I've always heard at least 6000#, preferably an 8000#. When I order mine soon, it'll be an 8000# Warn or Ramsey, whichever I get the best deal on.

Well mine is an 8000lb Ramsey.  It may be a little overkill but it makes me feel good to pull out fullsize rigs   ;)  I think the general rule of thumb is a pull strenth of 1.5 times the gvw of your vehicle.

Don't forget the high output alternator and the dual batteries to supply the cheaper electric winch.  Or go with a hydrolic winch and reap the rewards.

get a mil-marker electric winch by far the cheepest winch on the market right now and with there reputation it has to be good. i had a 4500 lds winch an my tracker and never had a problem ur tracker only ways at most 2800 lds. that is after lift and tires. if u wheel with bigger rigs u may want to consider a bigger winch for thier benifit. save money and spend on some x-line and scrap the cable. x-line does not stretch like cable so if it breaks it just falls to the ground. and will reduce ur wieght by 40 lbs.

i ment save money on the winch bcause x-line is expensive but if it saves ur life u can't put a price on that.

Rule of thumb that I've heard is 2.5x your vehicle weight minimum.  I'm running a Mile Marker 9000 lb electric winch on the front of my Sammy.  4wheelparts.com has weekend sales where they sell that winch, a tow strap, 2 tow hooks, a cheapo watch and a video for $499.00 with no shipping.  Just check in every Saturday or so on their website, or sign up for their web sale alerts.

I run a Warn m6000 with synthetic rope. Ive never stopped it pulling myself out of anything. Its fast and it has been very reliable for many a pull for several years.
