??where is my oil going??
« on: February 18, 2006, 04:45:42 PM »
My last oil change was at 164,000km and I changed it to a 5w30 full synthetic oil, for the winter and also because i started to notice that my oil was evaporating rather fast. So... she's got 170,000km now, and i thought it might be a good idea to check my oil level....  :o and there was nothing there but only a small drip on the end :o ..... after saying WTF a couple of times and scraching my head :-\.... I started to look around for any leaks, but i couldn't find any, then I pulled my sparks, and they looked clean too!! Its a 1.6 8v. Oh and no, there isnt any smoke coming out back.    ??? So what gives ???

An evil troll is sneaking underneath your Sunner at night and stealing your oil?  ???

In other words I have no reasonable idea.

Check the water..My dad had an S-10 2.8  that somehow sucked oil in the rad.But it never put water in the oil.He drove it 3 years like that,He even had new gaskets..Sold it and the guy still drives it today. An that's been over two years...Other than that I agree with the above quote.

er...... you drove it 6000km without checking your oil?   I check my oil at least once a week..

Also, I have had engines that would eat synthetic oil rather quicky... never quite THAT quickly, but I had one that would need a quart every 3000 miles..  perfect condition, never smoked a lick, and it wouldn't do it with conventional oil.. go figure...

Change the oil, check it more frequently... and see what pattern results.

Just had an almost disaster like this myself.....

had trogdor in the shop twice in the last 6 months, everything looked fine......wasnt due for an oil change, but knew i had a small leak around the valve cover gasket so i was keeping an eye on it.......

then one day i notice some valve tapping noise all of a sudden.

CHeck the oil and it barely shows on the dipstick.

Turns out my oil pan gasket had a sudden huge leak, mechanic said the inside of the valve cover looked well lubed, so im hoping there is no damage.

After dropping the money on the new suspension i cant afford a replacement motor right now...... got lucky i guess, only noticed the clicking cause i stopped next to a building and got the echo.......

Make sure your not pulling the stick out
and looking without wiping it and poking
it back in. Oil will form a drop on the end
of the stick, so you might think it's only
1 quart low, when in fact it's 2 or 3 or  :o
low and you toast an engine

I discovered that with my old 1.3. Just in time.

even with synthetic oil your supose to change your oil at the same intervals as conventional oil, every 5000km. also check it every gas refill too.

because the oil is a lot mor slippery, your oil and piston rings cant wipe it off completely off the cylinder walls.  just means your engine's not at it's peak any more, but you should still have quite a few more miles to go.  some oil simply stays on the cylinder walls and gets burned up.   you wont see any smoke, were talking minute particles.

Always worth a shot at checking the pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) check valve located in the valve cover.  Easy to check, cheap to change.  I start thinkning of changing my oil at 2000 miles (~3000km).  I almost never exceed 3000 miles.  Now that semi-synthetic has gotten so cheap with the rise in conventional crude oil, I have started to use it.  Regardless, at 149000 miles, it uses oil.  I have to check it between oil changes now.

Enjoy! ;D
