Just wondering what tire pressure everyone is running. I know the stock tire pressure is supposed to be 26PSI all around, but what about aftermarket tires? Different sizes?
-
I, Personelly, Run 25lbs front and rear for D.D.
Thats on 2dr and 4dr with 32"s
-
Yeah, I'm aired down to 26psi, I checked what it was because the ride seemes really rough with my new tires and the tire shop had it up to 38psi on my 10 ply 245/75/16's.
-
I run 36psi, need to get a compressor so I can air down off road.
36psi is what the tyre place recommended, it is also what was recommended when I did a driving course (emergency braking etc for on road). My understanding is that the tyres will contact the ground better and clear water better, the added bonus of better fuel economy is handy too. I'm just running standard sized Bridgestone Dueller A/T D694. Once off road I've heard people recommending pressures down to 10psi but it all depends on what you are driving on and what tyres you have, I don't think I'd go that low without bead lockers.
-
I run around 45 psi. Mine are retreads, and high pressures are recommended to avoud overheating the tire (with the risk of losing the new tread). The extra soft rubber makes it not too stiff...
-
I'm down around 20-22psi on the 31's on the Tracker. Think I need to go lower.
The GV has 25psi per tire and I could probably stand to go lower as well.
The Ranger has 30psi and I think I'm happy where they are. Rangers are kinda porky for "midsize pickups". :P
-
i run 235/60-16 (26psi) on my GV, those tyres are not good on road at all!
but the roads here in Norway is really bad, feels like driwing a BOAT downstreems >:(
can it help to use more pressure?
my winter tyres are 195/75-16, mutch better on road but gooks like goofy's car (too slim tyres)
got new tyres for next season 225/65-16 cooper power king plus, hope they are not too bad on-road.
-
If the 235/60/16 aren't good you should maybe go for 235/70/16's. Since theese will have a taller sidewall they will ride smoother on and off the road, but I would still use only 26lbs of pressure in them.
-
I am running stock size as far as I know that are toyo 800 ultras.. they are stupid tires but are lasting well. I just run the max 45 in them. since for now I primarily only usie it on pavement and a few gravel and dirt roads. They seem to be working fine like that. I think I'll start running at about 40 psi since the center of my tread is wearing a bit faster than the rest
-
I run 237/70/16 Dayton Timberline A/T at 35 psi. I've been thinking of upping to 40, as I spend way too much time on road and could use the extra mileage.

Yes, if you run higher tire pressures you may get a little better gas mileage, but you will likely get uneven wear and the tires will not last as long.
Here is an article on tire pressures, it concentrates on off road pressure but does some analysis of street pressures too.

I've seen other people do calculations on what PSI is required to safely carry a load but couldn't remember what that is. Is it really as simple as
MAX PSI / MAX Load = X PSI / Actual Load
It makes sense, but I thought I remembered more calculations being done than that.

i spoke to a fellow 99 GV 2,0TD driver today, the same car as mine. he uses 235/70-16.
he's car didn't like the bigger tyres,
with 235/60-16 he drove it on 0,6-0,7Litres on 10KM's.
with 235/70-16 it needs 0,8-0,9Litres on 10KM's.
i'm not sure i like the bad diesel mile age >:(
any input????
-
beerman, your friends car must be the 8v 5 door. Mine is the 16v 3 door. I use 235/70-16 reteads. Mileage has soared really high. Without taking into account the wrong odometer, I think it's above 10l/100km now. I haven't checked,I am too scared! :-[
Besides, your friends car should have 4.3 diff ratio, mine is 3.9! :-X
-
we both hawe 99's, 87hp Mazda 8v engines.
i've chiptuned mine +K&N air filter, it actually helped on diesel mileage.
guess i got 110+ hp now, i learned that chiptuning lets me drive hard vith good diesel mileage :D
-
Right, I've got the Peugeot engine, I was actually referring to the 8v Peugeot engine in my other post but later thouht about the Mazda engines...
Mine comes stock with announced 110hp, but it comes out at a measuered 116hp. I supponse mine is a couple of hp higher with the Green air filter. A friend has chiptuned his to 140 hp, now that is nice! ;D
But as I said, my current mileage is terrible. I need a regear soon! :-X What gear ratio do you have?
-
i have no idea about the gear ratio, but it's a 5door.
hawent measured my hp, but i hope it's more than the stock 87hp ;D

(taken from my cardomain page)
I think 32 psi is good for my tires. Recommended (for stock) 23 psi was too soft. Went to 30 psi which was ok. 44psi was way too hard. Dropping it to 36 psi helped a bit. But I think I'll keep it at 32 psi for the time being. The ride is good, pretty solid, and it doesnt feel too much like a covered wagon.

thank you, i will try that on my way to work.
i clicked your link as a return favor ;)
-
cool
8)
-
filled 36 psi in my tyres today, think i will keep them at that pressure for a while.
-
when I had my stock alloys on, I ran them high for best mileage possible
at least 40psi I think
(it ran well)
-
i might trye to go higher later.
when you whent that high, did they wear much on the middle?
-
I believe the wear was pretty even
(but then again, I almost never go offroad)
-
ok, i drive mainly on-road. so that sounds good 8)
-
On road is where you'll see the wear quicker. Offroad you could run tires over inflated for years and it would be less noticeable. Pavement is more abrasive than most offroading surfaces.
-
i've seen the face of a mc driver that surfed the pavement on he's face, it weared qick ;)
my tyres seem to be worn mostly on the sides, when i bought the car i had to put on the winter tyres right away.
so i hawen't used the 235/60-16's a lot, still the 195/75's is better to ride on.
-but look's lame >:(
-
Was each tire worn on the sides? If so it sounds like they genuinely need more air pressure.
We put 225/75R16 mud terrains on my wife's GV and it looks MUCH better. We lost a bit of gas mileage but eh, it rides and drives better than it did with those squishy 235/60R16 car tires.
-
2 of the tyres are worn at the sides, they are newer than those that are evenly worn.
but i didn't think of it when i got it, just filled the 26 psi
had to put on snow tyres anyway.
-
I just thought I'd do a quick web search to see if I could find pictures of tyre wear and a diagnosis of the problems, I found some info at these sites:
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
http://www.goodyear.co.za/tire_school/problems.html
The "tyre bible" has heaps of other info which is interesting but you'll need to scroll down a long way to see the stuff on tyre wear. I also found some photos at tyremaster.com.au or something like that but I'm sure some of the over/under inflation lables were wrong.
