Title: VSS WTF?
Post by: Overkiller on June 21, 2006, 11:42:18 AM
I went to the boneyard and pulled a guage cluster from a fuel injected Tracker hoping to get my hands on a VSS and figure out how to adapt it to the Sami I'm building. My wiring diagram says the tracker should have a yellow lead for the VSS going to the speedometer head. I pulled the speedo out of the cluster no yellow wire, but I have pink, green, and black lead that plugs in and goes to a micro switch. There's a cam that would actuate the micro switch but I can't figure out how it's activated. I've hooked up my drill and nothing happened. My book has me looking for a magnetic sendor not a micro switch. So what gives?

I'm running an Autometer electric speedo so how do I give the ECM the signal from VSS? Can I rig up a tone ring on the tranny output and use a ABS sensor or something? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Travis

just open up the speedo and look in the back of it,you will see a small silver ring looking thing(has a magnet in it) where the speed ohmeter cable looks like it goes through it, there shouls be a small part next to it that has two screws holding it on next to the silver ring(dough nut)looking thing, it has two wires, one is ground the other is the yellow wire hook up, you do not need the cam thing just bypass it, and no you don't need to use the speedo plugs for the wires.

VSS is a reed switch, operated by a rotating magnet. You can check the operation of the switch by using an ohmeter while slowly turning the cable. Theoretically you could rig up something on the tranny, years ago you could buy vehicle computers that had speed sensors that consisted of a reed switch and a magnet, the magnet was usually fixed to the driveshaft somewhere. On the Trac/Kick AFAIK you need to generate 4 pulses for each turn of the shaft, so you could use a reed switch with 4 magnets fixed to the tranny output.
