I just wired up three sets of off road lights with a max 20 amps apiece. This is fine and dandy till somebody pointed out that I could over draw my alternator if it has too small of an output. Well turns out my 90 kick 2dr has a 55 amp alternator. Anybody got a clue on a conversion or changing out the guts of the factory unit to make it put out more power?

Planning on lighting up a football stadium? Why do you need so many lights? How long of a duty cycle are you planning and how many do you need to run at once? You may be able to just put a quality battery in like an optima if you only need to run full power for 1/2 hour or so. if your talking long term you could do a GM swap. I know there are kits out there but I dont know if they are much more amps.

I run a 105 amp gm altand two optima batts

heck ya I'm going to light up a football field, if there is one thing I have learned is you can never have enough light when driving a trail at night, and dead batteries are not fun. Just would rather have too much than too little.

What is that alternator originally out of?

Trail Tough sells a lower bracket that allows swapping to a larger GM alt. I don't have the part#, but mine is a 105 amp out of an older Suburban. You'll have to modify the top bracket to fit. I believe there is also a write up here on the forum somewhere about this, try the search.

how'd ya get that to work i was just gonna get the 78 to 85 gm and pick up a rebuild kit and take it up to 130amps. but if i can get a newer alt to work. i have 2 that run 110amps from my camaro that has no motor at the moment.

also got the plug from NAPA auto . made my new bottom bracket. wired in the new plug and modified the top bracket. running all serpintine belts now. works great

wow cool i wonder if the only difference is the pulley. If so i will get one of the alternators i have from my camaro if i need to i can change the pulley. if not how hard was it to get pulleys to change over to serpantine???
