From what I've found, winch bumpers cost as much as the winches and they're heavy.  I'm looking for a low cost, light weight winch solution and yes I have a come a long. :P

The two Samurias I usually run with both have a real minimal bumper that is basically a platform for the winch and thats it.

Zoom in on the link and take a look.

I think a little overkill is good when it comes to a winch, to much is just a waste though.  You could get a receiver mount for your winch and put receivers on the front and back of your rig and then you could store it out of the weather, use it from the front or back and not need to spend big dollars for a winch bumper. A fabricator could make up the receivers and mount them for a lot less than the five bills or more you could spend on the bumper.

I hope I am not the only one that depends on a come-along and stock towhooks,  extremely low cost solution, 35$

Is 8000 lbs about right or can I get away with 6000 lbs or less?  Also has anyone kept their stock bumper and added a winch?

There were people posting on here a while back about winches.  Someone on here was running a 5 or 6000Lb winch.  They said it would pull the out just fine, but personaly i would go with an 8000 Lb.  You might as well have a more...for those extra sticky situations  ;D

As fun running a winch with the stock bumper, i think you could make a winch mount that sits over the stock bumper.  But why on earth would you want to keep the stock bumper?
Its like 16 gauge sheet metal hahah

I wouldn't go for less than 8000lbs on a Track/Kick. There isn't really any need for a winch bumper as such. Some of the designs for newer trucks have the winch set into the bumper. You just need a very strong and well mounted tray to fit the winch to. Maybe you could cut out a section of the front bumper.

I can't find an aftermarket example right now but the Dune concept vehicle doesn't have a conventional winch bumper

I was at costco today and for $400 canadian you could buy a 9500 lb winch in a tray with handles that slides into a 2" receiver with the rollers, wires, accessories, everything you need.  Is this too big?  They also had a 2500 lb version for smaller receivers for 77 bucks.  Yes I know it is made for ATV's but if I used a pulley would this be sufficient?  Honestly I probably wouldn't use a winch very often, I just want some piece of mind when I'm wheeling.

OK, why would I need an 8000 lb or so winch for a 2000 lb truck?  How do they rate these things?
