Hey guys, I'm new here. Googled samurai and this site came up, seems pretty knowledgable.
I have a question, maybe get some help out. My uncles Samurai speedo isnt working anymore. I am almost 99% sure it is becuase we tagged it on a rock while wheelin. Anyways, we bought a new speedo cable for it and I am going to try to replace it. I am fairly good with cars, but thought that you guys might have some better info for me.
Anything special about these speedos? Is there any connections that I should check to see if they just came undone, before I tear into it? Is the going to be hard to replace it?
(just playing with the buttons lol)

If its like my 96 tracker, its not hard to do. I had to pull the speedometer, tach, guages assembly out enough to get my hand behind the speedometer to unscrew where it goes into the back. That was the hardest part of the job!

Be careful not to drop the glass lenses. It's pretty simple. It takes about a half an hour or so. You will probably find that the end going into the transfer case snapped from being old and brittle. Someone I know, actually broke his with a drill in reverse on an 89 sidekick doing something to help satisfy his lease years ago. That was in 91. That's how brittle they are.

Ya They snap off very easliy in the T-case. Thats what happend to mine. I bought a new off of ebay, it was the cheapest i could find. It took about 15 min to put it back in.
The hardest part of putting it in is pulling the dam dash off. You could do pretty all the work without pulling the dash if that dam hazord light switch wasnt there, its prefectly positioned so that you cant pull off the trim peice to pull the gague cluster out. Then you have to unbolt one side of the dash and lift it up, and get it above the hazord light switch.
watch out when you pick up the dash that you dont pull the heater hoses out.
Oh yeah this is on an 88, you could have a differnt year with the differnt dash. If so, forget everything i said hahha

Mine was on an 87 samurai, and I didn't have to lift the dash at all. Don't know about the other years though. Maybe just chance busting the hazard off.

I am doing this work for my uncle...
So I will most likely be taking the chance of bustin something up? From what you guys have told me, I am thinking that there is alot of things that I can break if I'm not carefull.... ::)

Undo the cable from the T-case (It is one 10mm bolt). Then take the cable out of its mounts in the engine compartment. This will give you enough slack to pull the dash out and be able to work on it. I just did mine about two days ago. Took about 15 minutes and I went real slow.
You should have any real problems.
If you aren't real comfortable with the procedure just go slow. No need to rush.
