Title: Roll Cage
Post by: silverado_nolan on November 14, 2007, 07:38:33 PM
I did do a search and I read some pages of a long ass thread about whether square tubing is acceptable or pipe or tubing and it goes on forever.....

I have a friend that can get a whole bunch of square tubing for me....

I have read that if you bend square tubing it becomes substantually weaker at that point so thats would be a good idea...

but what if I was to weld at all points to keep the tubes structural strength at its potential....

would that be a good roll cage? I do not have a welder my self but I do know how and hopefully could gain access to one when the time comes....

would it be good to use the stock roll bar as a base to start different points from? would it handle a roll over if done right? would square look okay?

sorry about all these questions,
Thanks a lot guys,
nolan

square tube has litle strength or a cage round tubing is cheap to buy.  don't waste your time making a sqare tube cage . besidesround looks better

Don't go with the square tubing for your cage no matter how cheap you can get it. No where near as strong as round tube and looks cheezy after you are done.

Not cheap but this is what I ended up with www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/davesport/DC001DOM.html (http://www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/davesport/DC001DOM.html). If you are on a budget check out www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/davesport/DC002DOM.html (http://www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/davesport/DC002DOM.html), it's an add on front cage for the stock roll bar.

I have the rear hoop kit that protects the rear seat area sitting in the shop if you are interested in it. I decided not too use it after I installed the cage.

Yes the stock cage is fine to build off of. According to Glenn Wakefield owner of Rocky Road Outfitters The stock bar is constructed of hardened steel.

No harder then any other tubing.. it is 1020 or 1026 DOM with an O.D equivelent to 2" and is .095 wall. Yes the stock B-hoop is exceptable to build on too as a platform. I have built over 500 cages in zuks with no issues.
