I'm doing the 1.6 8v swap and when i bolted the new engine back to the tranny i ran into a problem. There is a metal gasket type thing that is in between the engine and tranny and when i went to put the 1.6 starter in the freakin gasket was not lined up. the bolt holes were off along with the opening. the gasket was lined up everywhere else except the damn starter. ??? i need to take the motor back out and either grind it down or take it out. is this gasket necessary to have? what is its purpose? Any info would be awesome. thanks!!

it is important. if you don't use it the clearance's for the clutch or torque converter and starter will not be correct. As long as you are sure that everything else is in the right place, I would not take everything back apart, I would try to open the hole while it is in the truck. A drill with a step bit could work or a dremmel tool. Those plates are supposed to be matched up with the transmission. Do you have the one which goes to the transmission or are you using the one which came with the new motor?

Are you swapping in the trackick engine AND tranny, or just the engine?
If it is just the engine, then you should be using an adapter plate between the engine and tranny, and you don't reuse the metal spacer.
If you are swapping in the engine and tranny, then make sure you have the circular dowels that fit around the engine to tranny bolts.....they make sure the spacer plate is in the correct place, for everything to line up correctly.

i'm pretty sure that the adapter plate takes place of the "metal gasket", but just to be sure i'd call the manufacture of your conversion

I am just swapping the engine out of the kick. i also have all the adapter parts and they are from Rocky Road. I will call them and ask. but you think that if i have the adapter plate(which i do) then i dont have to use that gasket?

i called RR and they had no idea. he guessed and just told me to get rid of it. they are brutal fyi. they def lost my future business.
ANYONE KNOW THE REAL ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION????

When I bought my adapter I was told to leave the plate out. It makes sense because with it you have two plates and that makes the spacing worse.

Don't use that thin spacer from the Sammy engine/tranny combo, use only the adaptor plate.
Fun times had dealing with RR also, makes you really want to support them Huh?
