Title: tranny swap vs engine swap / headgasket
Post by: subieracer on August 05, 2007, 07:47:03 PM
looking for a little advice here.. i'm looking at two trackicks,

one with a doggy tranny that wont shift into D or 2nd, but 1st and revererse are fine. 2dr auto with rough interior.

the 2nd is a 91 jlx 4dr auto with what the owner said is a blown headgasket but still drives.

the 3rd is a 91 convert 2dr with a "fouled plug" but its a bit of a drive to get. all are under $1000 so which is gonna be the better deal for me.

this is gonna be a straight trail rig so pretty aint a big deal. i'm also down with my own repairs. just looking for advice.

thanks,

-ben

I would probaly go with the four door. Head gasket is only about fourty bucks and not that hard to change with the Haynes shop manual, lap the valves in while you have the head off.
That "fouled plug" fouled for a reason, probaly bad valve or broken oil control ring, could be an easy fix or an expensive rebuild.
Auto trans would be expensive to fix in the first one most likely and probaly not easy to find one in the salvage yard.
