Title: Cut off my rockers, installed Rails THANKS HOBGOBLIN!!
Post by: Quaddawg on February 18, 2006, 04:51:48 PM
Hobgoblin made me an INCREDIBLY NICE set of Rock Rails, He designed them, and I sent him some measurements for my application, as I wanted to remove part of my existing rockers, and install a set of custom rails, no lower (actually a little higher) than the stock rockers..

By now, you guys know I am against body lifts.. but I didn't want to hang sliders down below the rockers and lose anything.. so I decided to cut the rockers out AND install rails..

Better pictures later, it is dark and friggin COLD out today.. bout 13 at the moment.. I had to lie in the driveway and cut out the rockers...  (I just have the one side done at the moment)

ANYWAY, the main body of the rail is made of 2" square tubing, with 2" tubing going back to the frame, and 1/4" plate steel fabbed into "saddles" so it securely wraps the frame..

I can highlift off'em  no prob.. I could hang the Tracker by them if I needed to... LOL..

They fit in great with my overall look, I think..    Once again,  better pics tomorrow..

but from the side picture, you can see the driver side, where most of the rocker was rusy anyway, so I just took some light sheet metal, and riveted it into the door jam, and wrapped it back under and riveted in place.. this gives the original wiring harness a nice secure "conduit" to run in.. no worries..

THANKS HOBGOBLIN!!!     You rock!

So...  how did you mount them to the frame?  Weld?   Clamps?

For me, that's always the big problem...

This is a picture of Shrockworks mount.. I don't have a picture of Hobgoblins.. but, it looks very very similar..  it is a saddle of 1/4" plate steel, with the bolts at the top...

so far, it seems to be bullet proof!

I wheeled it today, and bounced it off a couple rocks... didn't budge... (only have the left side on... lol.. need to move some brake lines for the right side, should have it tomorrow..)

Thanks for the pic, Quaddog.

I have seen that style of mount before.

Does the back side of the clamp fit into slots cut in the bottom of the L-shaped bracket??

Hello,

The mount is all one piece, with two 3/8 inch bolts at the top which clamp it to the frame. The saddles fit very tight. They will stay up with no bolts in them.If anyone is interested I could make a few more.

Finally got around to doing the passenger side, and getting a picture of Hobgoblin's mount.

Here you go..

Before I cut the rocker and folded it up, and after installing the rail.. plus the mount.

Thanks again Hobgoblin..

He has said he would make a few sets if anyone else is interested..

That's an awesome mounting style.  I like that there was no drilling or welding onto the frame, and also no body lift.  Working on a Nissan's bodylift, and realizing how horrible they are, right now.

 ;)

Now you're talking!

If you take care measuring, I think any rock rail designed for a 2" body lift would mount like this, just fold the appropriate amount of sheet metal under..

You can then drill and rivet, weld, or fiberglass them up..   done carefully, this would look factory.  Mine is just a trail rig.. so when something doesn't "fold" quite right.. .I beat the #*&^ out if it with a BFH..  LOL...  still looks pretty good, even brute force ghetto style... :D

Remember, your rocker will be MUCH weaker after this, unless you welded some plate to it first.. but I didn't see the need, and it is holding up just fine... no real need for a LOT of strength right here, as long as the rock rails are on it...

Thanks Hobgoblin!  I think I will use this method of mounting the sliders I am working on.  Looks great!

I have to make one more post on these sliders..

I slid into the passenger side bar Saturday, as Haspin..  I was doing a pretty nasty climb, a little off camber.. and it was slick.. I slid pretty hard into the right side..   I bounced off the tree, into my rear tire.. and the tire just pulled me right around the tree.. then on up the hill.

I highly recommend having your tires outside your fenders, and rock rails if you want to keep your damage to a minimum off road..

The tires and rails keep pretty much everything off the fenders and doors (unless the obstacle is overhanging....)

NOW, where can I find folding mirrors?  I can tell my mirrors aren't long for this world.. lol...

It was pretty cool.. if I had done the same thing BEFORE the rock rail.. I could have definately caved in the rocker, door, and maybe even the glass.. not to mention, probably being stuck on the tree on the hill..

All it did was scrape a little paint off the rail... not even a tiny little bend.. and NO damage to my body.. YEAH!

Lol, sounds like quite the experience.  I like the sheetmetal idea; bend and beat to poopy.

Do you know what type of steel those are?  I'd love to get a set on my Toyota, and they look pretty simple.  I think if I do, I'll use the bend and beat method to tuck em up.
