guess ill be going to the welding shop to get the part to fix it tomorrow moring on my way into work . anyways heres some new pics from todays work !

Marked out and ready to cut !
(http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/4439/projecttracker102iy0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Started cuttin , no turning back now !!!!!!
(http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/9720/projecttracker106kl2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

1st side out and ready for the second !
(http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/8814/projecttracker121hn1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

on to the 2nd side !
(http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/5384/projecttracker129ot7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

pieces i cut out of the frame !
(http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/6417/projecttracker122ze2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

started welding it back together now !
(http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/725/projecttracker095wu8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

pic of me welding my dad took !
(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4430/projecttracker107ws6.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

inside of the frame before it was going to get welded but the welder BROKE !
(http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8128/projecttracker101aq0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

frame back together again and standing on its own !
(http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/2420/projecttracker093by5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

almost done welding the frame but the welder broke before i could weld the inside of the frame rails but its welded enough to stand on its own . The frame started out with a wheel base of 107 inches and i cut 11 inches out so it is now has a wheel base of 96 inches and the tracker body has a wheel base of 87 inches , so im only 9 inches off from perfect !
the trucks coming out great so far and im hopeing to have it done soon !!!! i cant wait to drive it !!!!!!!!!! gunna get some looks in it for sure its the biggest geo tracker i have ever seen !

Why didn't you just use the old one then?  It's 11.5 gallons, that should run you about 30+ minutes on the 355.   ;)

How is the angle on that drive shaft when you flex the rear?

Most of your drive train is engine.  :D

Are you going to stick with just the rear cage or do you plan on extending it forward in the future?

The rear bumper is mounted on the frame and I have mounted the " NOT so painless wiring kit " fuse block up under the dash and run the wire harness to there respective areas , but the rear was the part I worked on yesterday its all in and wired up so I got tail lights now ! Im stayin home today but Im workin on the dash panel , got autometer gauges and  mounting them on the brushed aluminum panel I cut for it , then puting it all togther back in the stock gauge cluster housing and workin on the radio besel too ! I almost forgot I got my trasfer case shifter done too I had to modify the original a little , but with the help of a shifter I got a the local salvage yard now I have a hurst transfer case shifter .

I agree that there doesn't seem to be anything "Painless" when changing wiring.  I am looking forward to seeing your dash.  These projects seem to have there own time schedule on how much can get done to them, don't they?

Well I went out to get some work done on the truck yesterday and I didn't get as much done a i would have liked. It was also my fathers 50th birthday so I talked him in to going for a ride in the 69 camaro , then he says hey lets go to the Gilmore car museum theres a big car show and swap meet there today . Given the fact that him and I dont get to hang out that much just the two of us as much I would like to , we went and had a blast and even found a few deals at the swap meet for the geo . Anyways heres the work I did get done .
I made tranny tunnel panels to cover the original holes in it from the shifters that were there . Then bent the old transfer case shifter boot to make it work in the new spot also had to modify the transfer case shifter . Now I have a hurst transfer case shifter with a four speed ball ... LOL
(http://i684.photobucket.com/albums/vv201/cruzcontrol1882/tracker/IMAG0037.jpg)
Also installed the gauge panel .

Spent friday morning working on the beast for 6 hours after work and a few more on saturday . I managed to get the rest of the gauges in on the dash and all the lights ran to them . I worked on the rollcage mounts and finished those up to now i just need to get a front bumper and plates and some insurance and it on the road ... even though its been on them without a few time now for test runs around the corner and back .

Got the truck back from my buddys shop and he got the motor and carb adjusted correctlly and now its running even better . I worked on the truck this afternoon and got the wipers all hooked up and working . After that I started replacing the steering drag links and got all buttoned up . I also put some padding on the cage around the headrests on the seats just in case . Then I started to make filler panels to cover the gap from the body to the frame around the motor .
Heres some pics !

Well I managed to get some to get some more time to work on the truck today . I made some filler panels to cover the gap between the body and the front frame rails out of some aluminum sheet metal that I got from the local scrap metal yard . I also made a template for the other hole in the drivers side where I cut it to fit the brake booster . Anyways heres some pics of todays work .

Well I had found a deal on craigslist for some 15x14 aluminum weld wheels called and told the guy I wanted them and jumped in the truck and went and got them the next day . I got them home and started to get the old wheels off and the new ones on as fast as I could . I also fixed the exaust that was pointing right at the axle tubes . Aways heres some pics .

Well I got the bumper on today after the the brush guard paint dryed and I bent a piece of 1/4 inch diamond plate aluminum to cover the frame rails and to have a place to stand when working under the hood . I also put two tow hooks on the front end as well and finished filling the holes in the fender well on the drivers side . I had a universal shifter boot laying around and I needed something rubber to cover the steering shaft hole and it fit the bill after some triming . Anyways heres the pics .

It was a late night again last night working on the truck again and today its going to get loaded on the trailer and ready for the sand dunes this weekend . I got the stock rear bumper on it last night and checked all the diff fluids and the tranfer case fluid and got them all topped off and ready to go . Jumped in it and took it for a spin only to find out that I had a bad u joint in the front drive shaft so I had to drive to the parts store to get one and then changed it . I snaped some pics last night but it was dark so ill take some more before I load it on the trailer to post up later tonite .
