Hey gang, I'm thinking of doing another Daniel Boone trip sometime in October. This will be a fairly mild wheeling and good for stock zooks.
Here is the report from last years trip http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=12397.0
-
Sounds like fun. I need to get the Turtle fixed... minor stuff, shouldn't be too bad.
This is what I have been doing... haven't been around much... but I drove the Turtle yesterday, and got all sentimental for offroading..

I might be up for it. give me a day and I will start looking at calender
-
I'm thinking maybe Oct 20-21
-
13th or 27th would be better for me. no kids on those weekends
-
I have races on both those weekends.
-
I am racing on the 7th, 21st, and 28th.... BUT, According to how September goes, I might be willing to blow off the race on the 21st if I am not going to be in the running for year end points.
I really want to do this again, and I have a few guys that would probably want to go also.. I am POSITIVE I can get the Turtle together, it just needs some love....
-
I will have to check my calender and see what I can do, but as long as nothing comes up, I'll be there!!
hey Quaddawg.... I'm lovin the festy... That's my second favorite vehicle, right behind my tracker.. I've owned 3 festivas, did some crazy stuff with them (custom sawzaw converible ;D ) , but for you to go out there and whoop up on some high dollar vehicles, makes me grin!!
-
This date isn't set in stone, its just a target.
-
This date isn't set in stone, its just a target.
I see. Well, that date would work great for me, but no matter what you come up with, try to let us know as soon as you can so I can make arrangements... I will be doing everything in my power to make this trip... can't wait ;D

I know what youy mean. My wife will have a c-section on Oct. 25. I'd like to join this trip also but not this fall. Maybe I could do a spring trip. Is this going to be only Suzuki's? My 2 buddies both have mildly modified J**p Cherokee's and would love this also.
-
anything is welcome as long as it is reliable, i will be taking my 89 trooper in the spring.
-
Hope this Trip works out, It sounds like it would be great fun, and perfect timing.
-
You guys will have to do another one in the spring! I've already got 3 of my IL buddies ready to go. This looks like so much fun and the perfect way for us to try out the rigs we've built. My Sidekick, a 2001 Grand Cherokee, and a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo. We really want to do this but just cannot in the Fall due to my son being born. Please plan another one in the Spring and let me as soon as you think we could do it. Anytime after the first of the year should work. Maybe even a snow run, although camping would suck in the cold.
-
A snow run would be great but it would have to be a short notice trip. Snow doesn't usually last more than a few days here.
A spring run will be no problem.
-
You're right snow does not last up here in IL either. We are definitely excited about the trip. ;D You guys look like you have fun and don't get really crazy. As of right now count the 3 of us, and maybe more by then, in on the spring trip. My wife and I stayed at the Pennyrile state park in june. The state of Kentucky is absolutely gorgeous! I can't wait to see more of it offroad. Please update me if and when you get a date for Spring.
-
Has anyone settled on a date yet? I'd really like to make this one.
-
If you do another later this year or in the spring, I would love to tag along. This one is just to close to my move back to Tennessee to make it.

Are you the one that wrote the artical about the trip in the Big South Fork area?

I'll be making a trip to Big South Fork in a couple of weeks. It's a fun place
-
For the life of me I cannot find the trail that is in the archive section. I went down there and never did find it.

Yea that was me. My club back in Tennessee made annual Halloween runs there for years. It is amazing in that area with the trees turning.
Zig
-
Wouldn't happen to have a GPS track log of it would you?
-
No I dont, But I can Topo map the route and post it for ya.
Hang on a minute and I will see If I still have it.
Zig
-
That would be excelent! I would love to add this trail to the Daniel Boone route.
-
My topo software wont export what I need so itt will take me a few minutes. I will post a brief trail routw with an over all map w/ approximate lat/long at key spots.

South Loop Road form R/R run form Zenith to Oneida:
1-From Downtown Allardt (last chance for gas, food beverage) at the intersection of SR 296 and SR-52 (N36^22.832 W84^53.074) head East on SR-52 for 7-8 Miles and look for signs directing you to ‘Zenith’.
2-At approximately N36^22.405’ W84^45.708 turn Left onto Noah Buck/Sam Smith Road.
3-Travel North and East along Sam Smith Road (will turn into Mt. Helen Rd) until arriving at Zenith Road (gravel) on your left (N36^24.290 W84^43.896’) (sign points ‘To Zenith’).
*Note* you will see on the map that there is al alternate entrance/turn off shown on the map prior to arriving at Zenith Road. Range Cenetery Road will dead end into North White Oak Creek at a (use to be) challenging creek crossing. I have not been to this location in 5-6 years so I do not know it’s condition. If you take this ‘creek’ crossing take a right on the trail after crossing the creek and follow it east until it connects with the directions below at approximately N36^25.734 W84^44.435.
4-Continue to follow signs/gravel road till arriving in an open gravel/dirt staging/parking area (1-1.25 miles) N36^25.340 W 84^43.849. *Air down here*. As you pull into the staging area you will notice the road/trail crossing a small creek to your left, this is the direction you will leave the staging area.
5-Leave the staging area by crossing the small creek and follow the gravel/dirt road to the ‘Creek’ (more like a river) Crossing N36^25.734 W84^44.435
*NOTE* *WARNING* If it has been raining much in two days prior to your arrival at the crossing send the best equipped vehicle first!!!! In normal conditions, this crossing can be made by a stock Kick on highway radials (I did it) but can become deep after rains. Even at low water, stay on the apparent direct crossing between the in and out, there are deep holes just down stream form this crossing.
6-After making the crossing turn right (east) along the old R/R bed and follow it for the rest of your journey. You now have miles and miles of old R/R bed ahead of you with beautiful scenery to the end of the trip, with 1 catch ?.
7-While in Logging Hollow at approximately N36^27.323 W84^40.322 you have one more wide creek/river crossing.
*NOTE* *DO NOT FORGET THIS OR SOMEONE WILL SUBMERGE THEIR RIDE!!!!!!* At this crossing, DO NOT take the shortest line to the OUT of the trail. There are deep holes that will swallow 42’s. You need to make this crossing by driving perpendicular to the flow, bump up on the small under water rock ledge just left of the 4’ tall rock, then traverse down the far bank (around the BIG rock till coming out on the gravel).
Proper Crossing path (33’s)
Proper Crossing Path (35’s)
Just down stream of perpendicular crossing (42’s) and it got A LOT deeper about 15’ down stream
(http://www.zukiworld.com/month_020105/images/zeigler_southfork/im000075.jpg)
8-Continue along old railroad bed for approximately 1.5 miles till coming to the R/R bridge crossing. It’s old, but it’s safe! Don’t let the height get to ya :o
9-Once you cross the bridge you can air back up, unlock the hubs etc…. Its all gravel from here.
10-Stay on gravel road (if in question follow the heaviest traveled or stay right). It will turn into O&W Road and take you into Oneida, TN where you will be cursed with paved roads again.
This trail can be taken in either direction as long as it is still open to vehicular traffic. PLEASE watch for Horses and stop the entire caravan and shut off all motors and radios while they are passing. This is a trail frequented by equestrian groups and they actually don’t mind courteous 4x4 groups and we would like to keep it as friendly as possible.
There are more trails West of Zenith but we have only aimlessly roamed these areas. The trails West of Zenith and ‘Up on the hill’ (you will know what I mean when you are there) are MUCH more challenging than the Zenith to Oneida R/R run. But they are a lot of fun to explore.
Like I said previously, I have not been there in a couple of years, and it has been an ongoing battle to keep this area open for years prior to my moving to Florida. So call ahead and confirm with the Big South Fork Park Services, that the “South Loop R/R Trail is still open to vehicular traffic. I will try to call and check for you sometime later this week.
HTH,
Zig

Awesome, between the way points and the maps I think I can figure this out.
Thanks for all your help and let me know if you talk to the forest service.
I hope it doesn't rain before I try it out, my GV with 29's may not like it much. Altho I do have a new snorkel installed that I haven't tried out yet. :D
-
Hows this look?
-
Looks great!!! A GV on 29's can make this entire ride with little or know trouble. The first crossing (no pictures shown above) is a wide flat crossing that I made in the kick w/ 29's in high water, but it was scary and on the verge of floating (water to door handles), but I had a support group of larger trucks that was ready to extract me if needed.
The second crossing (shown in pics above) is hard rock bottom, much narrorer than the first crossing and the deepest part of the correct path is shwn above with the Tundra in it.
If you do this section next spring or summer let me know, I will be glad to lead throuth this section.

I'm sure well do a spring run as well.

I'm already excited.... My GF is tired of me talking about it. lol

So what is the day that you guys are planning to do this? A couple of us from Michigan might try and make it down. We are putting body lifts on today and spring spacers in a week or two so we should be on 31 inch tires by the end of sept. With this trip in OCT, we should be ready.
-
It hasn't been set yet, I'm still waiting for more people to throw out dates.
-
Well we can come on Oct 20 and 21. It is a bye week for my kids football team.
-
That week is also good for my wife and I. We'll be coming from New Jersey. It's either this trip or were going to a place in KY., in Harlan Co. Rather hook up with you guys.
-
I am pretty sure that weekend would be good for me also!
I am supposed to race that weekend, but I already have the points sewn up in that region.
-
the 20-21 is perfect for me.. Can't wait for this trip to happen ;D
-
SO, is anyone else gonna throw out some dates, or what? Really want to make this happen.
-
okay, been a while since bentparts asked about some more dates, so I'm assuming that the dates that have been thrown out there are pretty much solid? I'm just trying to see when this thing is gonna happen so I can make arrangements. :)
-
Me Too, my wife and I both have to arrange for a few days off for travel time. So how about it everyone?
-
dam this sucks, i want to go so bad. man i cant believe my wife picked such a bad time to have a baby. man if this kid comes out black or some other color i will be so pissed that i missed this trip. JK ;D
-
Still lookin for input on dates. I noticed that Zuwarrie is having their fall event the weekend of 19th, 21st Oct. We ( wife and I) are really looking forward to doing some kind of wheeling/camping trip, especially since I've finished my '63 Nimrod camper re-furb. Kentucky sure looks nicer.
-
Man, I'm gettin antsy, If I don't hear a date soon, There's no way I'll be able to make this trip :(
-
Hey Jeff, is this still going on? Haven't seen a post for awhile. You got us all excited and let us hang! Tease!
-
Sorry guys, I've been out west for the last 3 weeks.
I was told yesterday that I may have to attend an ATV jamboree that weekend, I will know for sure by the end of the week.
-
Was that for work or pleasure? It's been a few years since I've been able to take 3 weeks vaca in a row. In any case, I've been working on getting various info on different areas in KY good for wheeling. Obviously, the Daniel Boone Nat. Forest looks great, but without a guide the routes good be difficult for someone not familar with the area. I've contacted the National Forest Service in that region and am waiting for a reply in regards to purchasing Motor vehicle use maps of the forest. If I can get enough good info I'm going to do a two day ride in the area the 20th and 21st, proabably two seperate day trips. Altogether we plan on being in the area 3 to 4 days since we are leaving NJ on thurs Morn, and leaving KY on Monday Aftn. I'm also trying to find a nice camp ground to use as a base camp. If that doesn't work out to be pratical, I've found another area in KY, around the town of Evarts, in Harlan Co. The county has purchased, and /or reclaimed 4000+ acres of reclaimed coal mining land, and has marked trails of various difficulty throughout the park. I've talked to the Pres. of the local Atv club and they welcome 4wd vehicles, and the town is geared around off road tourism. The OHV park is just the begining, with another 70000 acres of trails, marked with degree of difficulty, named etc, surrounding the park, available for more off road adventure. I've had to put in for the days off, there is a small chance I could change them if necessary. If you can't make it Jeff, I'll be going to one place or the other. Anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome. BTW, the place in Harlan Co has a website, Harlan County ridge runners is the Club name.
-
We'll have a few Zuks over in Evarts KY that weekend for the Kentucky Mountain Krawlers Fall Crawl if anyone wants to join us there! We should arrive Thursday afternoon on the 18th and leave on Sunday 21st. They will be guided trailruns. Its free to ride (and camp) in the park. Definitely let us know if ya'll can make it over, Bentparts and we'll meet up!! Here's a couple of links for more info:

Hey, now that sounds good! Not sure if I'll be draggin my camper down there, looks like it so far. Do they have showers in the camping area at the park? It's about 600 miles for us, so if we leave EARLY thurs morning, we could be there LATE Thurs evening. I might have to split the drive into one long day, one short one, since the wife doesn't like driving the Tracker ( and it scares me when she does!) Look forward to meeting you LilRed, and all the other Zuk drivers too.

There are two Evarts campgrounds and I'm told they both have shower facilities. The event headquarters will be held in Verda field. I believe they have power there, but no showers. Then there's free primitive camping in the park. We will be staying at the Mt. Aire Motel in Harlan!!! Just didn't want to have to pack all the camping gear with us this time! We'll have my Sidekick and 2 or 3 Sami's with us. So, you are driving the Tracker down from NJ???
-
Yeah, drivin the Tracker down, no tow vehicle. It does fine on the highway though, very comfortable. I'm cool as long as I don't completely disable it while I'm wheeling down there. I'm going to check on the Mt Aire Motel, give 'em a call to see if they have any availability. I'd rather not have to tow my trailer down if rates are reasonable.
-
The Mt Aire Motel it is. Checked it out last night, gave 'em a call and booked for Fri, Sat and Sun. See ya there!
-
That was a work trip, lately they have been keeping me gone most of the time. I leave on Nov 3 to do a 10 day trade show in Milan.
They now have me booked to attend the Daniel Boone ATV Jaboree on the 19-21st so I'm out once again. >:(
-
Well, one of these days we'll get to do the Daniel Boone. I've ordered all the maps of the areas, and the Forest service service is sending me all the Road Use Maps of the whole Daniel Boone National Forest. We will do this someday. Thanks Jeff, look forward to meeting you sometime. Mike

Awesome! I'll PM you our cell phone number, though I'm not sure they'll work there!!! We'll find ya regardless! Now, I just got to get my new tcase gears installed, exhaust leak fixed, grill replaced and tire leak cleaned up and I'm ready to go!!!

Can't be too bad of a job if they send you to ATV jamborees! Now I can hope you'll reschedule the DB tour to when I can make it!!

Here's a link to my photos from the KYMC Fall Crawl in Harlan last weekend! http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2377756240068227977GzdmiX It was a awesome trip with great friends new & old!!
Any new dates in mind for the Danel Boone tour? Better get it on while we can as they've already shut a few trails down at Slade and graded & graveled Livingston!!!
-
I have a way around the Slade section now. Only the main trail through Livingston has been graveled, The staircase trail is still the same.
-
did this trip happen i would like to see pictures of this years trip. i'm kind of new to this stuff i have only gone on some old logging trails with my buddy and his fj40 but i would like to try this out. i'll keep a look out in the spring for another trip maybe i can meet up with you guys.

Not yet, I'm thinking a snow run would be a blast!
