Anyone ever get their kicks tranny rebuilt???
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:33:36 AM »
Just curious, because i'm just getting really discouraged with my Track/Kick lately.  Everytime i fix something another thing goes wrong.  Right now it needs a new or rebuilt tranny (5-speed).  The bearings are so worn i can hear them sheering metal-to-metal as i drive...especially in 5th gear.  sometimes i can't even get it into gear, 4th gear jumps out, and sometimes when put it in gear....even with the clutch pedal down all the way it wants to go.

Simply put the tranny is shot.

I was looking a few used trannies but many people say just get mine rebuilt because the used one could have the same problems.  At least with a rebuilt one i know it's going to last.  So i have at least decided to go that route...but i'm curious if anyone else has done it?  what did the repair bleed you for?  I'm guessing this will easily be a well over $1000 job.  But i may be way off, but if someone has already done it maybe i could get a better idea of what i'll get dinged for.

Also right now i hae a huge leak some where that fills my drivers side foot well with an inch or more of water everytime it rains.  I can't figure out where it's coming from.  I have a new top, and the fire wall is bone dry.  This is driving me nuts...and i'm sure rusting out my car as well.

Wow.  What the heck did you DO to your tranny to wear it out?  I've got 204,500 miles on my DD (95 4-door), and the synchro's are a LITTLE bit iffy, but it's still working like a champ.  My trail rig (95 2-door, only has 136,000 miles) needs a new shifter sheet, but it was bad when I got it, back in 2002.

Anyway, a rebuild kit is only around $100, if I recall correctly.

You know what.  I'm not sure what happened  ???
Just one day my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears started to make a loud (supercharger like) whine.  But 4th and 5th were fine.  It ran and shifted great still. I drove it like that for over a year fine. Just about a month ago the gears got louder.  And randomly i'm not able to get it into ANY gear.  4th stil runs quiet and fine...but it pops out of that gear...so i have to keep my hand on it to make it stay.

And just recently 5th gear became the worst gear.  I hear loud shearing grinding noises like it's metal-to-metal.  I'm curious if my transfer case being blown out may have had a hand in this.  the transfer case fried like 8 months after i bought it.  It did nothing but grind and pop out of 4wd.  When i drained the gear oil from the transfer case it was nothing but thick metalic flaked goo.  That was 2004, I never had it fixed because at the time i lived in California and i didn't need the 4wd as much if at all.  Besides the truck ran fine.

My transmission is going to need to be rebuilt before to long as well, and I only have 136,000 on the clock.  But 1st, 3rd, and 5th and pretty noisy compared to 2nd and 4th, I'm waiting until they get a bit louder before tearing it apart.  Or when the clutch finally gives out, whichever happens first.  :)

Rebuild kits with the bearings, synchros and seals are right around $160.......that was a year or so ago when I rebuilt mine.  I've discussed rebuilding the tranny before on here......so if you want some more info, just search for my previous posts.

You can almost alway count on adding a new input shaft to that trany rebuild.  All that I have seen (about 5) the pilot bearing wears the nose down.

I just had my 5-speed rebuilt with a kit I bought from Sean at Lowrange,,also put in a new clutch and cable, but I live in Costa Rica so the price I paid for labour would be no where near the same, but its like new again and I'm happy. Mostly I write this pos because I have the same mystery water problem, except mine is on the passenger side. And its only when its parked and rains lots. If I drive through heavy rain the interior stays dry,,,,,weird. ???

No kidding Rod?
That's exactly my problem.  If i drive through rain no problem, but if i park it's Lake Suzuki in there.  The firewall is dry, the door panel is dry,  Around the door seals close tight.  I can't figure this one out.

Sure thing Rodzilla.  As soon as the rain here let's up i'm taking a hose and doing some research.  I hope it's not the top somehow.  We have the same exact tops.  Hmmmm. come to think of it there could be a very small chance the top has sepage?

It could explain how everything is dry but that one spot?????  I'll check this in the morning.
